✅ Musikexpress: The 700 Best Songs Of All Time

Post by Federico »

The German Music Magazine "Musikexpress" will publish a list of the 700 best songs of all time next month. The songs will be chosen by a jury consisting of more than 200 People ( staff of the musikexpress, other critics, people from the music Business and musicians ). Later they will publish a reader's list. This will be very interesting. I think that the list from the jury could be eligible or am I wrong, Henrik?

Does this outlet lean more toward non-pop/R&B acts? I scanned some of the more recent acclaimed pop recordings, and they didn't seem to fare well.

Speaking of Musikexpress, the links for its other lists no longer work.

It will be published on 13th march. I hope I will find the time to post it, but it will be a hard work, if they don't publish it on the web site.

JR, it's a normal pop Magazine that actually leans a little bit toward electronic music. You can find the other lists here:

Thanks, sir. :)

Does the magazine do year-end songs lists? AM lists Top 100 Singles 1980-9 and Songs of the Year, but I don't see them on that link (I could be overlooking it, though).

Yes. The list is included in the EOY spreadsheets of AM. You can find all the lists (staff and readers) on poplist.de, but they didn't have a song list every year in the past.

Is this discussing the list? This looks like it's just one critic's top 10, though.

Yeah, that's just one member of their panel's top 10 list. If you scroll to the bottom, you can see links to a few more top 10s from their panel as well. I don't see anything for the composite top 700 though. I actually prefer individual lists since they are more idiosyncratic than a consensus list.

Kind of boring top 100. I think Autobahn deserves to be that high though, even if it's a German magazine.

Edit: I mean could definitely be more boring. I guess I've just seen so many lists :)

I DEMAND that Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone have at least two tracks on this list- she had two on the NME 500, and that's a shorter list. LOL

"In the Ghetto" is one of my favorite Elvis tracks, so nice to see that.

Just outside the top 100 is a rather "low" ranking for "Satisfaction."

Federico- have you peeked ahead and seen any Madonna? haha

Not a single Madonna song, as far as I can see. But, although I disagree with that, I think it's overall a reealy good list. Seven Nina Simone songs!

Wow! A Die Antwoord song! Though they wrote it as "Die Antwort". :angry-banghead:

That's because it isn't Die Antwoord, but a German band. ;)

This once again proves my time-tested theory: Germans love Bob Dylan.

It's South-African, no? But I guess both versions are acceptable in Germany.

Edit: My mistake! Sometimes I'm slow... And sorry about that panicked PM too Henrik about that random thing, I was just so mad at the person.

Edit: And obv I didn't see the song name before posting the first comment... I took German for freaking ten years in school, yet I don't speak it fluently. Anyway.

Edit: I'm glad Rodriguez got two songs in and Beefheart one, and that Cemetry Gates is in. Maybe even my favorite Smiths song.

Edit: Could have sworn Dylan had more songs than that compared to the Beatles. Just my selective memory I guess. Thanks for the work Blanco, and everyone who posted the list!

No. It's stated in each case that these are standards that have been played and recorded by countless artists. Some of them are mentioned by name, but no specific recordings have been chosen.

@Blanco:
There are two pages with descriptive statistics in the magazine. According to those stats, there are 17 songs by Bob Dylan and 14 by David Bowie in the list (I haven't counted for myself though).

They also mention that there are six songs from The Velvet Underground & Nico, five songs from The Beatles (White Album) and four songs each from Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited, Thriller, Nevermind and Purple Rain.

Wow- that is pretty shocking, not having at least one Madonna entry. Ah, well. Not like she's hurting in acclaim. ha

Well, seeing Hot Chip's "Over And Over" surpassing two of the best bands singles namely The Beatles "Something" and The Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" as number 100 was just a blast...Thanx Musikexpress for this magnificent list!!! :music-rockon:

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, this list also dissed another very acclaimed female- Björk. :o And PJ Harvey only has one entry.

I just can't, especially when something like Kylie Minogue's "Slow" is on the list over any Madonna or Björk song- really?

Henrik- I know there was discussion about weighting in terms of female acts. Is that still part of the plan? Because the male dominance on these lists- especially when they're this large- is rather outrageous. Some will say males just make better music, but I don't adhere to that. If the music's good, it's good, regardless of gender.

Having said all of that, the list does have some excellent selections, on the whole.

This is one of the best all-time songs lists I've seen from a critic. Right mix of established classics, underrated tracks by top artists, and eclectic selections.

I think it's a very good list too, because of its high level of "internationality". It's far from perfect, of course. But from my point of view, this list shows that the media devoted to music gradually expand their range of coverage.

In fact I am determined that it is most important the international representation, than the representation of gender. Even I feel that the first would solve the other. For example, I believe that (neutralizing or ignoring my own tastes), "Águas de Março" by Elis Regina & Tom Jobim should be among the top 10 songs ever. Or at least in the top 20. Or 50. Or 100. Or mentioned, at least! But it is not... :C
That, my friends, is tragic. At least for me.

"Slow" is AWESOME. Not saying that it's better than any Madonna or Björk song, but it totally belongs.

Exactly. Maybe the most enjoyable all-time list for me (except for the Dylan songs ;-) ) I really love their choices of song. A little bit of fresh air in all these same all-time lists.
