Albums and Songs of 2012

I remember discussions on the forum about 10 years ago about how people were starting to feel that their personal tastes were less and less aligned with critics. Scrolling through the lists here, it looks like there will still be quite a bit of overlap between our final results and what the critics thought the best albums and songs were from 2012, but the overlap seems less pronounced than in prior decades.

Luckily, of course, with so much music at our fingertips we can go beyond critics’ recommendations to delve deeply into genres that we like. I’ve been listening to songs in these lists that I’m not familiar with (I guess there will be more and more songs every year that I’m not familiar with as people’s individual lists share less and less similarities with the critics’ consensus lists) and what struck me is that each list kind of tells a narrative about the list-maker’s taste in music. With less reliance on critics for recommendations, and with more opportunity to search for releases in a genre that you love, it makes sense that our lists would say something about us.

This point about how the art we engage with becomes a part of our identity is something that resonated with me in a scene from a French film that I watched yesterday called Un beau matin [One Fine Morning]. In the scene, the main character talks to her daughter about the books that her father owns and how it reflects a part of his identity. The young daughter questions this by pointing out that her grandfather didn’t write the books himself, but the mother’s response is that he chose the books, and that each book represents a touch of colour which makes up the portrait of her grandfather.

So I guess what I’m ultimately trying to say is that I’ve enjoyed exploring people’s lists in this thread and the narrative (or lack of narrative

) it constructs about the list-maker. I’ve discovered many songs that I like. Even though only one or two of them will be added to my own list (last month, “Los chicos hoy saltarán a la pista” by La Casa Azul on Honorio’s list won me over with its upbeat, summery pop sound, and this month I was moved by Bill Fay’s understated piano loops and his simple sense of awe at being part of life on “Never Ending Happening”, which I discovered through DaveC’s list) there were many more that would be included if I had a longer list. So thanks for the diverse palette of colours in these songs.

My favourite Spanish song of 2012: John Talabot's "Oro y sangre"

"Oro y sangre." "Gold and Blood." Yellow and red. The colours of the Spanish flag (but also of the Catalan flag). This song was the closer of the compilation I talked about two months ago (“From a Country in Flames: 50 years of Spanish Pop”). Without thinking too much I slipped the song there, an instrumental track by an internationally acclaimed Spanish act that alluded in the title (intentionally or not) to the colours of the Spanish flag but with a sound that nobody beforehand could identify with a typically Spanish sound (even if it is usually labelled as "balearic beats"). It could illustrate the long (and winding) road from the first song on the compilation, with Raimon making a protest song about the fear, blood and hunger of the Spanish society of the early 1960s, to the modern and cosmopolitan electronic sounds of the early 2010s, with a country integrated into Europe and the Western world and no longer culturally alienated.
What I did not suspect then (early 2013) is that the events that were going to happen in the next 5 years would so drastically change the perspective of naively talking about the colours of the Spanish flag. Talking about this issue right now is like "painting oneself into a corner" (the Spanish idiom would translate literally as "getting oneself into a garden"). When in 2011 the terrorist group from the Basque Country ETA announced the end of its activities, it seemed that a new era of peaceful coexistence without nationalist confrontations might be possible in Spain. But then the focus of conflict shifted from the Basque Country to Catalonia, with increasing activity by separatist Catalan nationalism that ended with an illegal referendum and a unilateral declaration of independence in 2017, rendered ineffective mainly by the lack of international support. The reaction of the rest of Spain was a kind of outbreak of Spanish unionist nationalism (I have never seen so many Spanish flags in my city as in 2017) that finally led to the resurgence of the far right. Nowadays if you see someone with a bracelet with the colours of the Spanish flag they are probably a s sympathiser of Vox, the far-right party, in favour of abolishing the current division of Spain into autonomic communities. And this structure (autonomic communities), intermediate between federalism (like the states in the USA) and regionalism, should have been the best option, at least in my opinion. But that's enough, I've entered into this "garden" much deeper than I wanted to.
Especially because probably when John Talabot titled the fourth song on his album "ƒIN" ("End," 2012) "Oro y sangre" these kinds of questions were the furthest from his mind. Maybe he didn't mean to allude to the colours of the Spanish flag at all but, let's say, to violence related to money (gold and blood, you know). John Talabot is the stage name of Oriol Riverola, a DJ and musician born and based in Barcelona. He took his stage name from the name of the school he attended as a child in Barcelona, a trilingual (English-Catalan-Spanish) school. He achieved quite a lot of recognition in the early stages of his career, after only a handful of EPs/12"s he earned 5 stars from The Guardian and a Best New Music mention from Pitchfork with "ƒIN," his very first album, filed under the nu-house genre. But it seems that the initial success, and the high expectations that usually come with it, are putting some pressure on Riverola/Talabot, as ten years later there is no official follow-up to "ƒIN," apart from some scattered collaborative works.
But there is no sign of pressure or exhaustion on "Oro y sangre," a track that marries luminous electronic melodies with airy dance beats. Handclaps, samples of screams, danceable sequences, synth melodies alternating between bouncing and dreamy and a clever use of dynamics are some of the song's assets. A brilliant exit door for 50 years of Pop "from a country in flames."

