The Rifles – She’s Got Standards: 7
Gets just about a seven from me, as the energy can't be denied, besides being fairly standard indie stuff.

Panam’s Latin roots have slowly vanished from his Biggest Fan entries. Instead, we get this piece of exotica, a Hawaiian cover of a Haitian song.

Year: 1961

Almost ridiculously calm and tranquil, a bit like music they play for babies. Except this sounds like actual music and it works quite well.

Alessi Brothers – All for a Reason: 5
Sure, there is a pretty melody there, but the delivery is, like so many yacht rock ballads of the time, so dull. Artists like this hardly ever sell me their emotions.

Bon Jovi – Have a Nice Day: 4
I remember hearing this quite a lot when it came out; Bon Jovi was and as far as I know still is very popular where I grew up. Even then, when my appreciation of Bon Jovi was a lot higher, I thought this was a retreat to earlier better songs. Back then I disliked the chorus, now I find it unintentionally funny how the music stops so Bon Jovi can shout the title as if he has thought of the world's greatest put-down.

Today a band that is as intensely loved and hated as Bon Jovi, but by complete the opposite crowds. Nicolas is clearly with the Beefheart crowd.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band – Observatory Crest: 7
I wouldn't go as far as to call it a masterpiece or one of Beefheart's best, but after I mentioned my dislike for Alessi's yacht style ballad yesterday, this is a good example of how to do a good romantic ballad. It's a rather straightforward song for the Captain, at least in style, because I hardly know what it means.

Fasbjd’s song today has a worrying title. Every time in a movie when somebody claims they don’t need medical attention that means they actually do. It rarely ends well for such characters, do fasbjd: go to a doctor.
And for the record, yes, this long live take is the original and the go-to version. It’s even bubblin’ under at AM.

Humble Pie – I Don’t Need No Doctor: 7
The Fillmore setting along with the guitar solos that push the length of the song might make you expect something like the Allman Brothers, but there is little blues in this rock, despite being a Ray Charles cover. This is full-blown hard rock and everything about the performance makes me think more of something like Van Halen, even if this came quite a bit earlier. It might have seemed a bit of an unusual performance at the time, although nowadays I can't help but feeling it is a little cheesy. Yet it is fun too.

I didn't look up a translation of the lyrics of this one, but didn't have to, as it is a very appealing and lively song as is.

We stay in France today, but into new age, with a band that fittingly for the genre is named Era. It’s a change of pace from candyman’s usual disco/ pop style.

Stevejazz’ list does sometimes highlight songs that were a hit a long time ago, but are somewhat forgotten. For him, today’s pick is rather recent, despite being more than 50 years old. My mother remembers it and critics just enough to make it bubblin’ under (although like last time half of those critics are stevejazz). How about you?
