All Time Television Poll, LIST THREAD

Post by Holden »

Hi! I’m surprised to see there’s never been a poll like this on the forum before! I was watching my favorite show last night and thought that this would be really fun to run!

The Rules:
1. Submit a ranked list of your favorite television series. I’m not going to be very limiting! Drama, comedy, reality, documentary miniseries, whatever you want, as long as it’s in an episodic format. They can be ongoing series as well. If there’s any questions, let me know and I can make a call on them!
2. I’ll be using 100*((25+1)/(Rank+25)) as the formula.
3. Lists can be as long as you would like.
4. I think that, as someone who hasn’t seen a LOT (still a healthy enough amount to participate) of TV, my list should be worth less than those who have seen a lot of television. Therefore, for this poll, I would like to make lists worth fewer points if they are shorter. However, if people are against this, I won’t do it! Voice your opinions below.
Here is how I will be doing this portion:
If your list is under 100 long, I will be using the following formula:
Weight=SQRT(SQRT(List Length/100))
If your list is 100 or more long, you get a weight of 1.
5. The deadline will be February 28th. However, if that’s too soon, let me know!

Not a huge TV watcher, but here's my list. I had no idea how to rank a show like Jeopardy or The Daily Show in with scripted dramas/comedies, but here I go. Also, there's a decent amount of anime. What can I say? I like cartoons.

1. Breaking Bad
2. The Simpsons
3. Adventure Time
4. Mad Men
5. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
6. Avatar: The Last Airbender
7. Futurama
8. Arrested Development
9. The Office (U.S. version)
10. Rick and Morty

15. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
16. Kill la Kill

I'm only a casual TV watcher and haven't really even finished most shows on my backlog. But I do feel confident enough to submit a Top 100 or so.

My list will probably be interesting because most of what I do watch is animated, both Western and Eastern. And I was unsure how to include one-offs and miniseries. Though I did compensate and include them all.

1) Firefly
2) Primeval
3) Avatar: The Last Airbender
4) Mr. Robot (still need to watch the last season)
5) Breaking Bad
6) The Twilight Zone (1959)

8) Band of Brothers [miniseries]
9) Black Mirror
10) SpongeBob SquarePants
11) Planet Earth II [miniseries]
12) Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

14) Star Trek: The Original Series
15) Clannad: After Story

I'm mostly restricting myself to shows that I've seen all the way through several times. For someone who runs a site on ranking TV shows, I actually haven't seen a lot of classic shows :( I really have lots of work to do...

1. Justice League (2001)
2. Person of Interest (2011)
3. Futurama (1999)
4. Looney Tunes (1930)
5. Bojack Horseman (2014)
6. The Sopranos (1999)
7. Breaking Bad (2008)
8. Tom and Jerry (1940)
9. Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
10. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)
11. The Office (2005)
12. 30 Rock (2006)
13. Young Justice (2010)
14. Rick and Morty (2013)
15. Man to Man (2017)
16. Black Mirror (2011)
17. Big Mouth (2017)
18. Better Call Saul (2015)
19. Columbo (1968)
20. SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
21. Robot Chicken (2005)
22. Game of Thrones (2011)
23. Stranger Things (2016)
24. La Fiera (1999)
25. Death Note (2006)
26. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
27. Cobra Kai (2018)
28. The Simpsons (1989)

Yup! It holds a soft spot for me because it was the first primetime drama I was "allowed to watch", having been 12 when it came out. I know it's not necessarily "better" than other shows on the list, but I just love it too much.

Also, I ranked them for polling purposes, but my Top 3 are basically a tie. I watch the heck out of all three and can flip flop between calling Firefly, Primeval, OR Avatar as my favorite show. They are all just that good.

As someone who also hasn't seen a lot, I completely agree with this.

I haven't finished The Wire yet, so it will probably end up higher. I know 24's formula got a little stale and convoluted, but at its best, nothing was more engaging or compelling to me. I rate it ahead of the other top dramas because I prefer - all else being equal - to see how a moral hero (Jack Bauer) can overcome seemingly impossible circumstances rather than seeing an immoral hero causing things to unravel (Walter White, Don Draper, Frank Underwood, almost everyone in Game of Thrones, etc.).

