I hate to be a bit cynical here, but I suspect that if Toxic were sung by any other artist, it would be easily in the top 50.
I might actually think the opposite - a few inclusions here make it clear they are appealing to recent news events, so all the focus on Britney Spears recently probably helped.
Quite possibly! I just wonder if she wasn’t underrated from the start. It seems critics have only very recently warmed to her pop music contributions, having spent most of the 00s begrudging that she embodied everything that was wrong with the industry. Had Toxic been released by an indie artist, I wonder if it wouldn’t have topped every year-end list, swept the Grammys, etc. It’s just such a well-crafted pop song. But I do think recent news has spurred something of a reevaluation, so it will be interesting to see where it goes from here!

For example, most Jay-Z fans would not put “99 Problems” even close to the top of a list of their favorites (it’s a great song, just not that beloved if you’re a bigger fan of his. If you look at lists specifically ranking Jay-Z songs, it’s never on top). And this applies to lots of others artists as well…
I will say as a fan of both The Smiths and The Cure, their picks for their respective highest-ranked songs line up pretty well with what most fans would say (There is a Light That Never Goes Out and Just Like Heaven, respectively). R.E.M.'s highest being Losing My Religion might be different. I love R.E.M. but I couldn't tell you what the consensus pick for fans' favorite song by them is (Radio Free Europe? So. Central Rain? Driver 8?).
On The Smiths I'd agree, but for The Cure, I think Just Like Heaven is definitely the populist pick and fans would go for A Forest or Pictures of You. I agreed with the point the picks for many of the artists felt off - the only Wilco song being Heavy Metal Drummer is one example.

Indie rock of the 90s/00s/10s getting almost entirely ignored perhaps isn't surprising after their albums list, but it's a huge omission. There's a fair point to be made that many recent critics have overrated indie rock relative to other genres, but simply erasing them isn't a good option, especially with the many dubious picks they made instead for recent years.

Is the Jorge Ben song (which is a great pick btw) the only non English or Spanish song on here?

Bam Bam is in Jamaican patois so not quite British or American English but I think that's all (Trans Europe Express is originally in german if we want to be leniant)

Gasolina is in Spanish. I think the Bad Bunny song is too, as is a significant portion of I Like It. Ironically, they picked a BTS song in English rather than Korean.

I think that's just part of the larger "poptimist" trend that's been occuring the last few years. Critics are rating songs/abums that populate the mainstream radio more positively, on the same level or even above the level of songs/albums that traditionally dominate lists like these. For example, if a song like Bad Guy came out not even 15 years ago, it wouldn't be at or near the top of everyone's EOY lists (or in the top 200 all time) like it is now.

Even then, "Toxic" has always been highly touted, regardless of whatever is happening with Britney in the news. I agree that the the perceptions of an artist at the time can really influence a list (I think "Billie Jean" would be top 30 if the claims about Jackson somehow never came out), but I don't think it's the biggest reason for "Toxic" being this high.

Probably, my opinion is minority but the Top 500 have lots of similarities with the AM Top 500 more than the original list of 2004

OK, hot take time, as I had moments of great love for the list (especially in the upper reaches) and other moments of great frustration. I will just vent frustration!

In no real order...

FIRST, as a proud gen-x'r, the list almost feels like it was made for a combo of boomers and millennials. To wit, it's as if all the most important developments of the late 80's/early 90's were ignored (with a few exceptions). Note, I don't even necessarily love all of this, but the omissions stood out...

- Grunge got only Smells Like Teen Spirit, one other very low Nirvana song, one by Pearl Jam, one by Soundgarden, and one by Hole. No Alice in Chains, no Smashing Pumpkins(!), and only "Loser" by Beck (I know, not grunge, but same period/ethos)
- Britpop is represented by Wonderwall and Common People in the Top 100...and that's about it. No Blur, no Verve, no Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Portishead, MBV, "There She Goes", etc.
- The Golden Era of Hip-Hop is surprisingly unrepresented...just one track apiece for Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, Wu-Tang Clan, Run-DMC and 2Pac. (NWA, PE, and Biggie got two apiece, I'll grant them that.) No Nas(!), De La Soul, or Roots. Weirdly, even the recent titans got little mention -- yes, Kanye, Jay-Z, and Kendrick each got a track in the Top 100, but nothing else except Stronger at 500 and Jay-Z's appearance on Crazy in Love. Meanwhile, Drake gets 3 songs?
- Bjork's omission already mentioned, though getting consensus on 1 top track for her is tougher

Other stuff...

