Something weird is going on with the spreadsheet, whenever I open it again after exiting out, the contents of the cells columns L through R (or rather, the ones among them that are actually calculating something at the time) change to "=#VALUE!" and won't calculate the points unless I copy and paste the formula from an old template sheet.

BTW, I deleted the original thread because I had accidentally assigned the wrong winner for the Latin Grammy.

Pretty surprised with "Be Sweet" at #1, but it's a very pleasant surprise because that song is very good.

Also, 3 Wolf Alice songs in the top 100, but none of them are "How Can I Make it OK?" (the obvious standout from their album)?? For shame.

If there's a Bo Burnham song that most deserves to be here I think it's Welcome to the Internet, but That Funny Feeling is the predictable inclusion because it's less 'silly' (perhaps gaining more legitimacy with that Phoebe Bridgers cover)

Big agree. While I love Bo Burnham's stuff, Welcome to the Internet is the only song I find myself listening to on its own.

Bussifame...oh no...

Having listened, I now know it's a cute way of spelling Bust It For Me, but

Oh, THAT's what it means. I haven't listened to it yet, but that title definitely shook me a bit when I first saw it in a list.

1. Japanese Breakfast - Be Sweet

This being at #1 reminds me of 2014 when the SOTY was Seasons (Waiting on You) and everyone was like "well, I guess there aren't many alternatives..." (and I like both of those songs). It's quite weird to me that it's the only JB song in the top 100 with how acclaimed that album was with several potential alternatives, especially my personal favorite Paprika.

2. Lil Nas X - Montero (Call Me By Your Name)
51. Lil Nas X feat. Jack Harlow - Industry Baby

Can't figure out the gap between these two - both were huge and I prefer the latter.

4. Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen - Like I Used To
32. The War on Drugs feat. Lucius - I Don't Live Here Anymore

We have a clear winner in the "legacy indie rock that openly sounds like 80s Springsteen" lane.

3. Caroline Polachek - Bunny Is a Rider
12. Charli XCX - Good Ones

I adore both artists but it's funny that these two songs will end up so high on the AM list relative to their other work.

19. black midi - John L

Great song, but how is it doing so well while the album is really underperforming?

35. Noname - Rainforest

Not a terrible placement, but I'm looking forward to it being T10 in the AMF poll.

70. Circuit des Yeux - Dogma

One of my favorite discoveries from the EOY lists so far.

80. Spellling - Little Deer

This is better than Boys from School? In what world?

After I made this comment I went back and checked the AM 2014 songs list. I stand corrected because that year was rad for acclaimed songs: Two Weeks, Queen, Can't Do Without You, Chandelier, Archie Marry Me, Uptown Funk, and Blank Space round out the top 8 after Seasons. All but one of those was in my AT songs list, plus some great songs a little further down like Never Catch Me, Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck), and I'm Not Part of Me.

Was just gonna type a response. 2014 is maybe one of the best years last decade in my book. Sun Kil Moons album Benji, Spoons album They Want My Soul, I Need My Girl with The National came out as a single and the underrated "I" as the first single from Kendrik Lamars masterpiece. 2013-2015 was generally some great years the last decade. The twenties so far has been nothing but disapointment in my book. Of course a few great songs has slipped through but generally two of the worst years during my liftetime.

I'm really hating the awful Latin songs that are chosing in the US media. Not just one, they repeat the same in many sources. Worse than other years.

Any idea when the next update will be?

I hate asking because it is the holidays - but also because it is the holidays, I have a ton of time off and would like to play catch up before making my own end of year list.

Once again, I can't promise anything, but I should have nothing but free time after today, so a Christmas update could well be possible.

Started going through this and tbh very solid set of songs. First song I just didn’t like was Thot Shit, and I love the amount of women on the list. Women have just been destroying these since like 2017, and I’m here for it!

I think Uproxx makes their own list separate from the critics poll, and that's what I included. That confusion's cleared up now, it seems.

:music-listening:

Some comments:

The acclaim for "Todo de ti" is ridiculous. It's good song but not for a Top 20 of 2001, even it's not the best song in Spanish of the year.

