Mental illness in movies

Post by Alena_03 »

It goes without saying that Hollywood has contributed a lot to the stigma of mental health. From outright dehumanizing portrayals in Psycho and Fight Club, to pretending like a mentally ill person can suddenly overcome their insecurities all at once in What About Bob?, to refusing to show the actual downsides to savantism, which there are several, to actually giving an empathetic portrayal a shot in Joker but giving it to a bigoted director who tried but ultimately fell apart by the end, we can't just uncritically praise movies like this. There was a time when Gone with the Wind was uncritically praised, but now we recognize its racism. Same goes for Silence of the Lambs and its transphobia. As a user who is autistic, bipolar, and has multiple personalities, I would like to civilly call for engaging in media more critically. Ableism and sanism is bigotry, and we must be aware of that.