Almost no electronica at all (just the one Kraftwerk song)

Daddy Yankee at 50 was a shock, but otherwise music in other languages is just touched on:
- one Jorge Ben track, nothing else from Brazil ignoring Tropicalia altogether
- no older Spanish music, like Buena Vista Social Club, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon (or even acclaimed recent folks like Rosalia or Natalia Lafourcade)
- no African music AT ALL (not even Fela)
- no French or francophone songs
- nothing from Germany but the aforementioned Kraftwerk (granted a lot of the 70s stuff is album-oriented)

Jazz got a couple tokens in the lower reaches for Miles & Coltrane, but if you're doing that how do you entirely leave out Louis Armstrong (his jazz stuff, not "What a Wonderful World"), Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, "Time Out", "Sing Sing Sing", Herbie Hancock, Monk, Mingus, etc.?

Blues also suffered from tokenism ... no BB King? He would be in the RS wheelhouse.

No standards at all, not even Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald (I think "Strange Fruit" no longer fits in either standards or jazz, it's like a standalone thing)

No Everly Brothers, Jackie Wilson or Sam & Dave at all was a bit of a shock. The whole million dollar quartet got hit a bit...none of the older Elvis recordings, no "Folsom Prison Blues" or (surprisingly) "Hurt", no Carl Perkins at all, just one Jerry Lee Lewis at this point.

80s one-hit wonders seemed missed...I was surprised to not see at least one of "Take on Me," "Come on Eileen," "Tainted Love," or "Don't You Want Me." I suppose we got "Africa"?

Prog, unsurprisingly, got completely ignored, with the exception surprisingly of Rush (and "LImelight" at that!) No Yes, no Genesis, certainly no King Crimson, not even "Nights in White Satin". Not even rock-y takes like Deep Purple or Jethro Tull made it. Even Floyd only got 2, and nothing from DSOTM.

I predicted exactly the 3 tracks apiece representing The Who and Led Zeppelin, which was a bit of a bummer.

Interesting to see some classic rock artists I never thought would start to disappear...just one Clapton track (Layla, and no Cream or Yardbirds), just one Van Morrison (and very low...bad political opinions from him and Eric I guess?), just one Elvis Costello, no Dire Straits, no Janis Joplin, no "American Pie", no ELO. And just one track apiece by The Doors and Eagles, right next to each other. Not that I necessarily mind, but notable.

No post-punk at all, no XTC, not a single track by Tom Waits. Also, just venting that neither "Living for the City" nor anything from Songs in the Key of Life is here...sad, and weird.

Finally, the huge lack of recent indie feels like an intentional take on being in opposition to Pitchfork. Which is dumb. They also missed an opportunity to include anything by all the highly acclaimed female songwriters of recent years.

That said, it's a lot, and probably not room for all of it. Which is why, IMO, 500 is no longer enough.

I agree with that last bit, should expand the list and the amount of people who submit to it. I don't know why it's a super selective group of 200 people.

It’s especially odd to not have anything from Songs in the Key of Life after they ranked it so high on the album list.

I'm really not a fan of how they are acting like this is the first revision in 17 years. Are they pretending the 2010 version doesn't exist? Seems rather Orwellian.

Overall, a list of surprises. Some welcome some...odd. I'm struggling to comprehend how "Gasolina" is the 50th greatest song. Or why "Alive" and "Pancho and Lefty" are so low. But oh well.

Wonder if California Dreamin ranked relatively low cause of all those annoying slowed down versions you see in commercials and in movies. That slowed down versions of big pop and rock hits in commercials trend is so overused especially a raspy voiced female songwriter covering them. California Dreaming has to take the cake for most (SLOWED DOWN) covered.

