Thanks for starting the roll-out Holden.

The year, director and country of #201: Leviathan should be 2014, Andrey Zvyagintsev and Russia.

Great presentation Holden! Thank you for starting the countdown so quickly.
Good results too. I like the combination of art house cinema and commercial Hollywood stuff.
My favorite surprise was the high placement of Die andere Heimat (Home from Home at #107). I think I should have put it (much) higher on my list (what a great movie it is, maybe the second best of the Heimat “movies” after Heimat II).
The biggest omissions for me (the movies I haven’t seen yet but are on my wish list)

104. Climax (2018)
Enter the Void was one of my favorite movies of 00’s. I bought the blu ray of Climax but didn’t received it before deadline of this poll. I have the movie now and will watch it soon.
112. Eighth Grade (2018)
121. Joker (2019)
I’m probably the only one who hasn’t seen this yet. Will watch it soon. Maybe the biggest surprise on the list (not in top 100!).
132. Hard to Be a God (2013)
I remember when this was on a Russian movie film week (in Helsinki). I missed the screening and have regretted it since.
135. Midsommar (2019)
Will watch it soon (probably next week).
157. Samsara (2011)
Not have had easy opportunity to watch (yeah it was on festivals and stuff but I skipped the screening). Will watch it someday.
171. Corn Island (2014)
Like Hard to Be God I almost went to the screening when this was on Espoo Cine movie festival (the movie was very new and didn’t have many reviews if any. It sounded interesting but I skipped it anyway (and regretted the omission right away)
201. Leviathan (2012)
The movie has been on my wish list a long time but still haven’t seen it.

Looking forward to see top 100.

Good presentation. My number 2 is already gone: The Skin I Live In. Pedro Almodóvar at his very best, with a mixture of absurdity and the question of gender issues approached in an unconventional manner. Also good music by Alberto Iglesias.

That you did! Issue with translation on my end, I’ll update the list soon with the change.

Might want to check my other foreign entries because I listed the original title if the alphabet was used. :)

While I voted for it, I'm still surprised that The Wolf of Wall Street managed to rank so high. Great movie, but I thought its divisive nature would hurt it.

Anyway, great rollout so far, Holden! I noticed that you forgot to list the points in Inside Out though.

Get Out isn’t a great film because of its excellent pacing, strongly defined characters, and mastery of tone. It’s a great film because it never loses sight of its concept. Peele understands that, when a black man meets his white girlfriend’s parents for the first time, there’s going to be a lot of unease. He’s taking that uncertainty and fear of things going off the rails and dialing it up to eleven. It’s pretty uncommon to see a film with a concept that’s this gutsy, and even more uncommon that it’s executed so confidently. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie.

The first and second Toy Story movies dealt with setbacks that could be put right. As the producer John Lasseter says, "When you're broken, you can be fixed; when you're lost, you can be found; when you're stolen, you can be recovered. But there's no way to fix being outgrown by the child." What the film does so beautifully is to twist the existential crisis of a toy into a reckoning of our younger selves. It understands how we attach fond significance to those things that have been mute companions – and witnesses – through the years, and have measured our lost time. It is a poignancy that gathers such force by the end that my eyes, already moistened at the edges, started brimming helplessly. Discarding my 3-D specs I fled the cinema via the echoing stairwell of the emergency exit, hoping to hide my face away. "You're a grown man crying over a film about toys," I chided myself. But oh, what a film; what toys.

The differences in point distribution are always one of my favorite parts of these rollouts. It's pretty nuts to this series of large point gaps...

15. 598.094
14. 658.367
13. 709.016
12. 758.776
11. 822.585

followed immediately by this incredibly small series of gaps...

11. 822.585
10. 822.735
9. 826.015

That's a 0.15 point gap between #11 and #10 after a 64 point gap between #12 and #11!

But otherwise, 12 Years a Slave is an absolute triumph. It is literal, clear, simple even, in the best sense. It shows you the book; it finds the images that it demands. You feel as though you are seeing slavery as it was for the first time. That in itself is a great achievement but it isn’t couched in such a way that you can deal with this film by saying that was there, that was then, we know what we think about that.

