I don't think this is NPR's actual "Best Albums of 2014" list - if you look at the intro on the site, it indicates that an official list is coming next week. They usually present an unranked top 50.

I hope they include Beyonce on their official list, too. Remember all those sources that published their 2013 lists early and then said they would make up for missing the album by including it on their 2014 lists? It'd be nice if some of them actually did that.

I always like the NPR year-end lists since they are among the most eclectic.

Seattle Symphony - John Luther Adams, Become Ocean

This album is highly unusual in that Luther Adams won the Pulitzer for that composition earlier this year. Usually, Pulitzer Prize winning pieces are rarely performed and can take decades to be recorded and released.

Updated with the full list (phew). It appears that the lists that Nick has in the opening post are lists solely accumulated by "All Songs Considered," a radio show on NPR. The other two longer lists are by NPR's staff in general.
