I'm surprised no one is talking about Big Thief's Little Things. Picks up right where they left off in their strong 2020, seems like a shoo-in for top ten in our end of year list.

Another recent favorite is Magdalena Bay's Secrets (Your Fire), which combines a lot of fun disco and synth-funk influences. Their debut album is one of my most anticipated of the rest of the year.

The top 20 or so songs by mentions are:

Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, and Silk Sonic - Leave the Door Open,
Doja Cat Featuring SZA - Kiss Me More
Japanese Breakfast - Be Sweet,
Lil Nas X - MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)
Cardi B - Up
Justin Bieber feat. Daniel Caesar & Giveon - Peaches
Olivia Rodrigo - Drivers License,
Polo G - Rapstar,
BTS - Butter
Megan Thee Stallion - Thot Shit
Saweetie feat. Doja Cat, Jamie & CHANMINA - Best Friend
SZA - Good Days
Jazmine Sullivan feat. H.E.R. - Girl Like Me
Olivia Rodrigo - Good 4 U
Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen - Like I Used To
Cassandra Jenkins - Hard Drive
Drake Featuring Rick Ross - Lemon Pepper Freestyle
Jazmine Sullivan – Pick Up Your Feelings
Nicki Minaj featuring Drake and Lil Wayne - Seeing Green,
St. Vincent - Down
Willow Smith featuring Travis Barker – Transparent Soul

If I limit it so sites that are acclaimed and other music/arts/entertainment focused, the top songs are similar (top 15)

Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, and Silk Sonic - Leave the Door Open,
Doja Cat Featuring SZA - Kiss Me More"
Japanese Breakfast – “Be Sweet”
Cardi B - Up"
Lil Nas X, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”
Polo G – “Rapstar”
SZA, "Good Days"
IDK and Offset - Shoot My Shot"
Jazmine Sullivan – “Pick Up Your Feelings”
Jazmine Sullivan feat. H.E.R., “Girl Like Me”
Justin Bieber feat. Daniel Caesar & Giveon, "Peaches"
Olivia Rodrigo – “Drivers License”
Saweetie Featuring Doja Cat - Best Friend"
Sharon Van Etten & Angel Olsen – “Like I Used To”
Willow Smith featuring Travis Barker – Transparent Soul
Young Thug and Gunna - Ski"
Thanks for assembling this, ColmD, but I am really losing faith in critics after looking at this list. These are seriously the most acclaimed songs so far this year? Are they now just listening to the radio and nothing else? "Butter" and "Peaches"? Good God. What about "Introvert" by Little Simz? "White Elephant" by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis? Anything from the Floating Points album? I so prefer the AMF semifinalists for the best songs of the year. Yikes.

Agreed with you on "Butter". That is one of the blandest and uninspired singles of the year, and the follow-up "Permission to Dance" is even worse in every way. There are hundreds of forward-thinking and ridiculously catchy K-Pop singles every year. It is a disservice to have such a lame song to at the forefront.

Anyways, "Good Days" by SZA is heads and shoulders above everything else in that list. That song is incredible.

There are definitely songs I like on this list. ("Good Days" included.) I just felt the need to vent since it's so pop-oriented. (And I'm probably one of the forumers who most likes pop music the most. My all-time list is about half pop and half acclaimed music, with the usual overlap.) I saw that ColmD's sources did include un-acclaimed sites for the first list; but, given what I've seen from the critics the past few years, I can all but guarantee every one of those will still rank highly on the final critics list. I love the diverse tastes of the forum, so I pretty much just look at our final list as the one I need to explore now.

This is very interesting; I'm interested to see how Olivia Rodrigo's music will place by the time the year-end lists come along. She's making some of the best music from a mainstream pop star I've heard in a long time.

The Sour album was pleasantly surprising, reminds me of music from when I was a teenager, like Green Day and Paramore, giving off strong pop-punk vibes. For example, "deja vu" is basically like the zoomer version of "Redundant." The album is also quite thematically cohesive, but at the same displays a good variety of sounds and styles. I am partial to the closer, "I hope ur ok," I'm a sucker for these songs that come off as mature for their age. But I find Rodrigo's voice to be rather anonymous, albeit strong, and too influenced by Billie Eilish's voice. Also the production/instrumentation, while decent, is rather middle-of-the-road, even if it's properly angst-filled. The album isn't a home run, but I look forward to her future work, and hope she carves out more of her own lane.

I disagree, I think Dua Lipa and The Weeknd put out far better mainstream music just last year. Out of her three big singles "good 4 u" is the only one that stuck with me, and even that is so derivative of Paramore that they were given a songwriting credit (though I do think it's cool that a song in this style became a big hit, it's been a while). I tried to make it through Sour and I cut it off after a few songs; it just seemed completely geared to a teenage listener in sound and content. That said, it's been a pretty barren year for mainstream music and Olivia checks enough of the "poptimism" boxes that I expect she'll be all over EOY lists.