1 | 24
2 | South Park
3 | Seinfeld
4 | Game of Thrones
5 | Breaking Bad
6 | Dexter
7 | The Sopranos
8 | Stranger Things
9 | Fargo

20 | Planet Earth

23 | House of Cards
24 | Narcos

We've all watched a lot of TV, I'm sure, but my guess about why a poll has never transpired is because, like with video games, there is just so f'ing much of it -- many different (time-consuming) eras, as well as numerous country-specific hits for TV. I'll do a list anyway, sometime, because it's one of those lists where you can't help yourself regardless.

Five years ago my list would have been heavily dominated by classic series from the seventies and eighties, mostly because I watched a lot of reruns and DVD boxes. In the past five years however I've discovered several great recent series, so my list is pretty balanced now. Some of these titles are generally known classics, but I also include many titles that probably won't get a second vote. These are personal favorites that for some reasons aren't as widely recognized. I hope these will serve as a tip. I've included several mini-series, often British novel adaptations, but no non-fiction or reality shows. The UK and USA are the dominating countries, but others are represented as well. The year is always that of the first season, not including pilots.

Top 125 TV Series:
1 | Fawlty Towers | 1975
2 | Bron [The Bridge] | 2011
3 | House of Cards | 1990

6 | Alfred Hitchcock Presents | 1955
7 | Borgen | 2010
8 | Derrick | 1974

I haven't watched nearly enough television, though I feel like I've seen at least an episode or two from most major shows. The below shows are among the few that managed to draw my attention enough to watch on my own time when I would usually choose a video game or movie (and I was getting ready to start up both The Handmaid's Tale and Game of Thrones last year but suddenly decided to read the books instead). My ranking is also based on what I consider the peak of the show. I generally prefer animation to live action, which is one big advantage TV has over movies for me.

1. Twin Peaks
2. Bojack Horseman
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion
4. Breaking Bad
5. Arrested Development
6. Avatar: The Last Airbender
7. Steven Universe
8. The Good Place
9. Cowboy Bebop
10. Schitt's Creek
11. Futurama
12. Adventure Time
13. Spongebob Squarepants
14. Black Mirror
15. The Simpsons
16. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
17. Spaced
18. Monty Python's Flying Circus
19. The Twilight Zone
20. Gravity Falls
21. The Legend of Korra
22. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
23. Over the Garden Wall
24. Death Note
25. Firefly
26. Orange is the New Black
27. Rick and Morty
28. FLCL
29. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
30. Chappelle's Show

I'll add my own list eventually, but I've been thinking about Game of Thrones a lot lately. Or haven't, I guess. It's interesting to me how after the last season I just lost all interest in it. Even with other shows I've seen (Breaking Bad, The Leftovers, etc.) I find myself coming back to thinking about them. GOT just completely evaporated from my consciousness after what I really thought was a terrible finish. Not saying that you also had to dislike the ending, but I've seen a lot of shows end badly, but not a single one has completely absolved most of the series that came before it of its luster as horribly as the last three episodes of Game of Thrones did.

Not in the All Time list, but new EOY lists are included in the 21st century portion.

Agree with you on GoT. It was top 3 show ever for me until the last season. Now it's more in the 5-10 range for me. That's why it's hard for me to rank shows that are still going on right now like Succession, Better Call Saul, Atlanta, etc because those shows aren't complete yet. GoT is still one of the best shows I've ever seen but it fell off greatest of all time status for me the last season.

Seriously great list, it's helped me remember a fair few shows I've left off my draft list (most glaringly, Inside No. 9)

For the longest time, I defined myself as a Simpsons fan above all other pop culture allegiances (the main ones being my fandom of R.E.M., The Clash and Nottingham Forest in revolving order), so it was the natural choice for my #1 here, despite not keeping up with it for most of the past decade. Other than the Springfieldianites, It's Always Sunny is my highest ranked show that I've not seen in its totality:

1. The Simpsons
2. The Sopranos
3. The Century of the Self
4. The Day Today
5. Peep Show
6. Blackadder (II-IV; the show hadn't hit its stride in Series I)
7. Life on Mars
8. Father Ted
9. State of Play
10. The [UK] Office
11. Fawlty Towers
12. The Thick of It
13. The Inbetweeners
14. I'm Alan Partridge
15. The Young Ones
16. Phoenix Nights
17. Happy Valley
18. Rome
19. Nathan Barley
20. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
21. Ken Burns' The Vietnam War
22. Inside No. 9
23. Brass Eye
24. The Power of Nightmares
25. Line of Duty
26. Better Call Saul
27. The Trip
28. The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies
29. No Angels
30. Breaking Bad
31. Knowing Me, Knowing You
32. Louis Theroux's various documentaries if that's not cheating too much? I can't decide between The Most Hated Family in America, Louis & the Nazis and Louis Theroux: Savile
33. Early Doors
34. Grandma's House
35. Ozark
36. Time Trumpet
37. Cheers
38. The Boondocks
39. National Treasure
40. Deutschland '83
41. The Royle Family
42. Only Fools & Horses
43. Harry Enfield & Chums
44. Dr. Foster
45. Rock Profiles
46. World on Fire
47. The Fast Show
48. Teachers
49. Boardwalk Empire (didn't keep up it with it past Season 2, I don't think I got over a certain someone's (Jimmy's) death)
50. Archer (again, haven't seen too much of it but loved what I've seen)
51. Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe
52. Pointless
53. The Undateables
54. First Dates
55. Room 101 (strongly prefer Frank Skinner & early Paul Merton years)
56. Californication
57. QI (without meaning to avoid Sandi Toksvig, I've only seen the Stephen Fry era)
58. Extras (patchier than The Office but the last episode speaks a lot of truth)
59. Taskmaster
60. Friday Night Dinner
61. South Park (doesn't always get it right but when it does, it's brave AND hilarious)
62. Family Guy (would've been challenging for the top if it hadn't been rescued from cancellation, it's been falling off a cliff since)

EDIT: Added No Angels and Rock Profiles, thanks for your patience and for throwing the poll, Holden!

Honourable mentions (haven't seen enough episodes):
Weeds
American Dad
The A Word
Game of Thrones (I must be the only person in the world to say this but I haven't made it past the third series yet)

Top 10 Theme Tunes
1. The Wire: Tom Waits et al - Way Down in the Hole
2. The Sopranos: Alabama 3 - Woke up This Morning
3. Peep Show: Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
4. Teachers: Belle & Sebastian - The Boy with the Arab Strap
5. Match of the Day: Barry Stoller - Main Theme
6. The Royle Family: Oasis - Half the World away
7. Game of Thrones: Ramin Djawadi - Main Title
8. Only Fools & Horses: John Sullivan - Hooky Street
9. Weeds: Various - Little Boxes
10. Friday Night Dinner: Miike Snow - Animal (Punks Jump Up Remix)

Top Variant of The Simpsons Theme Tune
JFK Homage (End Credits of Who Shot Mr. Burns Part One)

Here's my list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls076935033/

As you can see from my list, I'm a big fan of anime and Asian dramas.

Therefore, for this poll, I would like to make lists worth fewer points if they are shorter. However, if people are against this, I won’t do it! Voice your opinions below.
I'm curious how you're going to calculate this. It might encourage people to include TV series that they don't really like, just to have a longer list.

That's really not how people operate on this forum, in my opinion. I'm not dropping their contribution too much, and I doubt anyone will actually do this.

Hell yes to Utena! I thought i was the only one who was going to vote for it.

Ooh Rose of Versailles... I haven't seen it, but the aesthetics are appealing.

I remember loving Now and Then, but I watched it so long ago that I don't feel comfortable placing it too high.

My sister loves Nodame as well.

...On the other hand, Shinsekai Yori is my least favorite show of all time, and I can talk endlessly about how terrible it is. I have a whole Google Doc of my comments about the show if you're interested.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Google Doc, but I probably won't be able to have a discussion about the anime, because I don't remember it that well.

The Rose of Versailles has some similarities with Utena, so I think you'll probably like it.

I’ll also note that my list deliberately left out miniseries, which I feel like are hard to judge next to more traditional series (though why I didn’t feel the same about game shows or talk shows I don’t know). In any case, here are some of my favorite miniseries:

Planet Earth, Planet Earth 2, The Blue Planet, Blue Planet II, Band of Brothers, Chernobyl, The Queen’s Gambit

TV shows are often notorious for being unable to stick the landing -- usually running for far too long or wrapping up poorly -- so I'm usually ranking a show's hot period (or simply what I've happened to watch) instead of the entire show. I grew up on '80s TV, but I feel like modern shows blow away a lot of older TV -- it's more a matter of catching up with all of it.