Gasolina actually is from 2004, not 2010. But it's a mistake of RS.

Looking at the list sorted by year, it's almost like they are going out if their way to avoid any music that's not pop, rap, or R&B since the early 90s. The most recent song that could be classified as indie rock is All My Friends from 2007, and if you think that song is more electronic then it's Maps from 2003. Sonofsam summed it up perfectly, it's like this weird combination of boomer and millennial tastes. It really seems geared to reinforce the tastes of more casual music fans than to promote any sort of discovery.

Random music point, but doesn't the instrumental lick on "Safaera" sound uncomfortably close to the lick on "Get Ur Freak On"?

Yeah Rolling Stone also lists "Royals" as being released in 2011, when it's really 2013.

We only had Respect at #51?? For once, I have to give more credit to Rolling Stone.

Also interesting how they more or less keep the "representative song from a famous album" idea from previous lists (save for a few like American Beauty and Blue), only they switch around which songs do the job (Adore instead of the title track for Sign o' the Times, Karma Police instead of Paranoid Android for OK Computer).

I do like the pick of "Nightswimming" from Automatic for the People instead of the safe picks like "Everybody Hurts" or "Man on the Moon."

It's funny that in some ways our 2018 list was more classic rock oriented than RS's. Look at the placements for Stairway, Hotel California, Light My Fire, Layla, etc. As much as I criticized their list in other posts, I do give them credit for diversifying a bit at the top, especially with a lot more hip-hop / R&B picks than we typically have on the forum, even if I disagree with a lot of their specific choices.

I could be wrong, but I think there was an early demo. Or at least, Lorde wrote the song much earlier.

Saying Gasolina came out in 2010 is objectively incorrect though.

Wikipedia says it was released independently and recorded in 2012, not seeing anything that says 2011 though.

Just casually scrolling through the list I've noticed a few years that are off. We've already mentioned "Royals" and "Gasolina", but "Super Bass" is off (RS says 2010, it really came out in 2011), "Uptown Funk" is off (RS says 2015, real life says 2014), "Paper Planes" is off (2008 is RS vs. 2007 in reality), "Common People" is off (1996 vs. 1995). I'm sure if I kept going I could find a few more too. This would be totally understandable if this list were published by some random person, but coming from Rolling Stone these sort of errors are kind of embarrassing. They really should've had a few interns go over the release years a bit more carefully before publishing the list.

I think both this and the Album lists from RS this year have been a huge disappointment. For me it feels like the last two movements BLM and #metoo, and the fact that the 2004 and 2012 lists have been criticized for being to old white male influenced have been like a wet blanket on every selection and placement. I've also criticized the old lists for the lacking of e.g. Rap music and I love some of the additions but every single position here feels political. "We need to place an African american on top on both lists, preferably a man in one and a woman in the other one. "Not saying anyone of them doesn't deserve it. Both WGO and Respect are great and maybe they deserves to be on the number one spot I just feel they're put there for the wrong reasons.

While the old lists, with all it's flaws, felt more like. No matter what's going on today, and what's hip this week, this top 500 will be as solid now as in 50 years, some new songs will enter the list and of course that means that some of the song will have to leave. This version feels more like, what's popular today. Dreams had a resurrection on Tiktok. Let's move it in from not even being in the top 500 straight in to the top 10. In 20 years when Tiktoks not longer the flavour of the month the song will probably be out of the top 500 again.

Maybe I'm just an old white grumpy male. But RS have always felt like the mother of these old time lists and I'm just disappointed with both the album and the songs lists. Just want to clarify that I didn't totally agree with the old lists either and would say that the 2021 editions are maybe more similar to some of my personal taste in music.

Do you honestly believe they placed What’s Going On and Respect at #1 because the artists are black? It seemed pretty clear to me they topped their respective lists because they’re not just great but their themes are as potent today as when they were originally released, which is as valid a reason as any to have them top the lists. It’s also pretty pointless to try and compare this iteration of the list with previous versions, there was clearly an attempt to be more inclusive with who got to vote on this version.