In this new update it feels the impact of Spanish sources (Alizz, Rigoberta, Zahara, Nueve Desconocidos..all from Spain).

Happy for "Telepatía". Sad for "Blackout". I think when Radionica and Uproxx Annual Music Poll gets included will be back to Top 100.

I'll be waiting for theneedledrop effect. Maybe there's no much impact, who knows?

Thanks Ron once again.

Thanks for the update! I much preferred Be Sweet to Like I Used To as the top song for the year, but there's still time for them to flip again. Happy to see Telepatia and Keep Moving in the top 100 now, both of which I thought would do well with critics.

By the way, how the heck is Take My Breath by The Weeknd not on here at all? It's right up there with any of his previous acclaimed work, and he's probably the biggest pop star in the world.

How does everyone feel about this list?

It seems so tepid to me.

I'm sad and surprised that Illuminati Hotties - MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA, one of the most fun songs of the year, fell hard after a pretty good start.

I don't think there is any song from this year that would have made my top 5 last year, maybe a couple I could imagine in my top 10, so I don't have a lot of feelings on the critics list! Those songs in the top 10 are good if not all time greats.

Continuing my slow journey through this list and, while plenty of songs each year aren't to my taste and I can accept that, "American tteroristt" feels like an unhinged Reddit conspiracy thread come to life and I'm kind of alarmed by its presence here.

I haven't heard the song myself, so I can't speak to its sonic merits, but evidently neither can any of the critics here. I'm honestly just as bewildered as you are.

My takeaway is that the guy is parodying popular conspiracy myths by mentioning them in the same breath as all kinds of ridiculous made-up stuff, and there are some pretty funny lines in there. Also, the whole track kinda captures the vibe of nervous uncertainness that most people experienced in the past two years. I don't think it's in bad faith.

I heard "American Terrorist" once. I don't have much of a desire to ever hear it again. I guess I appreciate what he's doing on the song but there really isn't anything there for me. Like BleuPanda said, it's like a 9 minute long Reddit shitpost.

I would categorize "american tterroristt" with LCD Soundsystem's "Losing My Edge", a lengthy, essentially spoken-word track that challenges the audience by constantly shifting between various levels of irony, never quite belying where its true intentions lie. It's also deeply funny and extremely quotable. I've always been a fan of conspiracy theories as an object of sociological study, and the song's scatterbrained lyrics and ominous beat capture the conspiracist zeitgeist of the past five years better than any work outside of Under the Silver Lake.

In addition, Nephew cuts through the conspiracies and irony with several lines of deeply-felt emotion:

"Donald Trump can't stop immigrants
Lost my ID, I'm an immigrant
They pulled me over like, "What's your name?"
Bitch, I forgot my social security number
They asked about my mother maiden name
I'm like, "I don't know, we don't know each other""'

and

"Fifth grade, smarter than my parents
Grandma couldn't help with algebra
Grandma like, "What the fuck is algebra?"
She like, "That's a goddamn shame
Them people gonna keep makin' up shit tryna keep you in the same grade""

I definitely understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I can't stop playing it on repeat.

I was enjoying it - it's idiosyncratic and got a nice beat to it - up until the narrator suggests Will Smith should take advice from Chris Brown and beat up Jada Smith. Is this really still acceptable in acclaimed hip hop music? Come on, man, do better.

I don't know, possibly this weekend if I can get out enough to make an incomplete update, but it's possible I won't get anything out until the end of the month (which is usually when the lists stop coming in).

Panam I have to agree. Impatience helps no one. These comments are demoralizing for those who are producing the lists and rollouts.

Comments about my feelings or my anxiety is different to say "i want my update right now" or something like that. I'm always try to help if something is needed and I will always respect if somebody thinks i can offend someone. but I didn't like when ask me with an unpleasant tone. He could ask me gently and not put me against Ron, because that's disrespectful. I'll try not say everything else. If you need some information and I'll try to help. I'm not a foe of everybody. I love you all.

Oh no, I didn't want things to come to this... as I said, I can't promise you anything, but it is my current intention to have an update out at the end of the month, regardless of whether or not I'm actually caught up.
