✅ Rolling Stone Brazil: 100 Greatest Brazilian Songs

Post by Dexter »

I know Blanco submitted RS's 100 Greatest Brazilian Albums but I didn't saw one for RS's 100 Greatest Brazilian Songs. I hope this gets in because foreign language music is underrepresented in AM, imho.

Any comment from a Brazilian or anyone familiar with Brazilian music? I'm surprised by the low placing of "Garota de Ipanema", "Baby" and "Manhã de Carnaval" and where is "A Minha Menina" and "Taj Mahal"?

The brazilian music, with the notable exception of Bossa Nova or Tropikália, never had a big world fame. The consequence is that many great brazilian albums and great songs aren't much remembered out of the Brazil, but this is an injustice. Believe, there is much more good brazilian music than Bossa Nova or Tropikália. Bossa Nova and Tropikália aren't the only good brazilian music of history.

In my opinion, the brazilian music is underrated in the world. There are may great brazilian albums that aren't much remembered or so these albums don't have the rating suficiently high deserved.

To be fair, that's about the case for every single piece of music released outside the English-speaking world. Sometimes, for some reason, something in the native language gets through, like some artists, albums or songs of French chanson or Brazilian bossa nova, but they are just exceptions.

Can you recommend to us some good Brazilian music outside of Bossa Nova and Tropikália? I know there's a style called MPB or musica popular Brasiliera but it still basically Brazilian pop...
I've been listening to Cansei de Ser Sexy and Los Hermanos recently, are they a big deal there in Brazil?

A bit late, but I would like to suggest some albums or songs:

RPM - Revoluções por Minuto (Revolutions Per Minute) - Live 2002: https://open.spotify.com/album/0Z7TqtH5 ... ktFCoYk_ww
Almost all songs are great rock.

Legião Urbana - Acústico: https://open.spotify.com/album/1vx6Vefn ... ZYkldZiUcQ
You find this album also in live presentation on YouTube easily.
Almost all songs are great.

Shaman - Ritual (yeap, its brazilian band): https://open.spotify.com/album/4cz4Dkbe ... gH9I7kImuQ
Best tracks in my opinion: For Tomorrow, Fairy Tale (also live on YT)

Shaman - Angels Cry/Holy Land: https://open.spotify.com/album/4Ul2fXqM ... AoWgLJEg4w
Best track: Carry On

Angra - Rebirth: https://open.spotify.com/album/2ruinOPJ ... Fmciv6bfWA
Best tracks in my opinion: Nova Era, Heroes of Sand, Rebirth.

If I can help out... There's some examples of MPB here, but you'll find as you listen that it doesn't have the usual pop music trappings.
And well, Los Hermanos used to be all over the airwaves with "Anna Júlia" (their first hit single, which became so pervasive they grew sick of it themselves for a while), but their later releases didn't have the same success save for the pop/rock crowd (I like their third album, Ventura). CSS has always been more restrict to the alternative circuit, though. They both enjoyed regular rotation on our MTV before it got killed and replaced with a vapid cable channel.

Roberto Carlos - O Inimitável (1968)
This is part of a movement called Jovem Guarda (Young Guard), very influenced by early rock'n roll and the British Invasion in a style that was popularly called "iê-iê-iê" (literally yeah, yeah, yeah) here. Jovem Guarda itself was quite popular before it got superseded by the Tropicália movement in the late 60s. Roberto Carlos was one of its biggest names, and he came to be called "The King" due to his immense popularity. Personally I like this 60s phase of his better - as the 70s went on he would shift into romantic pop (kind of like Julio Iglesias, to offer a comparison - in fact they even did a few duets if memory serves).

https://open.spotify.com/album/7yrRo2o4 ... l_branch=1
Chico Buarque - Construção (1971)
One of the basics to understand what MPB is. This one's listed on AM.net.

https://open.spotify.com/album/5risYG7k ... l_branch=1
Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges - Clube da Esquina (1972)
Another fine MPB record. It's on AM.net too.

https://open.spotify.com/album/4EGy60w4 ... l_branch=1
Raul Seixas - Gita (1974)
One of the main names of Brazilian rock. Even though the genre wouldn't take off until the 80s, Raul had left a lasting influence since the previous decade.

https://open.spotify.com/album/3qpZA5AE ... l_branch=1
Paulinho da Viola (1975)
One of my favorite samba singers.

