Grand Funk Railroad – I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home): 7
I have a soft spot for stuff like this, so I was bound to like it, although this is also a song that could have been a bit tighter I feel.

It’s only a bit over two weeks since we last had a Vampire Weekend song, but here they are again (coincidentally a day after Toni’s last pick). They take Danielle Haim with them as a special guest.

Vampire Weekend, featuring Danielle Haim – We Belong Together: 4
What I usually admire about Vampire Weekend is how they make music that sounds like it should be too hipster or too cute for its own good, but almost always they keep it from going too far, making the songs fun and engaging, instead of annoying. With such an approach to music, however, it is almost inevitable that from time to time they release something that actually does manage to fall of the precipice. This song is for me a very clear example. Sure, Danielle Haim's vocals are nice and there is clever take on opposites attract in the lyrics, but it ends up sounding way to precocious for me.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds are such an obvious fit for this game (many famous albums, but few agreed-upon songs) that it’s strange we only got them once during the first edition of Biggest Fan and they only now debut for the second edition. At least they seem to be still styrofoamboots’ baby.

I understand the criticisms of We Belong Together, but the end of that song is just so joyful it's hard for me not to love it.

Interestingly starchman chose one of the very few tracks from Volume II with actual beats.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Nobody’s Baby Now: 7
Seems a bit of a dry run for what would become one of Cave's most famous songs, Into My Arms. No, the lyrical meaning doesn't quite line up, but really when this song starts with it's biblical allusions in search of love I am immediately transported to the later song. The melody seems close to, although it doesn't have as good a flow. Certainly Into My Arms is stronger and richer, but Cave is such a strong singer that this one also works for me.
Aphex Twin - #19: 8
Beats or no beats, this is tranquility at its most sublime.

Only very recently did I claim that BleuPanda has had only electronic tracks here, but that streak is broken with today’s song. It bubbles under on AM.

There is nothing wrong with this per se, but it is run-of-the-mill to a fault. The lyrics, the music, the singing. It's all a dime a dozen and I have a hard time believing this will stick with me, especially in the very long tradition of the singer-songwriter genre.

Heavy on atmosphere and detail. It works well, but I wonder if in the end it will stay with me.

It happens at last. The chances of it happening were always slim, but here we are: we get to rate someone’s #1, in this case Karla’s. The song in question, which has a lot of Spotify plays, was released as a single after the death of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington (the album was released before his death though), so it likely carries some extra meaning for his fans.

378. Linkin Park – One More Light - 7 - truthfully I suppose in many ways this is more of a 5 or 6 but sometimes outside factors can't help but affect your take on a song, for me it is difficult to deny the profundity it gained in the wake of Chester Bennington's untimely death.

This is a tricky one. It is very tempting to see this as a sort of farewell by Chester Bennington and a plea to not be forgotten. The song wasn't actually written by Bennington, but came from Mike Shinoda as a tribute to a friend of his that had also passed away. There is nothing wrong of course with fans who embrace this song as a hymn to Bennington. Still, without that context it is rather a weak ballad, one that solely depends on touching lyrics, as I don't think that musically or vocally this plays to the band's strengths. Certainly, in the long history of rock ballads this doesn't stand out all that well. I also don't have too deep a connection with Bennington to get anything out of this song because of his passing.

378. Linkin Park – One More Light - 8
Re: Biggest Fan Songs - 2nd Edition: 301 - 400
Even as a huge fan of LP, I find One More Light to be one of the blandest albums of the 2010s. Everything I love about the band is non-existent in that record and the title track, yeah, it is not good.

Real discovery time. Prosecutorgodot’s latest entry is perhaps known among the biggest anime afficionados, but information on the music is so scarce that I doubt it anyone outside its niche has ever heard it. I should note that prosecutorgodot had the word “Abridged” in brackets after the title on his list, but if that is another version than the one in the YouTube-link below (the song doesn’t seem to be on Spotify) I haven’t been able to locate it. In fact, there is little I can say all that certain about this. The musician isn’t on RYM. I don’t know if there was ever an album with this song on it or if it just appeared in the anime series. I’m not even 100% sure of the year. If prosecutorgodot has anything more to say, please do.
EDIT: Prosecutorgodot gave me the right version, which is shorter than the usual one. it's added to this post. If you still want to hear the longer version, Honorio found it in Spotify and links it in a post below.

Konno Yukari – Tokimeki no Doukasen: 6
This song, in the version I heard, is one of those among the rich tradition of anime songs that sound impossibly upbeat regardless of the tone of the series it accompanies (I don't know the tone of this specific anime though). Also as in many cases the production is very tacky. In fact, I would go as far as saying this song sounds rather bad, but despite the sheer limitations it manages to be catchy and bouncy. I have to give it that.
