Part of why I deep-sixed a lot of the classical pieces on my songs list is cuz I just felt bad comparing them to the pop music and similar I enjoy. I adore the 1812 Overture, but how do I compare it to “No Rain”?

I totally agree.
I love classical music, I play violin and it's the kind of music I listen to the most, but I'd like to see no trace of it here.

For me, it's totally impossible to include a piece of classical music in the middle of popular works in the noble sense of the word. The way of appreciating one and the other seems too different to me. The question can already be asked for unsung jazz, in my opinion, especially when the pieces are very long or are parts of a larger work..

With the possible exception of contemporary or modern classical works. And even then... not sure!

Agreed. I have exceptions here and there. My big one is "Rhapsody in Blue" cuz I consider that one an extended jazz piece as much as a classical piece, and I do have my share of those on my list.

We'd love to see a list of the most acclaimed classical music recordings but agree that it makes close to no sense to just add those to the big albums list here. The current rule is, if we aren't mistaken, that the composer has to have been involved in the recording process in order for any classical albums to make the site, which is why these select few albums by modern composers such as Stockhausen, Cage, Reich, Glass, Pärt and Riley (and a few others) are here. They do seem a little out of place but we have no problem with their inclusion. But to have Gould's Goldberg Variations or Gardiner's Mass in B Minor appear among all these pop albums (probably only as bubblers anyway) would seem very weird. Even worse would be the inclusion of classical compositions in the song list. We already see in the current song poll that the question what a song-like work is, is left completely answered, which is why works are both allowed to be included in their entirety, or as single movements. It's completely arbitrary and there probably is no reasonable way to deal with that problem.

I'd agree with this. The length of classical music is at odds with the rest of the music on this site. With their addition there are several questions like, would compositions be listed as songs or albums? Would there be a specific recording for each piece? How would they be ranked, seeing as critics lists don't combine the two very often?

At best I could see a separate site for this kind of thing.

Symphonies= albums
Movements= songs

That said, I don’t think classical music belongs on acclaimed music.
This site is traditionally for 20th-21st century popular music. I love classical music, but it’s apples and oranges.

I plan to make a list on List Challenges featuring every album from the 2024 update, which I understand is currently 12130, in chronological order. Between now and when the 2024 update is completed is there a chance more albums will be added/removed, I'd like to know as it would be convenient for me to start the list now. I would then publish the top 3000 in order of acclaim once the 2024 update is completed.

Wow, cool!
Nothing is planned, but there might be a few more albums if I add another list.
Note that a few albums will be removed, since they are already on AM (see comments in the help wanted - background info topic, mostly from Harold).

By the sounds of it, I can add the final Excel Spreadsheet for the 2024 update to my current makeshift one, and filter out all the duplicates, to see what's been added. In regards to the albums that will be removed, I can remove them using Harold's comments, or if there are others that have not been seen, simply from my own observation. Many Thanks, Henrik.

Hi Henrik, I've been following the site for 5 years now and love the concept, so I made an account to ask if there may be an expected timeframe for when it could be completed? I also have another request for when it's done to invite you to participate in something related to the AM site once it updates since I know you have an interest in sharing your favorite music, so I await your response on that.

Dear everyone,

I have had a few awful weeks, with pain in back, neck and right arm. Nothing like the body problems I’ve experienced before. It might be herniated disc in the neck. My doctor don’t think an x-ray is necessary as the treatment is the same physiotherapy anyway. :(

Anyway, with these problems, a site update in 2024 is now sadly out of the question. I still hope to do an update in 2025, that will then also include 2024 end of year lists and 2020-2024 half-decade lists.

The Listeners' contact in AM was to be Henrik, the Norwegian tax collector. Henrik had one mission. To gather intelligence on the most acclaimed pop songs. But the Wild Hunt had found him first, and had broken his arm.

Dear Henrik,

the Humphreys feel obliged to say that we can't even imagine what you and your family are going through both on a physical and and on a mental level but we do hope that it will be just a phase that you'll pass as speedily as possible. Any concerns regarding the site must be considered secondary in such a situation.

Sorry to hear this! A few years back I was suffering very similar symptoms: sharp pain in my shoulder, numbness in my fingertips, weakness in my arm, etc. It turned out to be two herniated disks: 3/4 and 4/5. Physical therapy provided momentary relief but was ultimately ineffective and a waste of time. As soon as I had surgery replacing the defective disks with artificial ones, I had immediate relief (no pain and the quick return of full sensation and strength) and the downside has been minimal (I'm not supposed to ski or horseback ride anymore). I hope you are able to find the option that gets you relief (or that you already have)!
