2022 was a big year for Elvis, thanks to the biopic that revitalized streams of his songs. Honorio knows he’s trouble though, but don’t we love the danger? It’s The King’s second appearance here and the first bubblin’ under track of the year.

346. Elvis Presley - Trouble
Year: 1958
Album: King Creole
Biggest Fan: Honorio (#205)

Back on a trip to France just in time to see one of my nominations appearing on biggest fan!

First the catch-up:
342. Go-Go’s – Head over Heels (1984) 7/10
343. Hole – Northern Star (1998) 8/10
344. Broken Bells – Holding on for Life (2013) 6/10
345. Chris Isaak – Go Walking Down There (1995) 6/10

And then:

346. Elvis Presley - Trouble (1958) 10/10

Maury Dean included "Trouble" as one of the earliest proto-punk songs (along with Jerry Lee Lewis' "Break Up," Gene Vincent's "Race with the Devil," Jack Scott's "The Way I Walk" and Link Wray's "Rumble"). Written for the "King Creole" movie by Leiber and Stoller, it features stop-time riffs (Muddy Waters' style) during the verses and a powerful doubling of the tempo (adding hot New Orleans horns) on the second half. But mainly it includes a menacing and confrontational and, yeah, punk vocal take by Elvis.

Elvis Presley - Trouble: 9
I didn't actually know this one before the Elvis movie; it doesn't seem to be picked regularly as a stand-out. Based on the votes here, excluding Honorio, it seems that few here want to revive it. But it is a massive song, with a lot of swagger. I do think the proto-punk angle is farfetched, this is more of a crooner's version of the more menacing blues songs, indeed clearly influenced by Muddy Waters. Elvis makes it sound very big and he plays the bad guy surprisingly well. Strange that this is the same guy as the one who serenaded his boyhood pet dog in the previous Biggest Fan.

I saw these guys in 1981 at a stadium with a lineup that also included Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet, Outlaws, and .38 Special:

Look, having a hit song like yesterday is all well and good, but we are here for the obscure songs. Today we get one that has less than 1000 streams on Spotify and seems really unknown. Thanks to spiritualized, who I have sadly not seen around anymore in a while.

Woohoo! One year of this edition of Biggest Fan!
Let’s celebrate with an extra long track, the second classical piece from Schüttelbirne in a row. The version on the playlist is now the first that came up, but if Schüttelbirne has a favorite performance, please let me know.

350. Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 13, Op. 113: I. Babi Yar. Adagio
Year: 1962
Symphonie: No. 13

Don't worry I'm still lurking around, new job and all, slightly off hours and Christmas period over.

Fish or Cut Bait's definition : Stop vacillating and decide to act on or disengage from something.
Flour's little claim to fame was that Steve Albini played bass on the tour line-up, but you're right, a very very obscure band. Good guitars, drum machine and an ear for tunes.

347. The Marshall Tucker Band | "Can't You See": 6/10
348. Flour | "Fish or Cut Bait": 4/10
349. Paramore | "Told You So": 4/10
350. Dmitri Shostakovich | "Symphony No. 13, Op. 113: I. Babi Yar. Adagio": 10/10

The important version would be by Kirill Kondrashin since he premiered it after the original conductor left because Khruchev was not too happy about this piece of music, mostly because the lyrics are based on poems by Yevgeny Yevtushenko. In his poem "Babiyy Yar" (the basis of this movement) he dared to put the suffering of the Jews over the suffering of the Russian people (this was the accusation).
The version of Kondrashin you find on Spotify has changed lyrics as a compromise.
I recommend taking a look at the lyrics: http://shostakovich.hilwin.nl/op113.html
So here's another great version by Rudolf Barshai:

In total this symphony might be my favorite classical work.

Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 13, Op. 113: I. Babi Yar. Adagio: 7
It sure sounds massive. I sometimes struggle with this type of operatic singing. Still, there is something here, but truly I will probably need to hear it more than my usual 3 times. For now it feels like a 7 though.

In other news: I'm leaving for Rome tomorrow morning for a short vacation. I'll be back on Friday evening. At first I thought of giving you five songs to pass the time, but I have now decided against it. Perhaps these are good few days to catch up for those whove fallen behind? On Saturday I return to my regular schedule.

Back from Rome and what better way to celebrate the end of this short hiatus than with a song from yours truly’s list. I would perhaps have been too much to ask for one of the very few songs by an Italian artist from my list, so instead we get one of my favorite classic rock tracks.

351. Electric Light Orchestra – Do Ya
Year: 1976
Album: A New World Record
Biggest Fan: Rob (#306)

Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.
