Finally! I already thought that he would never leave his ex-post.

Expectedly, the republicans have voted that actions have no consequences, 43-57.

I'm honestly shocked that 7 Republicans had the backbone to vote to convict. I thought we'd be getting Romney, Collins, and Murkowski, but anyone else is a big surprise to me.

If you consider yourself a conservative, where your #1 talking point is "accountability," there is no reasonable excuse for re-electing these "conservative" monsters in Congress, because it's clear they have no desire to be accountable, or have no idea what accountability is.

I mean, it's pretty clear the sole purpose of the current Republican party is violence and hatred. They had no platform at their convention, just supporting the Trump family. They stand for nothing but obstruction and attempting to trigger the next Civil War. The American government is completely lopsided and has consistently consolidated power towards conservatives, thus shifting that party more and more toward extremism because they can. We've finally reached the point where that shift leads into fascism. The proportion of representation in the Senate is horrific; conservatives have been infinitely rewarded for the admittance of a bunch of underpopulated rural territory as full states.

It just doesn't make sense that Wyoming and the two Dakotas each get the same amount of Senators as California and New York. There's a push to counteract this by adding D.C. and Puerto Rico, but the system shouldn't work like this in the first place. There just doesn't seem to be an endpoint where the U.S. government actually represents its population because the only people with authority to fix it benefit from the flaws.

So there's no convincing conservatives to drop their party due to accountability; they have always been the party of hypocrisy. The mask is simply off now. Why would they ever seek change when they can dominate elections even while always losing the popular vote? Power for the sake of power is what the conservative base wants, and that is what their politicians give them.

I'm pretty broken about this right now. If trying to overthrow the government so you can retain power doesn't rise to the level of an impeachable offense, then I don't know what does. And now the cowardly GOP, concerned with nothing beyond their own political futures, has left the door open for the lunatic to return in 4 years. BleuPanda addressed the problems of the overrepresentation of the rural, underpopulated states that allows 40 percent of the country to rule the 60 percent majority really well. Even more baffling to me is the antiquated "electoral college." The Presidential election is a national election, not a state election, so it should be determined by the clear majority. Shouldn't matter where people choose to live. Individual states have plenty of flexibility to make laws that affect the people that live there. It makes no sense whatsoever that they're given a weighted advantage for choosing our President, as well. But it will never change, since the Dakotas, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, etc. will always have 2 senators each, and they know full well the loss of power for them if things were to ever be fair.

The Republican Party isn’t just about hate, also giving billionaires disproportionate input over the laws that govern their billions. They just pander to the hate vote cause it’s easy.

Well, as a small consolation, Trump's reputation has taken a major hit. Since he got deplatformed by Twitter and left the White House, he hasn't gotten to change the national conversation on a nearly hourly basis; so the scene at the Capitol has just stuck around and stuck around as a defining legacy moment.

Here was something I saw on Twitter that sums up the perils of keeping up the Trump worship: "New @QuinnipiacPoll captures the squeeze on GOP. Vast majority of its voters (75%) want big future role for Trump. But 21% don't want a big role for him; 24-28% of Rs blame him for the riot. If even a minority of those uneasy Rs drift away from a Trump-led GOP, it's catastrophic."

A split in the Republican party is a best case scenario here, but they're not going to jump to the democratic party unless they can break through the republican propaganda that they're all socialists who want to take their guns and cancel anyone who disagree with them.

They don't have to fully switch teams because of Drumpf (lol), they could become no-shows in '22 and/or '24, or become right-leaning Independents instead of Democrats. Some of these races can get very close, so any loss of votes can make a big difference.
