Animated Movie poll: Voting and discussion thread

Post by Petri »

I think it is time for an all time animated movies poll.

Before voting we can debate on some things.

Are short films eligible?
Many people who usually don’t watch short films have seen a lot of short animated films: old Disney and Looney Tunes movies, Pixar shorts, short films by Aardman Animations, acclaimed Soviet or Czechoslovakian shorts etc. However, I would say short films are ineligible. Some people will not vote them because they think it is impossible to compare a five minute short to two hours long feature animation or just because they don’t remember the names for every Daffy Duck film they have seen. I’m saying the short films would suffer and that’s why there should be an own poll for them.

What about movies with animation and real people or movies with animated segments?
The animation must be the main genre of the movie. So movies like Kill Bill vol. 1 or Mary Poppins won’t be eligible because there are only few minutes long animated parts in those movies. However movies like Waltz with Bashir or LEGO movie are eligible for sure.
I would like to hear your opinion about movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit or Alice (1988) by Jan Švankmajer. Back in the 1980s Roger Rabbit was definitely something else but nowadays in every other superhero or space opera movie has a crucial animated character, and those movies are definitely not animated movies. In Alice the main character is not animated but otherwise it is mostly stop motion animation and the movie is often considered as an animated movie. I don’t have a clear opinion about those two. If you have any other examples, please comment.

What about stop-motion, motion capture, clay, cutout animation etc.
They are all eligible if the movie is feature length.

The minimum length for the list is 20 movies. Please vote only movies you think are great or at least good. If you have seen less than 20 great feature length animated movies there are more than two months to watch more. TheI maximum length for the list is top 100. Of course you can send longer lists but I will count only the top 100.
I will decide the formula for the points later when I see how long lists people submits. I’m planning to use a stark formula in which #1 gets 100 points and #100 only few points (definitely not the one in which two #100 votes is more valuable than one #1 vote).

If you are voting for movies in which the original title is not in English please add the English title as well. So if you are voting for a movie released in 2001 directed by Hayao Miyazaki you can use the RYM way: 千と千尋の神隠し [Spirited Away] (2001), IMDb way: Spirited Away [Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi] or just write Spirited Away. If possible please add the release year and director after the title of the movie (to avoid obscurities).

The deadline is 31st of October.

If you have any questions. Please ask.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Alice can be eligible for me. Short films would be too much, although it's a pity for Wallace and Grommit. This will be a battle between Ghibli, Disney and Pixar.

About Roger Rabbit, Alice and other live-action animations:
I would say that live-action animation films are eligible. So if the movie is on this list and it is feature length it is eligible.

Excited for this! I plan on submitting a Top 100.

Questions about two specific movies:

1. The Congress has both animated and live-action sequences (I'm not sure of the proportion). The animation plays a central role in the plot and is quite possibly the most memorable part, so I would like to include this, if I may.

2. I'm not sure if Team America: World Police will end up on my list since it's rather far down on my first provisional list. I'm just not sure if it counts as animation and would like some clarification.

Thanks!

1. The Congress is a good question. I almost put it in the opening post instead of Waltz with Bashir but because of rather long (almost half of the movie I guess) non-animated part i wasn't sure would it count (and probably it won't be in my top 100 anyhow). Like you said the animation plays quite possibly the most memorable part so I would say it is eligible.

2. Team America. I think puppetry movies are eligible. I'm planning to vote for Meet the Feebles at least.

Here is my current list - though if we have another 2 months, I may try to squeeze in a few more if I think about it.

Either way, are mini-series allowed? Two made my list and I hope so, though I included another 2 in case you decide to exclude them (not having short films have let a few too many mid-tier Disney films sneak in, so I'm hoping not to add another 2 to the pile).

I was thinking not to vote for mini-series but after your question I thought it again. I would say they are allowed (and I'm going to vote for Paranoia Agent as well). I still think the affect to the final results (whether they are eligible or not) is small (I might be wrong on this one).

I haven't seen a single one of those ambiguities tv-movies but if they are feature length and not just extra long episodes of tv-shows I would say they are eligible.

I have rated about 230 feature length animation movies 6 or higher on IMDb. It's going to be fun and hard at same time to limit the list to top 100.

I hope I remember to edit my list at the end of the month - I've been watching a few more animated films for this project, though the only one to actually make my top 100 is Wolfwalkers, but it will land rather high.

I updated my list with Wolfwalkers and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie - I bolded them and listed them as .5 between the surrounding movies, but let me know if I need to update the numbers (if you have already added my list to a file, I figured it would be easier to just highlight the additions since I made no other changes)

It was easy to find the new movies and update your points in the spreadsheet. Thank you.

We have exceeded our dead line. Only ten people have voted (including ManPerson's top 10 list). I was hoping to see more lists. So if you are planning to vote please let me know so I can extend the voting time.

I wanted to vote -- I've seen well past 20 animated movies, but mostly from 10-30 years ago, so I'd only really have a top 10.

I guess it is ok to submit only a top 10 list but in that case I think it would be fine if the number one gets the points what #11 gets from longer list etc.

Thank's for the list Live in Phoenix. If someone else wants to vote now it's the last time to say it.
I start the countdown today evening (European time) or tomorrow.

Didn't think I'd have time to contribute to this, but the delay in deadline meant I could carve some out. Looked at my letterboxd and had about 60 titles graded an 8+/10, so did a quick ranking. Could have expanded to 7/10, but wanted to keep this stuff that I legitimately think is great.

1. Spirited Away (2001)
2. Wall-E (2008)
3. The Incredibles (2004)
4. Toy Story 2 (1999)
5. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
6. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
7. Pinocchio (1940)
8. Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
9. Ratatouille (2007)
10. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