Also fwiw everybody in my life, myself included, considers Dreams one of the greatest songs songs ever. Don’t see why it connecting with younger demographics nearly 50 yrs removed from its release is not considered a valid reason for a high placement. Plus, it’s not like it wasn’t an acclaimed song before now

To your first question, I don't know. Just feels a bit to convenient, espacially after BLM. Still I love the song and the album and I have no problem what so ever with both of them being that high. And even though i Love Public Enemy and listen to a lot of rap music and I felt that they were not acclaimed enough in previous versions, for me it feels wrong that Fight the Power is a greater song than anything The Beatles ever made. I can't agree that Missy Elliott, no matter how much I like her is placed higher than any Beach Boys song, any David Bowie song.

What I did like with the old editions were that they moved slow. 8-9 years after the first editions, you have a bunch of songs moving out, and a bunch of additions not considering whats hip for the time being but what will last. This list took a step away from that slow and solid evolution.

About Dreams I always felt that it should have been in the earlier editions, you are correct its a great song. But I don't agree that with just beacause its connecting with a new demographic doesn't mean that the song gets better than it was. Journeys Don't Stop Believen had a hugh revival. That shouldn't move in into top 10 only because it can connect in different decades. Of course a song can evolve and be a huge inspiration for musicians and artist to come, like Kraftwerk and the rap from the 80's for example. Making a song, that didn't have a huge impact on its release, growing in time. Dreams differ though, because it isn't bigger today than it was when first released, just got a second coming. Many songs have done that through out the time but with Dreams it was more recent and that's my objection. This edition of the list feels more about whats popular now than whats quality throughout modern music history.

I gotta say I don’t understand people complaining about this list being “what’s popular today.” Yeah, it is. That’s kind of the point. I don’t care what songs were important in 1973 or whatever, this is a list from 2021, showing us the best songs as of 2021.

I think that’s what differ in the opinions. For me I think the 2004 and 2012 editions of RS list wasn’t what’s best of those years, except the really weird inclusion of the U2 new line on the horizon or whatever it was called. If you look back at those list they were more timeless while this list will be really outdated in the future. That’s fine of course, I just think it’s sad that RS didn’t continue with the types of best of all time lists that they started out with. Now it feels more like NME when Smells Like Teen Spirit is the greatest song ever recorded but not the best of the 90’s 😬

Arsalan, thanks for saying that. I misspoke (or mis-typed I guess). I agree with you. When I said popular, what I meant was "considered great." I want the list telling me what is "considered great" in 2021, as opposed to "considered great" throughout history.

Fair enough. I want what is consider great throughout history, not 2021. That’s maybe why some people like the list and some don’t.

For me if they want to put out what’s considered great right now. They should update the list every year instead of once per decade.

It took a week of slowly going through the list (because of a very busy week at work), but now I'm finally done. I really avoided every news of this I could, so as to remain unspoiled - although I did see the top 10 already. It was actually fun going through this list. The 2004/2010 version always seemed rather rigid, with a little too much emphasis on classic rock and early R&B. This new list really felt like an overhaul.

Going through the list in such a slow way made me really appreciate the attempt, if not always the execution of spreading the love around. Of course some artist would always get more songs than others, but you can really see them trying to give at least one song to a great variety of artists. Like hard rock artists that perhaps are no longer completely fashionable: Alice Cooper, Kiss, Aerosmith, Motörhead. Some alternative indie acts that are not necessarily mainstream enough for a list like this: Pavement, PJ Harvey, X-Ray Spex, The Breeders, Wilco, Liz Phair. Previously derided, popular favorites: Rush, Journey, Toto, The Doobie Brothers, Bon Jovi. Artists that seem to be randomly selected: William DeVaughn, Sister Nancy, Eric Church, Steely Pulse, Rilo Kiley. Some obvious pandering to younger generations (not meant to discredit the songs/ artists in general): BTS, Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny. The mixed along the usual suspects (many of which inevitably lost songs in the process) makes the list an unpredictable experience. They also did not always go with the expected songs, which added to the fun. Some of the songs and even artists that were removed were shocking as well (Janis Joplin especially!).

