Films of the 2010s: 2010 (2022 Edition)

Post by BleuPanda »

Welcome to the first part of our poll covering films of the 2010s, our first time covering this decade in the series!

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the IMDb list and the top 15 of each year will go on to the final top 150 (plus a few bonus films). The deadline is September 30. New rounds will be posted on the 16th and first day of each month.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 45
3. 40
4. 36
5. 32
6. 28
7. 25
8. 22
9. 19
10. 16
11. 14
12. 13
13. 12
14. 11
15. 10
16. 9
17. 8
18. 7
19. 6
20. 5

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

Also, if anyone wants to actually run this, go ahead - I just wanted to make sure this got started. If I do end up the host, I want to be clear that I probably won't tabulate the results until the weekend after the deadline.

Additionally, I'm going to try using the point distribution currently being used in the yearly music polls - I think the old distribution favored the top spots a bit too much.

When I said I'd be doing the poll here (http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... =5&t=10342), I did mean it and I did not forget about it. I planned to start it in October, because September is incredibly busy for me.
I'll see if I can scrape up a list...

Uhh, is it alright if I run it for the first month then? Sorry, I didn't take your post in that thread as being a 100% commitment with the language used, and without knowing you planned to start in October I had no idea what was happening with this.

The only problem for me running this is that I probably won't have time to reliably calculate the results until the weekend after each deadline; so if you would be more timely, it might be best for you to run it.

Glad and surprised to see several members are showing love for 2 South Korean classics "I Saw The Devil" and "Poetry"! "I Saw The Devil" particularly is just a sublime horror thriller.

It's pretty bad but at least I knew beforehand some people liked it... way worse is 1 mention for The Last Airbender, I can't see a single quality for that movie, it's plain terrible from start to finish (and very rarely so bad it's good... expect the war cry, that one is hilarious, I completely lost it at the movies).

My list :

1. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
2. Toy Story 3
3. I Saw the Devil
4. Exit Through the Gift Shop
5. Winter's Bone
6. Four Lions
7. The Social Network
8. Tucker & Dale vs Evil
9. Black Swan
10. Easy A
11. Rubber
12. The Fighter

Unfortunately didn't get time to catch up on Poetry and Incendies.
I saw them a few days apart, so it was an interesting contrast between Winter's Bone (even when life is at its hardest, there is still beauty and hope) to I Saw the Devil (life is hell and there is nothing to save in it).

Surprisingly decent :
Predators, Karate Kid, Pirahna 3D

I guess that is the year that killed 3d movies right away, it made some scenes too dark to be watchable in Alice in Wonderland, looked terrible in Clash of the Titans (like 2d characters and monsters at different distances) and barely noticeable in The Last Airbender. In Pirahna 3D it was pretty gimmicky but at list a bit fun.

Funniest scene of the year :

There is always a chance Miguel simply listed everything he has seen from the year?

Well, I usually list the movies that I've seen from the year, and that I find them, at least, quite good.
And yes, the truth is that The Last Airbender is not a masterpiece, but I have to admit that I'm a (too) unconditional fan of Shyamalan.

As one of the lone dissenting opinions that Old is good actually, I can sympathise.

I read and heard some good reviews of Old, it's got a bit over 40% of positive reviews on Metacritic and only a handful of negative ones. I don't like Split, Signs or the Village but at least they are competently filmed and acted, the Last Airbender has no redeeming quality : the script is bad, most of the story is told by voiceover, most actors are terrible, all good characters have been whitewashed but the bad guys can be played by foreign actors, the action setpieces are bad and boring, the characters arcs don't make the slightest sense and they all take baffling decisions, the cinematography is ugly, it's humorless, the special effects are OK but often out of place (5 earth benders do some kind of choregraphed haka to... slowly move a fairly small boulder ???)...
I'll leave it to Roger Ebert : ""The Last Airbender" is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented. The laws of chance suggest that something should have gone right. Not here. It puts a nail in the coffin of low-rent 3D, but it will need a lot more coffins than that."

Thanks BleuPanda. Good results. Great to see so many participants.
Six years ago I was the only who voted for Poetry now it ended up in top 15. Uncle Boonmee, Certified Copy, Meek's Cutoff and I Saw the Devil did also much better this time. Carlos did much worse (and so did Another Year).
Despite the great results it is sad to see many of my biggest favorites just missed the final (Four Lions at #16, Exit Through the Gift Shop at #17, L'Illusionniste #21). I actually rewatched Exit Through the Gift Shop a month ago because there is a Banksy exhibition in Finland right now. The movie was just as enjoyable as it was in 2010 when I saw it in Berlinale.

The highest ranked movie I have not seen is Easy A. I will check it out.
