Groove Theory – Tell Me: 5
I don't recognize this from the nineties, but I'm not sure if that is because I never heard it before or if it just isn't memorable.

Brace yourselves, as Holden is bringing the love today. It is the second appearance by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and their song is bubblin’ under on AM.

Definitely a song (the first one from the crop stolen for biggest fan from my list) that probably wouldn’t be on my list if I made it today, far from peak Nick Cave.

Just wondering. Why was it on your lost back then? Or was it actually peak Nick Cave in your estimation when you made that list?
Did your appreciation of the song change or have you discovered more music, specifically NC&TBS?

I think a combination of changing tastes and discovering music. For one, there's definitely at least a hundred plus songs that I could add to the list since 2021, pushing out this among many other songs. I also think my tastes have changed quite a lot. Of course this song is far from bad, I'd even go so far as to call it very good, but I just don't find as much enjoyment out of it as I used to.

I guess it is time for a hit. Bonnielaurel’s newest pick actually has over a billion plays on Spotify and was one of the biggest hits of it’s year! I’m clearly out of touch, because both title and artist don’t ring a bell with me. Have I been missing out?

412. Ava Max – Sweet but Psycho
Year: 2018
Album: Heaven & Hell

It may be a little too reverent to Lady Gaga, but I also have to admit that this is quite catchy. And it does sound vaguely familiar, so I probably heard it somewhere before.

Not many artists would be advised to cover one of Stevie Wonder’s best songs, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers had a go at it early in their career. Whuntva likes it and even some critics showed respect, as the song ranks on AM at #9906.

Can it hold a candle to Stevie's version ? Surely not but it's a cool showcase for Flea and Frusciante (though Kiedis shows his limits as a singer)

10

From listening to their What Hits!? compilation, this seemed like the one time the band justified its existence in the '80s.

Not a big RHCP fan, but I stand by my intro to them (via IRS' "Cutting Edge" - anyone else remember that?):

And now all of a sudden a requiem! As per usual with classical music, the version on the playlist is just what Spotify decides to feed me. If Dexter wants another version, he should let me know.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Higher Ground: 9
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are not the band I would guess would make a likely candidate for making the greatest Stevie Wonder cover, but here we are. The spiritual Higher Ground was an equally unlikely song pick. Wonder's version is solitary in a way, about one man's struggle to stay pure in a rotten world. The Peppers made the bold decision to turn this into a communal experience, as a group of people not just staying sane among endless corruption. There is a feeling that this is achieved by sticking together and looking out for one another. The Peppers achieve this effect through implication instead of changing the words. The guitar is rousing, as is the singing. It's one of my favorite Wonder songs, but I love the Peppers' take as much.

Mary Chapin Carpenter – Never Had It So Good: 6
This is a fine country song that unfortunately is now sandwiched in between two much better songs in the Biggest Fan playlist.

Gabriel Fauré – Requiem, Op. 48 : V. Pie Jesu: 9
This piece came on very strong for me early this morning, later again in the afternoon and now in the evening. This song feels good for the soul, in a way that each meaningful religious song should strife for.

In a strange coincidence we have the second song in a row name-checking Jesus in the title. Has this game become about who is the biggest fan of Christ? Take your vote: Dexter or today’s Elder. In the meantime, I should note I could only find a demo of the song on Spotify, so I added a YouTube-link below.

416. Spaceman 3 – Walkin’ with Jesus
Year: 1987

Biggest Fan: Elder (#281)

I think but I may be wrong that there were several of spacefaring individuals
I should know…. Spacemen 3 became Spiritualized as Jason Pierce vessel of awesome music.

He covered this song on the Spiritualized Royal Albert Hall concert with a lot of class.

And I think the album is the Perfect Prescription. More drugs related stuff !

Walkin with Jesus is a 9.
I think this link should work ?
