Slant Magazine: The Best Rock Albums Of The 90s

Post by Cicice »

Slant Magazine: The Best Rock Albums Of The 90s: https://www.slantmagazine.com/features/ ... f-the-90s/

Boy, I love a 90s lists! Just by coincidence, I found this list whilst listening to "Bring You My Love" shortly after, well ok maybe not "Exile In Guyville" but "GirlySound" (which is quite Guyville-ish if it contains some bootlegs song that will feature in that album, right?) and to my chuffed surprise, both PJ and Liz featured highly next together. Also, I can instantly admit that I enjoyed GirlySound a lot better than Guyville and Whip-Smart is quite underappreciated.

Lastly, one curious question for everyone who sees this list, I could ask about "Out Of Time" or "Mellow Gold" but I'm gonna ask about "Rid Of Me": How has "Rid Of Me" never entered the the Top 300 of All Time yet? I see this album make it on greatest album list so frequently whether its placed highly or not, I swear I see it appear on album lists way more than "Live Through This", "69 Love Songs" and "Agaetis Byrjun" and "Ladies & Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space" and all these albums has been a Top 240 before. It is PJ's 4th most acclaimed after "Let England Shake", "Bring You My Love" & "Stories From The City" but based on how many times I see a PJ album on a greatest album list, I would have assumed "Rid Of Me" was PJ's #1. I rarely ever see "Dry" anymore, how is that album still on a close battle with "Little Earthquakes"?

Slant Magazine - The 20 Best Trip Hop Albums Of All Time: https://www.slantmagazine.com/lists/the ... ll-time/2/

There hasn't been many best electronic album list lately and if there had been, there certainly hasn't been many involving "Trip Hop", one of the most beautiful genre next to Orchestral and Psychedelics, "Inside My Mind (Blue Skies) by Groove Armada is cloud-view gorgeous! There's even been more Dream Pop, Drone and Shoegaze lists than Trip Hop, check with Treble.

I am familiar and unfamiliar with half of these lists, so I guarantee I would check out the unfamiliar. Each album covers, particularly Hooverphonic and DJ Krush are already giving me goosebumps whilst I've heard a few songs from Smith & Mighty, Smoke City and Nightmares On Wax on an early Hed Kandi "Winter Chill" or "Serve Chilled" compilation.

The one downside about this list is that 20 is too short for a genre that gets talked about but rarely has a list compiled by that genre, even if I heard that Trip Hop may still be around but sort of died after the 90s. I would have at least expand the list to 30. Throw in some albums like Aim's "Hinterland", Afterlife's "Electrosensitive" (along with "Simplicity 2000"), Fenomenon's "Pacific Memories: The Early Tapes", Urban Dwellers' "Shop Worn Angel", Bent's "Programmed To Love", Portishead's "Third", Royksopp's "Melody A.M" or even Sade's "Love Deluxe" etc. The list got it right with including "Becoming X" (the dirty rave sister to "Garbage") and "Lamb" (which should have been at least almost half as impactful as "Timeless", "Maxinquaye" and "Psyence Fiction").

1. Portishead - Dummy (1994)
2. DJ Shadow - Entroducing (1996)
3. Massive Attack - Blue Lines (1991)
4. Tricky - Maxinquaye (1995)
5. Massive Attack - Mezzanine (1998)
6. Portishead - Portishead (1997)
7. Smith & Mighty - Bass Is Maternal (1995)
8. Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X (1996)
9. Unkle - Psyence Fiction (1998)
10. Lamb - Lamb (1996)
11. Mono - Formica Blues (1997)
12. David Holmes - Let's Get Killed (1997)
13. DJ Cam - Substances (1996)
14. Kid Loco - A Grand Love Story (1997)
15. Attica Blues - Attica Blues (1997)
16. Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain (2000)
17. Hooverphonic - A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular (1996)
18. Nightmares On Wax - Smokers Delight (1995)
19. DJ Krush - Krush (1994)
20. Smoke City - Flying Away (1997)

There is some fluff on that list that could have been replaced by the likes of Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, Deserter's Songs, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, Dirt, Rust in Peace, etc. But not terrible.

It looks close to the Acclaim Music's Top Ranked 1990s Albums. Still, I love albums from the 90s, even if this list is not the most interesting list I've seen, I can't find the need to can't complain: PJ, Pavement, Radiohead, Breeders, Liz and Hole. It's a pity it misses Ladies & Gentlemen, Deserter's Songs, Pod, Millions Now Living Will Never Die etc.. but sadly there's only so much you could fit in just 50. The Trip Hop list has it harder with just 20... 20! Trip Hop?