1. The Simpsons
2. Naruto: Shippuden
3. Star Trek: The Next Generation
4. Breaking Bad
5. Twin Peaks
6. 24
7. Cheers
8. Star Trek
9. The X-Files
10. Seinfeld

11. Ken Burns' Civil War
12. The Transformers
13. The Wallace and Ladmo Show (local kids show)
14. The Wire
15. DuckTales (old)
16. The Walking Dead
17. Aqua Teen Hunger Force
18. Reno 911!
19. Mad Men
20. Sesame Street

21. Naruto
22. The Sopranos
23. The Twilight Zone
24. Siskel and Ebert
25. WWF Raw Is War
26. South Park
27. Sherlock
28. Regular Show
29. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
30. Good Eats

31. ESPN 30 for 30 (documentary series)
32. Late Night with David Letterman

Even moreso than for albums or movies, this is really limited by what I actually managed to see.

I'm (mostly) only considering the part of the show I enjoyed, so I didn't penalize too much for seasons I didn't like (though Dexter possibly dropped a bit due to how massively bad it got), otherwise Community might have been a few steps lower (the rest of the top 10 though, whatever people might think of GoT last season, didn't have very low points for me, save for Parks & Rec first season).

1) Community
2) Buffy the Vampire Slayer
3) Last Week Tonight
4) Parks & Recreation
5) Game of Thrones
6) How I Met Your Mother
7) That 70's Show
8) Skins (Uk)
9) Rick & Morty
10) Breaking Bad
11) Message à Caractère Informatif
12) South Park
13) Firefly
14) Freakazoid!
15) The Simpsons
16) Monty Python's Flying Circus
17) Big Mouth
18) Only Connect (a fantastic BBC tv game show)
19) Stranger Things
20) Brooklyn Nine-Nine
21) Planet Earth II
22) The Good Place
23) Tales from the Crypt
24) Arrow
25) Saturday Night Live
26) Arrested Development
27) Misfits
28) WWE Smackdown
29) Animaniacs
30) Scrubs
31) Dexter

Shows I haven't seen all episodes of are cursive. There's obviously a lot of stuff I haven't had the time or the possibility to see.
I feel like shows that are not good in the beginning, but get better over time are better than shows that get worse over time, specifically when they become mediocre like Dark or completely lose their shit like Transparent did. The final episode of that show might be the worst episode (or movie) I have ever seen.
There's also this weird thing about anthology series: AHS: Asylum would easily be Top 10 for me, but stuff like Coven or Cult is pushing it down to 40 (similar to American Crime Story). Black Mirror, however only rarely has episodes that are actually bad, even if some of them are repetitive.
One day, the boy came upon the monster who had gone west.

"I have a name!" said the boy, "And it's such a wonderful one at that!"

But the monster who went west replied, "Who needs a name? I'm perfectly happy without one. After all, that's what we are - nameless monsters."

The boy ate up the monster who went west.

At last he had found a name, but there was no longer anyone to call him by it.

6. South Park S15E07: You‘re Getting Old
This is probably my favorite episode of South Park too. For a show that is constantly irreverent and mocking in its humor, it's a shockingly bittersweet and totally sincere episode. The montage with "Landslide" at the end just kills me.

86) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
I guess I am the only Brony on AM. Kind of expected, in fact, I was almost afraid to rank it. But glad I sent in my vote for it.

May have been underwhelming in later seasons, but still good.

I knew you were an excellent product with a perfect corporate symbiosis ! See you at the COGIP !

Seriously, a lot of funny things came out of Canal + (Les Nuls l'émission, Les Guignols de l'Info which would be high in my list if I didn't consider them as part of another show..., la Cape et l'Epée (though some of the funniest Les Robins des Bois skits were on Comédie, before they moved to Canal), les Deschiens...) but I don't think any made me laugh as hard as Message à Caractère Informatif.
And I'm pretty sure direct translations to English would work perfectly !

I just updated my list to bump up Schitt's Creek; everything else simply moved down a spot (I just finished it this weekend)