I'm not sure how I feel about the list overall, but at least you could see they really tried to appeal to everyone, at least from a mainstream point of view. Which also translates to a "screw you jazz, blues and anything not sung in English and maybe Spanish" (because Spanish is the only foreign language for many Americans, I feel). I never expected this not to be a mainstream list. I also have a personal preference for more deep-dive lists. But I can appreciate this list for what it is.

As for the more realistic negatives ('realistic' as in understanding what this list tries to represent):
- The complete disregard for 2000's indie music, which was not always the case and comes from nowhere. It seems very conscious though. Just look at Arcade Fire alone. They were really touted by Rolling Stone in the past, but with Funeral at #500 on their album list and no songs ranked it is clear that Rolling Stone wants to make a statement about that band. Heck I know why though. And it really seems to affect indies from the zeroes as a whole.
- In continuation of that it is notable, as sonofsamiam already pointed out that indeed the list seems to cater to millennials and boomers. The boomers are of course the people who probably still read Rolling Stone the most, so it is to be expected that their tastes are well reflected (plus many of these songs are evergreens anyway). I also have no problem with a solid representation of the 2010s or even poptimism. But the list now seems oddly slanted towards the ages minus 25 and 55 plus. I feel the tastes of people aged 25 to 55 might miss some of the heroes of their time.
- For some reason I thought Rolling Stone would finally have caught onto the remaining and actually rising popularity of Nick Cave and gave him one song. Perhaps it's weird that his snub almost stands out to me as much as those of Arcade Fire and Janis Joplin.
- I wish I had the feeling they really took the Sight & Sound approach. I know they asked input of many artists and critics, but I don't believe anyone thinks this is list is an aggregate. It feels to curated still for that.
- I read all the write-ups, but that is hardly worth it. They barely talk about why a song is great, but prefer to focus on a piece of trivia or some Billboard stats. The weirdest is the piece about Get Up, Stand Up which contains no positivity at all, but decides to share with us why Peter Tosh dislikes his own contribution. There is practically no passion in the writing to be found.
- Part of me wished that while they were being this bonkers they would have kept Moment of Surrender by U2 just to spite the naysayers. Or even better: a track of their Songs of Innocence at #1. That'll teach them!

Even with all that in mind, I kind of like the list. Not so much for the selected titles or their ranking, but for what it tries and almost succeeds in doing. It could have been much worse. And it has been.

Oh wait, they dropped my personal #1, Simon & Garfunkel's The Boxer, despite ranking it in the two previous versions. The list is trash!

You'd think Red Right Hand would make it, but nope. Also, no Aphex Twin is equally goofy.

I don't know, Aphex Twin is the kind of artist I never expect to find on a Rolling Stone song list. There is no interest in electronic or ambient music to be found.

I never expected Aphex Twin either and am pretty fine with Windowlicker, which I suppose is the song that might have been included, is missing. But there's so much weird absence from this edition that it doesn't feel that serious to me, to be honest. Which is disappointing to me.
  • Massive Attack - Teardrop or maybe even more so Unfinished Sympathy.
  • Jay Z - Empire State of Mind is maybe one of the most recognizable songs of the 00's. Both acclaimed and popular.
  • Blur - Song 2, Universal, Girls & Boys, Parklife, End of a Century, Think Tank. Just have at least one. NME managed to get 13 in their top 500.
  • Portishead - Glory Box, feels like a song that would have deserved a spot
  • Arctic Monkeys - Totally left out, I could have picked a bunch from their debut, sophmore or AM.
  • Arcade Fire - Not the biggest Arcade Fire fan, actually think they are a bit overrated but not even I would have missed out on Rebellion (Lies).
  • Underworld - Born Slippy One of the greatest electronic tracks of all time.
  • Nick Cave - Into My Arms
  • Daft Punk - One More Time, Around the World, Digital Love might be some of the most influential tracks from the last 25 years, especially on the whole EDM-scene that has topped the charts around the world for the last decade.
  • Lana Del Rey - Video Games instead of Summertime Sadness
  • Midnight City - M83 speaks for itself
  • Stone Roses - Fools Gold
  • The Beach Boys - Only three tracks included? One of the biggest band of all time. In my Room, Don't Worry Baby, Surf's Up, California Girls I could make this list three times as long. Here they have the same amount of tracks as Missy Elliott, though her songs are ranked higher.
  • Same thing goes for Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson with three additions each. :angry-banghead:
  • The Righteous Brothers - Leaving out You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' is just sad, sad.
  • MGMT - Time to Pretendwas in the last list and could have stayed. I can see how you would want to include Kids or Electric Feel instead.
  • The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio or any of their other acclaimed tracks.

