VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
Vulture - The 100 Songs That Define New York Rap, Ranked: https://www.vulture.com/article/new-yor ... anked.html
NOTE!: There is something quite unclear going on with #7 & #8 on the website, they're both listed together like siamese (dream!)
Side Note: Glad to see "212" made it but I feel there's more to Azealia Banks than just "212" like "1991" or "Liqourice". This was a missed opportunity to include "Bad Babysitter" by Princess Superstar, Fannypack's "Camel Toe" and "Bust A Move" or "Know How" by Young MC. Other than that the list looks quite good, a little too heavy on Notorious B.I.G., Lil Kim and Jay Z and a bit low on the Beastie Boys.

Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
That top 5 is just about perfect but the list is a complete mess after that.
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
Some odd choices for sure like trying to spread the love to the 2010s and they didn't need to with the choices they made.
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
No "Rapper's Delight????"
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
Wikipedia claims they were from Jersey, I can’t help but assume they weren’t eligible. They belong on any list for defining a genre.
"The better a singer's voice, the harder it is to believe what they're saying."
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
Well, it was definitely recorded in Jersey, but so was "The Message." The group and the label were named for a neighborhood in Harlem.
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
It does seem like it especially with Pop Smoke. Other than that, the list looks very heavy on the 90s.

Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
Something like that sometimes confuses me. There's also Beyonce who is an artist from Texas but the song "Crazy In Love" is under New York. I don't know if that's because it was recorded there or because Jay Z is an artist from New York, yet the album with that song is under Texas.
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
This list seems to be missing some worthy names. But, I admire your sharing. Some of songs on this list I don't know. I will try listening them.
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
Why thank you, sweet one. That was a kind thing to say. I just hope it doesn't get annoying. I don't really know that much on this list. Hip Hop and Rap ain't really my thing.

No, he's from Boston! Can't you read? It's right there in Axel's post. And, according to the text below his post, he like Eminem music and have Instagram profile about him. He must know what he's talking about!

I'm so sorry, how foolish could I be? Axel's the expert here! I obviously need to watch 8 Mile again and look out for the part where Em does a cypher at the Liberty Bell.Harold wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 3:10 amNo, he's from Boston! Can't you read? Also, isn't the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia? Unless that's the joke, and we're just mashing up metropoli at random now.

Yes, that’s totally me going along with the joke and not conflating Philly and Boston because I just visited Philly.Harold wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 5:11 amMy favorite scene is the one where he pahks the cah at Hahvahd Yahd.StevieFan13 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 04, 2021 4:35 am I'm so sorry, how foolish could I be? Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
I'd shuffle it a bit but I agree.
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
i think that these hip hop lists are more like a genre of west-coast / east-coast hip-hop rather than a country list

I’ll leave that decision to a hip hop expert.

Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
I remember Henrik said one time that a list that only represents a region and not country shouldn't be eligible. So i find this contradictory. Or that criteria have been changed?
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
this case is an exception for me because its about east-coast hip hop subgenre of hip hop music that originated in New York City , but in general cases this type of list could be something like a sub-country so with a lower weight

Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
That is a very forced interpretation of what the title says. As some says before it's not "Rapper's Delight" and that's an East Coast song that's not part because it's not from New York.
Re: VULTURE: 100 Songs That Define New York Rap
I don't know where says the lists represents all the East Coast Hip Hop beyond New York.To decide the “best” of New York rap would only tell half the story — an uneven one — so instead, we invited a team of writers to rank a new type of local canon: 100 songs that capture a bigger picture of the sound of the city. Old heads will tell you that New York rap is a distinct sound rooted in the thunder-and-lightning interplay between kick and snare drums in an East Coast boom-bap track, but really, it’s an attitude, a way to be. It’s the noisy, flashy style Harlem folks pick up across 125th Street and the gruff, no-nonsense speech of Brooklynites, the insular slang of the Queensbridge projects and the versatile blend of cultures you see in a trip through the Bronx.
