Songs of 2023 Discussion Thread

Post by Moonbeam »

I didn't see a topic for songs for this year, so I thought I'd start one.

Usually, I am very late to listening to new songs in a given calendar year, but I decided to jump in early this year. I'm very glad I have, as there have been lots of goodies already by artists I hadn't heard of before!

My favorites of the year so far:

1. Inji - "The One"

Addictive hip house by an artist who went viral on TikTok in 2022. I'm very much looking forward to what's to come from her!

2. Ella Vos - "Mindreader"

A nice bridge between electropop and art pop, it's packed with little synth touches amidst the building allure.

3. Miss Grit - "Lain (Phone Clone)"

Probably my favorite discovery of the year counting material from earlier. Her album Follow the Cyborg on February 24th is going to be a big favorite based on the singles, including this synthy alt-pop/rock song.

4. Biig Piig - "In the Dark"

Delicate and intimate with a lovely bass line right out of post punk.

5. Mazie - "It's Not Me (It's U)"

Gorgeous confessional song about heartbreak and self-disappointment.

6. Sans Soucis - "Merchants"

Wonky synthy alt-R&B with a vieo that's just as out there as the song! Hits all the right stimmy buttons for me.

7. Hemlocke Springs - "Stranger Danger!"

Packed with energy and sass and pockets of beauty!

8. Cathedral Bells x Rew - "Clinging to the Ground"

Sublime dream pop with some shoegazey overtones. Lush!

9. Arlo Parks - "Weightless"

I know bedroom pop has been all the rage lately, but it rarely has moved me like this.

10. Naomi Sharon - "Another Life"

There's a romantic fatalism about this song that seems to take more than a little from Sade.

Some others I've enjoyed:

Kali Uchis - "I Wish You Roses"
Q - "Luv (I Know I Want This For Real)"
Teen Blush - "Pity Sex"
Lucy Tun - "Kulture Klub"
Slowthai - "Selfish"

Two songs have made my Best of 2023 spreadsheet so far - $20 by boygenius and A&W by Lana Del Rey. I just had to immediately listen to A&W because I used to work at the restaurant namesake, though it seems as though this A&W might stand for "american whore" instead of Allen & Wright, which is of immeasurable disappointment to this former burger flipper.

Please inject the new Jessie Ware ("Pearls") into my VEINS. I guess this now makes me excited for her next album.

I thought Lana del Rey needed to ditch Jack Antonoff, but I guess I was wrong, "A&W" is one of her best songs.

I thought the new Janelle Monae was a big letdown after 5 years with no new music.

Tru, similar to Yoga. Hopefully she'll make more interesting music in the future.

The Beatles have a new song out. I kinda expected it to be a cash-grab and of middling quality, but it's actually pretty damn good.

Thanks DAn for your list. I'm OK with you for some of your songs. Jessis Ware have some stunnings songs.
But for me, for the moment, I have one song that has overwhelmed me emotionally, and which I would put at the top of the list of songs of the year, and that would be :
Arthur H - La vie.
It's been a long time since I've been so moved by an album and by a particular song.

I am ecstatic to see some NewJeans love here. Their music is ridiculously good (strong EP as well) and "Super Shy" is probably the most sublime hook-filled single of the year.

The extended cut of Dua Lipa's Houdini is fantastic - I wish they had released this version first. The Kevin Parker/Danny Harle influence is a lot more apparent in this version of the song

RS has published its top 100 songs of the year.

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... 1ffb8d6c57

Note that this list is likely to include some songs that were released in late 2022, because those songs had not become sufficiently well known before the publication of the 2022 list (which was likely in late November or early December).

I listened to "Begin Again" by Jessie Ware this morning and I was wondering the whole time why this was not the closing track. It feels absolutely grand, soaring and Jessie' vocals are never better. It can stand its ground against "Remember Where You Are" from her previous album too (which is not as good as I remember upon revisiting).

My favorite Jessie Ware song so far is "Running." I enjoy the interplay of the horns with her vocals in that song and it has a certain energy that revs me up at times.

It's been a long time since I've been so moved by an album and by a particular song.
The atmosphere and lyrics of this song touches me too. The initial sense of awe at being alive and protected. The fear, darkness, betrayal, and damage that follows. The healing and beauty in the end.

Thanks for the recommendation.
...will keep us together.