I think I prefer their 500 album update than this update.

Great seeing "Cannonball", "212", "Fade Into You", "Paper Bag", "Divorce Song", "Rid Of Me", "I Only Have Eyes For You" and "Gloria".

I honestly do not understand the high praise for Billie Eilish, especially on an All Time list. Her songs and debut album isn't even that great. Songs like Girls Aloud's "Biology", Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" or Arianne's "Komm Susser Todd (Come Sweet Death)" offers better transition twist and progressive composition than "Bad Guy".

I don't know why "Summertime Sadness" was selected over the wonderful "Video Games", other than the fact that it's more it marks Lana's biggest commercial hit (due to the Cedric Gervais remix - which I prefer over the original). There's better Lana songs to pick such as "Mermaid Hotel", "Radio" or "Shades Of Cool".

I'm a bit concern for the usual Kate Bush inclusion. Yes, it's great seeing "Running Up That Hill" ranked high, but Kate is way more than just "Wuthering Heights", "Running Up That Hill", "This Woman's Work" and ""The Man With The Child In His Eyes". She has deeper rewarding cuts likes "Deeper Understanding", "The Coral Room", "Snowflake" and "Moments Of Pleasure (Director Cut's version)". Same goes to Robyn, she's more than "Dancing On My Own", she's got "Monument", "Roll With Me" and "Between The Lines", sometimes she's a step ahead of Britney Spears' artistry. Guarantee when Robyn dies, the free will content of "Monument" will be the sound of her (and Royksopp's) farewell to fans and critics and it'll be greeted with tremendous acclaim - heck it already sounds like a timeless future classic.

Overall, this list is nothing interesting to me. :(

Like Rob I decided to read through the whole list rather than have it spoiled for me, though I have to say most of the surprises weren't great. In general it's definitely a step in the right direction compared to the stodgy old lists but some of the list seems curated in all the worst ways, like some of the inclusions and their placements were just obligatory.

I know they had a large panel of big music industry names contributing to the list but were "Royals," "Take Care," and "Yeah" really THAT high on a lot of people's lists? I mean I won't presume to know what the process ultimately looked like so who knows, but for some reason reading through this list vs. the album list last year gave me more of an impression that their hearts weren't into a lot of the choices (which, as Rob also points out, the write-ups seemed strangely clinical and distant this time around).

On top of that, as many others have already mentioned, where are The National, Arcade Fire, or Vampire Weekend? It's hard for me to believe that none of those 2000's bands showed up on anyone's lists when I know for a fact that some of the musicians contributing to this are quite vocal about their affection for those bands and others. It really does feel like they're making a statement which seems like a bizarre overcorrection for artists that RS previously wrote a lot of praise over the last two decades.

I will say though that like RS said with their album list, tastes change. I'm ready to admit that all of my speculation is BS and everyone's tastes really have changed significantly more than I expected. It just felt like with the album list (which I actually liked quite a bit) was a deliberate re-canonization of genre and modern classics that the magazine had inexplicably been ignoring previously. Maybe it's just aligned closer to my tastes, but I didn't bat an eye when Lemonade, 36 Chambers, Rumours, Illmatic, or Master of Puppets all suddenly jumped into the top 100 because all of those have had deep significance to millions of people, so their inclusion was due.

