Speak for yourself! I just started reading and I approve including Hold On.

You are taking an innocent comment far too seriously!

I give this list my reluctant stamp of approval due to the inclusion of both "Feels Good" and "My Boo".

I’m pleased to see those two there, also at least a few songs I wouldn’t have imagined seeing on a Pitchfork list in a million years like Friends in Low Places. Also does anyone have plans to transcribe this or may I?

Who is this list made for? It appeals way less to core P4K readers than their last look at the 90s (which wasn't really that long ago), and are the mainstream music fans they are obviously trying to appeal to really going to start reading P4K?

I don't know if they are trying to "appeal" to someone or not, but I like the column on the general 90s series they are doing. The editor speaks to how it's worthwhile to do 'all time' lists every few years because as things change, we view things differently. I agree. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was seen as hugely influential in the 90s, but over time it has become less influential. Meanwhile the blueprint laid out in "Fantasy" and its remix (the #1 on the new list) has proven to still be relevant in the 2020s.

The albums list is out tomorrow.

So I'll start posting the list then, if there are no objections! (And I should've read the whole thing before I saw your comment, Fiona, but that's on me).

You could make that case as guitar rock certainly doesn't carry the weight it once did, but you could also make the case that the way Nirvana was able to take pop music and filter it through distorted noise is something that still happens in pop music to this day (through different processes, but still...). New artists like Billy Eilish still crop up and she has definitely stated Nevermind was a huge influence on her. Further, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is still hugely popular (I believe it's the most streamed song of the 90's on Spotify), whereas 'Fantasy' is arguably not quite as popular as it once was. And trends in music are always changing, so deciding what's best from a prior decade based on current music trends feels like a fool's errand (to me anyway, I know others disagree; I can respect that). These P4K lists appear to try to rewrite the decade in the image of their choosing. It comes across as contrived.

Sorry if that was a bit of a rant.

I think 'SLTS' had the most at one point. Anyway, both songs have over 1.4 billion streams ('Fantasy' is at a still respectable 230 million). I know Nevermind is the most streamed album of the 90's on Spotify.

I think that P4K is sending a message away from the indie that characterizes it to open up to more musical genres. The variety of genres can be said to be equitable showing more interest in R&B and Hip-Hop. Something to highlight from this list is the inclusion of women in the entire count.

They also mention they'll be doing deep dives into specific genres so be on the lookout for anything there.

Damn, "Show Me Love" in here too? It's like they read my mind and picked the exact 90s songs I thought were missing from AM for too long, what the hell.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was seen as hugely influential in the 90s, but over time it has become less influential. Meanwhile the blueprint laid out in "Fantasy" and its remix (the #1 on the new list) has proven to still be relevant in the 2020s.

The fantasy remix was clearly chosen because of its great influence on pop music, the song was responsible for popularizing the introduction of hip hop into pop music, and this type of formula is reproduced in pop music to this day, it's an extremely influential song .

Somehow after looking at #1 my eyes managed to deglaze and saw the classic "Fade Into You" in a good spot. But I feel like I trust Pitchfork less every time they make a list.

Hello users that only pop up for Pitchfork lists !
wiliop wrote: Tue Sep 27, 2022 10:08 pm I think that P4K is sending a message away from the indie that characterizes it to open up to more musical genres. The variety of genres can be said to be equitable showing more interest in R&B and Hip-Hop. Something to highlight from this list is the inclusion of women in the entire count.
I think they did that better circa 2010, their 2000s list mixes all kinds of genres very well and was almost (metal was lacking) as broad as could be.
Now they pushed too far in the other direction imo, safe for the fantastic inclusion of Carry the Zero fairly high, it ignores a vast swat of 90s indie they used to champion (not one In the Aeroplane Over the Sea song ? Spiderland ? The Lonesome Crowded West ? Anything by Spiritualized or Primal Scream ?)
I don't object to the inclusion of pop, female and black songs that used to be overlooked, but I don't think that's a reason to forget everything else
I actually think Fantasy, Pony and Say My Name rank way too low in AM, so that's the kind of songs I'm happy to see rank high (maybe too high here but ok), but do we need Always Be My Baby and One in a Million in the top 50 too, couldn't they find different styles to be represented instead ?

