93rd Academy Awards - Predictions

Post by Schüttelbirne »

The nominations come out in a few days (the 15th), so I thought I'd share the predictions I made. They don't normally reward what I like best, but predicting is always fun. This year is gonna be hard to predict, so I'll be interested to see how many I got wrong.
It totally might be that I'm underestimating Da 5 Bloods and overestimating News of the World or others, but this is how it looks now and I don't think I will change it unless anything major happens.

Top 5 in alphabetical order for all categories with an alternate below it. Red is the predicted winner of the line-up though those may change once the actual nominations are announced. The hardest categories are always the shorts, but I also have no idea who will Actress (Davis, Day and Mulligan could take it and I wouldn't be surprised).

I'm only going to predict the Best Picture noms since I haven't been following the awards season that closely this year.

Best Picture

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Mank
Minari
Nomadland
Promising Young Woman
Soul
Sound of Metal
The Trial of the Chicago 7

I also think that Nomandland will win Best Picture
There is No More Firmament.

Given this year is such a weird departure from before I have no idea what they’ll nominate but if they nominate The Trial of the Chicago 7 for best picture I think that might win, the Oscars love movies like that.

Or course Mank might win since it’s about the movie industry...though it seemed that critics were a little lukewarm on that one when it came out.

I hope not. I was so disappointed in that movie. Horrible directing and outside of Cohen and Abdul-Mateen II horribly acted.

Haven’t seen really any of the above movies but Judas and the black Messiah was pretty great and gives Oscar vibes, especially for the lead whose name is escaping me. I though Lakeith Steinfeld did pretty great too but he doesn’t seem as likely.

I changed my predictions a bit, mostly to put more focus on Judas and the Black Messiah which is now not the alternate but rather the predicted Best Picture nom. I also put it in Cinematography, taking The Trial of the Chicago 7 out. Now watch it get nominated...

I didn't watch any of the movies yet, but I will soon. As of now I just hope my Glenn Close prediction is wrong. I know everybody wants her to win finally, but they should wait for the Sunset Boulevard musical.

You probably mean Daniel Kaluuya. I (along with most other people) predict him to win Best Supporting Actor. Haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on whether that category placement is warranted or if it's category fraud (wouldn't be the first time a lead actor wins in the supporting category). I agree about Stanfield; Best Actor is packed, so I hardly see a chance for him.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Nomadland seem to be the frontrunners, but I'm wary of predicting the former because of it's by Netflix. I'm not sure if the pandemic changed their minds, but a part of the Academy will put the Netflix movies last on their ranked ballot to prevent them from winning. It already happened with Roma (well, probably), so I wouldn't be surprised.

It's a little fraudulent, he's in it for 46:09 (36.09%) and Stanfield in it for 49:51 (39.75%). If you look at it from a true supporting then he isn't in the movie overwhelmingly but compared to Stanfield he is. The most fraudulent was Mahershala Ali in Green Book. He was in it for 1:06:38 (51.28%). The time is the most in Oscar History for BSA winner.

Here's the nominations. The ones I didn't predict (and also didn't put as alternates) are in color. Most of them were clearly in the running; the absolute surprise was somebody showing up in Supporting Actor who was campaigned in Lead Actor. :-o