Also I know it's all subjective but I think excluding "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" from the entire list is objectively an injustice.

Drake and Ariana Grande don’t belong on that list, mate. All of them are way better than Beach House or Muse anyway.

Some interesting analysis in the previous posts already, especially Rob's.

I think it leads to a big question, how would you define a "good" list, or at least the kind of lists you like ?
My favorite lists are those that paint a fairly complete panorama of the genre or era they are trying to cover. The Pitchfork 500 is still my favorite list ever because I feel it paints a pretty broad picture of the evolution of music between 77 and 2007 in the UK and the US (with some foreign stuff included but mostly through how they influenced North America and the UK). The write-ups and the sequencing of the list really reflected that intention to tell the story of popular music during those years more than to try to list the actual 500 best songs of those years, and that make some very glaring omissions more understandable. The 2 most striking ones were Love Will Tears Us Apart and 99 Problems, 2 songs that Pitchfork clearly adored back then (and probably still do), but on the Jay-Z side tracks produced by Kanye West and Timbaland probably reflected more their era than a least representative Rick Rubin produced one, and Disorder and Atmosphere might be more characteristics of Joy Division sound, or at least it made sense in the flow of the book.
That's also why I really like the recent top 150 songs of the 2000s by Treble, it covers more ground than most lists of the period (even the original Pitchfork one that was already quite adventurous), and while I think the top 50 or so is where the website truly considers the best 50 songs of the decade (and even then, I wouldn't be surprised if Fennesz or Grouper got pushed higher as peak representation of subgenres) but the 100 to 150 section seems clearly taylored to cover (sub)genres and sounds that would have otherwise not been showcased at all... and don't get me wrong, those are killer tracks, but that could have been left behind for more standard picks.
It doesn't hurt that I actually love a lot of the songs from those 2 lists of course.

So based on that, I think this new RS list is an improvement, call it pandering if you want but I like that it covers more ground than usual and that it's not stuck on classic rock, especially from the 80s on. But the (almost) total lack of britpop, hardcore punk, metal by not Metallica, post 1995 indie rock, triphop and electronic music is really a drag.
No triphop and electronic music I could almost understand, the same way I am not shocked when lists exclude jazz or world music, if there was a statement of "we only focused on rap, soul, rock and pop", but the other omissions don't make sense, rock didn't disappear after Seven Nation Army and Mr Bright Side.

I agree with both of these statements. I didn't read all of the write-ups, but the ones I read were pretty bland. Why not let the voters each get to write one or two blurbs for songs they voted for? I'd much rather read why The Edge or El-P voted for a song than the nonsense that many songs had for their write-ups.

That list is in my opinion shockingly absurd.
I thought an aggregate list was :
- bringing hundreds of musicians, industry people and critics
- asking all of them their top 50 all time
- Optional : Give more weights to the rankings by people who can prove they're knowledgeable in most decades and most genres of popular music.
- Transform their lists into points (ex : give 50 points for a number 1, 1 point for a number 50, or maybe something more logarithmic)
- Add all the weighted personal lists
- You have your aggregate

This 2021 list seems to be a curated list, based on what a ranking should look like in 2021 according to some writers at RS :
- we don't want old songs to dominate so let's add some random recent tracks
- let's smuggle some of our politics/views in there, why not.

In what world do you end up with Fight the Power by Public Enemy at #2 and 'Get Ur Freak On' by Missy Elliott at #8 with an actual cold/blind aggregate ? No way.
Do we know what the actual methodology was ?

I hope the good people over at AcclaimedMusic take into account methodology and bias when they add a ranking to their meta-rankings.

On AM, obviously before this list has been taken into account, Get Ur Freak On and Fight the Power are already #3 and #5 of all-time among hip hop tracks and have both been in the all-time top 100 as long as this site has existed (or at least as long as the history page shows). Neither of these are unusual choices for a list that includes hip hop.

In my opinion, "Get Ur Freak On" is the best song in the top 10. It's one of the most singularly creative songs to ever become a pop hit and nothing since has captured its sense of energy and sound.