Rita Lee - Fruto Proibido (1975)
She sang on Mutantes (whom I didn't include because they were part of the Tropicália movement) and then branched out on her solo career, producing plenty of hits from the 70s all the way into the 2000s, many of which are on this album.

Elis Regina - Falso Brilhante (1976)
Possibly Brazil's finest songstress. Her voice gives me chills to this day.

Caetano Veloso - Bicho (1977)
I usually don't care much for him, but when I do, I find myself enjoying it. I like some stuff in here.

Tim Maia - O Descobridor dos Sete Mares (1983)
This may not be the best in his discography, but this guy could sing R&B like nobody's business regardless. And heck, it's a damn fine party record.

Os Paralamas do Sucesso - O Passo do Lui (1984)
One of the best-known Brazilian rock bands, they were more of a ska band in the 80s, but with time their sound matured to include more Brazilian rhythms and became more artsy.

https://open.spotify.com/album/24C4G6Kc ... l_branch=1
Plebe Rude - O Concreto Já Rachou (1985)
A classic of Brazilian punk rock, if it floats your boat.

https://open.spotify.com/album/4OCJTpOL ... l_branch=1
Legião Urbana - Dois (1986)
More Brazilian rock. This band came out of the Brasília punk scene, while also embracing post-punk heavily. Their frontman Renato Russo basically became the voice for the 80s and early 90s youth here in Brazil, with songs that related to their feelings (and still do).

Cazuza - Ideologia (1988)
Another icon of Brazilian rock. He was basically our Freddie Mercury, up until the point he decided to break out into his solo career.

https://open.spotify.com/album/5r4qa5AI ... l_branch=1
Sepultura - Chaos A.D. (1993)
My personal favorite of theirs.

Chico Science & Nação Zumbi - Da Lama ao Caos (1994)
This band does a style called "mangue beat", which is melding traditional Brazilian Northeastern rhythms with alternative rock. This album is on the main site too.

Gilberto Gil - Unplugged (1994)
I'm not too deeply knowledgeable on his work to recommend an album, but I know how important he is for our culture, so I'm putting up this live instead. Some of his better-known songs are here.

Skank - Calango (1994)
Like Paralamas in the 80s, this band does ska with some Brazilian rhythmic influence, although their sound in general takes a lot after the 60s British bands.

Daniela Mercury - Feijão com Arroz (1996)
I don't usually like axé music (which is basically a mixture of pop and regional rhythms from Bahia), but this singer I like. A lot of people will point you to Ivete Sangalo to introduce you to axé and I understand, she's charismatic and larger than life and has been our biggest pop star for about 20 years now, but Daniela came before her and helped open the gates for Ivete and others in her wake. I especially enjoy the more understated songs, myself.

Racionais MC's - Sobrevivendo no Inferno (1997)
Brazilian rap. I could define it as "if Public Enemy did gangsta rap", but I think that would be too shallow.

https://open.spotify.com/album/5eF1HzO5 ... l_branch=1
Charlie Brown Jr. - Nadando com os Tubarões (2000)
Alternative rock and hip-hop mixed together. One of the favorite bands of our "MTV generation" (90s and early 2000s; their Unplugged is sensational too) due to how they spoke to the youth of the time. And hey, I was one of those kids.

It was supposed to be just a few, but I got carried away and had to round it up to 20, sorry. ^^'
(and sorry again for replying FIVE YEARS LATER xP)

There’s only one critics’ list in this topic and it’s already included.