Treblezine recent best of the 00s songs was way better a covering the whole range of music and I hope they will tackle the 90s soon

At the very least, it’s possible ITAOTS and the rest that were left out here will be better represented on the albums list, even if they end up lacing below multiple Mariah albums and Britney’s debut or something. We’ll just have to see. I won’t argue that the whole thing doesn’t feel a least a little contrived, even if the songs themselves are great.

It took me a minute to realize what ITAOTS stood for...until I looked closer, I thought, "But Nation of Millions came out in the '80s..."

Um "Fantasy" was used heavily in Free Guy this year. Latto's worldwide hit "Big Energy" is essentially based on "Fantasy" (to the point Latto brought Mariah on for the remix that sent the song into the top 10). Kylie Jenner launched her new perfume by using "Fantasy" in the commercial. "Fantasy" is as popular as ever.

Although, relating to this, Nick should be chuffed to know that his Cardi B rant is still fondly(?) remembered on r/indieheads 5 years later.

Hahaha I saw someone quoting that copypasta on the indieheads thread. Yes, I am very pleased my deranged 1 am rant that I wrote back in 2017 is still getting attention all these years later. If this is my lasting internet legacy, so be it.
StevieFan13 wrote: Wed Sep 28, 2022 12:53 pm Remind me again which rant?
Back when Pitchfork gave "Bodak Yellow" the SOTY in 2017 I wrote a lengthy comment on the indieheads subreddit decrying the choice. The comment started off with the phrase "so this is what it's come down to, huh?", which still gets quoted time to time whenever someone on the subreddit feels a list made some poor decision or another.

“Gold Soundz” was always a ridiculous #1. I guess its #40 spot represents what's left of the staff's old guard. But two drastically different lists doesn't really make either one look good.

Despite its chart success, if there's a song I'm most surprised that hasn't been included in many critics in the 90s (heck not even in the bubbling under 10,000 songs) it's "Get Ready For This" by 2 Unlimited.

I don't have any article or evidence to back this up but "Get Ready For This" is that song that instantly screams "This has 90s written all over it" and by far has one of the most iconic riff in music history. You've heard that recognizable riff heavily somewhere, whether in films, sports events, radio, clubs or CD compilations. It's like the rave / dance version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Gangsta's Paradise" - all it takes is one listen.

That’s correct. You just need to remove the blanks around the url to get rid of the spotifyplaylist brackets.

The internet is a shockingly small world I guess (and the part of the internet devoted to analyzing (read: “complaining about”) music lists is therefore even smaller).

If this list was called best and left it at that, I’d be a bit disappointed some choices but wouldn’t argue (as that is purely subjective.

However, to then lead the article with:

“The tracks that defined the ’90s, …”

Makes this look very revisionist.

Re: Pitchfork 250 best songs of the 1990s

I’ve finally listened to both the original and remix of Fantasy and I’ve come to the conclusion that Pitchfork was bang-on. I honestly agree with choosing it way more than choosing Gold Soundz, much as I love that song too.

I commented on the other Pitchfork thread that I much prefer Pitchfork's readers' polls to their official lists (especially in recent years). I had listened to their '90s and 2010s readers' polls, and now I went back and listened to all the ones for individual years I hadn't heard before (2007-2021). I think that's all of them? (If not, I want more!)

There are about 25 songs I'd never heard that I'll add to my top 10,000, and 2 really stand out: All Delighted People by Sufjan Stevens from 2010 and Kill Me by Indigo De Souza from last year. Neither of them made Pitchfork's top 100 of their respective years. I know it was from an EP, but I'm still surprised All Delighted People has flown so under the radar for such a beloved artist. I think it's one of his better songs.

By the way, the poll of this year is open :)
