What will be the most acclaimed films of 2020?
Top ten lists will start coming out in just over a month for movies. Anyone have ideas on what will make the most top ten lists?
Below are some of my guesses, but COVID's impact on the film industry make this very challenging to predict in 2020:
01. Nomadland
02. Mank
03. Da 5 Bloods
04. Never Rarely Sometimes Always
05. Soul
06. All of the Small Axe Anthology films
07. First Cow
08. Palm Springs
09. David Byrne's American Utopia
10. Bad Education
Others that will likely place high:
The Vast of Night
One Night in Miami
Tenet
The Father
Hillbilly Elegy
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
Hamilton
Kajillionaire
Bacurau
Boys State
News of the World
Dick Johnson is Dead
The Trial of the Chicago 7
The Assistant
Ammonite
The Invisible Woman
Beanpole
Time
Shirley
Promising Young Woman
Vitalina Verela
Crip Camp
Driveways
Sorry We Missed You
On the Rocks
Next Goal Wins
Emma.
Borat: Subsequent MovieFilm
Wonder Woman
I'm sure I'm missing a ton. I'd love to hear what others think!

I'd add Celine Sciamma's Portrait Of A Lady On Fire - don't know how widely that was shown in the US.

Wolfwakers should be a lock
" Ah, yes! Our meager restitution"

That’s already on TSPDT as a 2019 film (4th for the year, 193 overall for the 21st century)Duncan Thaw wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 9:14 pm I'd add Celine Sciamma's Portrait Of A Lady On Fire - don't know how widely that was shown in the US.

Re: What will be the most acclaimed films of 2020?
I have only seen #3 and #4 so far. The former has some great performances, particularly Delroy Lindo, but fails miserably in portraying compelling Vietnamese characters. The latter is great and I am pleasantly surprised to see Sharon Van Etten in it.Future Critic wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 8:09 pm Top ten lists will start coming out in just over a month for movies. Re: What will be the most acclaimed films of 2020?
Related to this: do we have enough of a film fandom on the forum for an EOY movies poll? I'd be happy to run it if people were interested.
Re: What will be the most acclaimed films of 2020?
I think the problem has always been the uneven release of films throughout the world, which I imagine might be even worse than usual this year. We certainly have enough movie buffs, but the actual ability to see films the year they come out isn't enough of a universal experience for accurate results.
Re: What will be the most acclaimed films of 2020?
Nomadland is probably going to be the most acclaimed movie of the year. I have also heard that News of the World will be in the top 10, but I'm not sure yet.
Unfortunately, In my country I should wait for a movie to be available on Blu-Ray unless it begins streaming on Netflix,... instead of theatrical release. It means I will be able to download a movie on my laptop 2 or 3 months after its theatrical release.

One of the only 2020 movies I’ve actually seen is I’m Thinking of Ending Things and honestly it really left me wanting more. I’m sure a lot of you have seen it, what did you think of it?

And per Holden's question, I adored I'm Thinking of Ending Things - although I know it's not for everyone and I'm speaking as a longtime Kaufman diehard.

Re: What will be the most acclaimed films of 2020?
I thought it was pretty good, and I like Kaufman enough, but honestly it just totally lost me at the end, and sort of made all the build off feel lack luster. I won’t spoil it, but I’m sure you know what sequence I’m speaking off. Usually I like weird films, but I guess I just didn’t get this one, you know?acroamor wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 7:18 pm AV Club's Top List

It's strange for me that Palm Springs is on this list, as for me the film does not completely reach this list. Does anyone agree with me or do I think so myself?

I do not think there are going to be a lot of differences between TSPDT's list and this one. (TSPDT is going to update its 21st century list during this month).
Surprisingly, The Father didn't make the list! It has received 87 on Metacritic.