Instead, you go on Solomon’s journey yourself. It is as drastic as that.[

And that’s basically the entire plot: One big, long chase across the desert. What happens along the way is awesome, frightening, deeply strange and darkly funny, but it’s never less than jaw-dropping and it’s constantly surprising. A sequence that takes place entirely within a wall of swirling dirt and piercing lighting will leave you breathless; a quieter moment amid barren trees and blue moonlight provides an unshakable melancholy. The score from Tom Holkenborg (a.k.a. Junkie XL) provides just the right tone each time: propulsive here, introspective there.

"A Separation" provides a useful portrait of Iran today. Some inflamed American political rhetoric has portrayed it as a rogue nation eager to start nuclear war. All too many Americans, I fear, picture Iranians as camel-riding harem-keepers. Certainly some of Iran's punishments for adultery that we read about seem medieval. But this film portrays a more nuanced nation, and its decent characters are trying to do the right thing. To untangle right and wrong in this fascinating story is a moral challenge. I'd love to see the film with wise judges from American divorce courts and hear their decisions. Sometimes the law is not adequate to deal with human feelings.

Richard Linklater's Boyhood, both a fictional drama about growing up and a wonder-rousing cinema experiment, deserves all the accolades it has been receiving since its appearances at the Sundance and Berlin film festivals earlier this year. Presented in 143 scenes shot in 39 days over a dozen years with the same cast, the film explores that permeable border between drama and documentary in a way that evokes recognition, melancholy and joy, while sticking to the mundane experiences of one boy's life.

(It may seem, given the biggest fans having only four people included, that this film seems out of place this high up. However, there are nine voters in the 11-20 range, which means that more than half of all voters had this film in their top twenty)
I suggest you take a defibrillator to Whiplash, since the chances of a heart attack or spontaneous combustion during viewing are high. The indie film has become a phenomenon, exploding from a debut at the Sundance Film Festival to become an awards-season favourite (it has been nominated for a Best Picture Oscar) and it deserves a loud drumroll to announce its opening here. Indeed, Whiplash is entirely about jazz drumrolls and the battle of wills between two men over how, precisely, they should be played.

Moonlight is not only about what it's like to struggle with being gay in the entirely black suburbs of America, but what it is to be a man and social norms surrounding masculinity affect our relationship with sexuality. While the subject matter could make for an emotionally taxing watch, the dialogue is paved with hope: Barry Jenkins’ screenplay is beautiful in its simplicity, relying just as much on its stars' exceptional abilities to move the story along during moments of silence.

If it were up to me, The Social Network would have taken home all the awards back during the 2010 Awards Season. It’s the far superior film in my opinion. David Fincher might not be the first person one thinks of when telling the Facebook story but he goes above and beyond. Eisenberg gives it his all as the Facebook founder. But great films aren’t made without great scripts and Aaron Sorkin delivers one of his best scripts ever. Meanwhile, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross certainly deserve an Oscar for their score. It’s that good!

There are good films and then there are great films. The Social Network isn’t only a great film but it’s a classic for a new era in filmmaking.
-Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies

Many have already said this, but PARASITE is Bong Joon Ho’s masterpiece. All of his work prior to this has lent itself to the crafting of this well-rounded film. There is so much meaning to be found interwoven within the script that it is easy to say that the rewatchability factor is high. But there is not so much injected into the script that the viewer will get lost in translation while taking in everything that is happening onscreen. And while some have mentioned the dystopian feel the film carries, the subject matter is very current and of utmost importance to pay attention to. PARASITE is arguably one of the most relevant films of the year and, in closing, I encourage everyone to add the film to their viewing list ASAP! Within this film, like the majority of fairytales, resides a warning that we must hear.

Great rollout of a fascinating list. I'm sorry I didn't participate.

I was also initially surprised to see Whiplash so high; I love the film, but wasn't expecting it to be the 4th highest ranked for the entire decade. The more I think about it, though, the more I realize how hard it is to shake the film. And J.K. Simmons's performance as Fletcher may be the single finest piece of acting of the decade. One of the most deserved Academy Awards ever, for one of the most deserving actors.