Apologies for the long song list, there was so many compilations I have this year that they ended craming up the list just like with 2011. Luckily the compilations decreases at the start of 2013, so the song list will shorten as the year goes.

2012 took me by surprise, I was expecting to enjoy the music much less than the songs in 2011 but I ended up warming up to many of them very quickly and find that 2012 is equal to 2011, just the albums from 2012 were stronger. Between commercial music, house music and the critically acclaimed - commercial music has won in a big way for me in 2012 whilst house music won in 2010 and 2011.

I've made some note for afterwards because 2012 did leave me a little shock especially the one between two albums. But for starters, there's a sweet little song sitting in my #125 slot that might everyone feel old with the internet - enter with care!

1. The highly scored albums were slow burners and turned out great, the not so well scored albums turned out to be easier to get into. The slowest burner for me was "Shields" and easiest was "Glassheart". "Channel Orange" and "Visions" I've only managed to warm up to this month after 5 and 4 years of trying to get into them. I don't really follow Aerosmith's music and they were the second to last album I put on and when I did, my goodness! After some very heavy electronic produced albums from this year, it was refreshing to hear those lively instruments with some high spirit with the vocals rather than the safer ones.

2. The biggest shock for me comes from Glassheart making The Idler Wheel sweat off the top spot. Yes, a 89/100 tapped out against a 60/100 in my list! I was very certain that The Idler was a strong favourite or second album of the 2010s decade in between Freemason's "Shakedown 3" album but after popping on Glassheart, I begin to notice that majority of songs from that album have dominated my list before the second favourite song from Idler Wheel, "Jonathan" could appear and pop on the album again to check if that's how I feel about the songs from Glassheart. I played both albums to Pepperami to see which one she preferred, she prefers The Idler Wheel's strong songwriting over Glassheart but agreed that it's Leona's best album. Glassheart is no groundbreaker but it was a fine singalongable pop album with radio friendly balladry hooks, The earworms from this album worked so well for me, I felt like I was listening to a greatest hits album rather than a studio album, like Body Talk and E-Mo-Tion. This album sees where you could put the name Leona Lewis in the same sentence to Drum 'n' Bass (Come Alive) and Grimehouse (Glassheart), it also doesn't hurt that Leona has wonderful soaring voice. I think Fireflies is as close to Art Pop Leona has ever gotten, it's has that shivering sunlight burst that Perfume Genius' song Slip Away had, it's got a Massive Attack influenced beat that Siohan O'Donaughy's Don't Give It Up possesses and that tender melancholic strings that Dido tends to use, like Northern Skies. If ProjectTermina is reading this, another album I recommend.

3. The Spirit Indestructible - this album works better as an urban stoner album experience or to stone dance that body in the goofiest way with a grin on your face due to the heavy R&B bass, MIA inspired world beats and Nelly riding the rhythm with her goofy chipmunk deliveries. All through the tracklist from Track 1 - 8 especially "Parking Lot" and this deluxe track, "Don't Leave Me" a reggae inspired song cause Bob Marley knows where its at! "The Most Beautiful Thing" and "Waiting For The Night" can trick you into thinking you're in a Eastern Asia Festival.

4. Surprisingly, "Inspector Norse" did not make my top 20 as I thought it would but I had no problem being penetrated into deep meditation from "528Hz" and the chorus from "Oh Yeah" and mad stomping to the trashy build up and drop from "L' Amour" on blast. I think the sound of "Closer" by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaur could please a Radiohead, Disclosure and Burial fan and those who loves "Clarity" by Zedd, "Eyes" by Kaskade is for you.

Oh and Rumpdoll, unfortunately Kofelgeschroa did not manage to make it past my #32 slot with "Sog Ned" and "Wann I" sitting somewhere outside my Top 300. To put it in Hip Hop fashion, blame Leona and Fiona. If thats not enough, Nelly and Ellie.

Lovely to see the Ondatrópica album still doing so well on the forum with that #12 placement. Hopefully it's one of many unacclaimed albums not performed in English that will catch on with critics in the future.