Regarding Olivia Rodrigo, I really like "driver's license" and "deja vu". The former is dramatic and angsty but it fits well within the context of being teenager and having your heart broken for the first time; everything feels like the end of the world and Olivia brings a sense of drama in her vocal performance that works. I prefer the arrangement of "deja vu" but it could have been more satisfying.

Speaking of "satisfying", I discovered this Philly Soul-inspired single from Vietnam, with muscular drums, gorgeous string and horn arrangement and a fantastic vocal performance by the singer. "New Sunny Days" by Minh Tốc & Lam (a husband-wife duo) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cS7Nr67vMI

With the critics' lists coming out in less than a month, I thought I'd try to put together a preliminary list before I finally catch up on all the best songs of the year. This is a very rough list at this point, and I'm really hoping I discover enough new music that only half of these make my final list:

19. The Path, Lorde
20. Hot & Heavy, Lucy Dacus
21. Things A Man Oughta Know, Lainey Wilson
22. Mood Ring, Lorde
23. Valentine, Snail Mail

So...any ideas for what's going to be the #1 song of the year on the critic's list? The last three SOTYs were all #1 singles in the US (WAP, Bad Guy, This Is America), which means that there's at least a decent chance that this year will be more of the same (hey, it's the era of poptimism, what did you expect?).

However, looking over the list of 2021 #1s I really only see a few songs that could claim the crown, namely Silk Sonic's "Leave the Door Open" and Lil Nas X's "Montero". Maybe Adele's "Easy on Me" and Lil Nas X's "Industry Baby" could be dark horses, but that's about it. The other #1s just don't seem to have the critical clout that these songs do.

What do you all think?

However, looking over the list of 2021 #1s I really only see a few songs that could claim the crown, namely Silk Sonic's "Leave the Door Open" and Lil Nas X's "Montero". Maybe Adele's "Easy on Me" and Lil Nas X's "Industry Baby" could be dark horses, but that's about it. The other #1s just don't seem to have the critical clout that these songs do.

What do you all think?

I'd guess Driver's License is the most likely one, though I don't know how it will do outside the US.
No idea what other songs could make it to be honest. Be Sweet is a likely top 10, I guess Montero too. Seeing some mid year lists, I guess you could be right about Leave the Door Open but I don't think I have ever heard that song !

Good point on "Driver's License"! I think that one and "Good 4 U" will probably make the final top 20 at least.

We are in a weird era in which there aren't many songs that seem like they will generate much critics' consensus outside of big mainstream hits. The two big Olivia Rodrigo and Lil Nas X songs are near-certainties to fill a lot of lists. I hope The Weeknd's Take My Breath does well but for some reason that song didn't blow up like it could/should have.

Be Sweet is as good of a guess as any for the biggest indie song of the year.

I fear that Montero or Driver’s License will take the top spot, and will keep up with recent trends of SOTY being mostly forgettable a year later. Maybe Easy on Me will move ahead, but Adele hasn’t performed particularly well on the EOY lists outside of Rolling in the Deep.

Be Sweet, I Don’t live Here Anymore, and like I Used To are all songs I’d love to see take the top spot, but I think don’t think they’re mainstream enough to have a shot.

Also, there are quite a few rap heavy publications in the mix that will likely ignore the indie rock songs, so I feel like Montero is going to take the top spot.

Album of the Year is also an interesting conversation. Could little Simz or Japanese Breakfast take the top spot?

I think that Deja Vu is Rodrigo's best song and hope to see it crack the list. This may be a far-fetched hope but I really hope that Like I Used To by Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen is No. 1.

"To Be Loved" by Adele might be taking the crown this year as I have seen several publication singing very high praises for the song. It is probably one of the best and rawest vocal performances I've heard this year.

Wet Leg's Chaise Longue has three top five finishes in EOY lists already, so it's a clear contender for critics' song of the year. I'm not surprised at all to see it acclaimed, though to me it seems like one of those songs that sounds fresh in the first few listens but gets old quickly. I prefer their other song, Wet Dream, which has a similar vibe but is less repetitive.

Another year, another case of me being completely baffled by the critic process. "Bunny is a Rider" has no mention here, yet it's doing very well with critics. I just don't understand where this consensus is coming from - is there some place I'm not looking where the big songs are being discussed each year? Thankfully, full albums have Metacritic, but I still feel completely oblivious as to where the hype behind individual songs comes from (outside of the big hits or featuring on those acclaimed albums).

Pitchfork, who listed the song at #1, has a Best New Song section on their website, but there are only a handful each year which somehow does not include this apparent 'Song of the Year.' Why? If they love this song so much, why are we only hearing about that now? And if it was just one source, fine, but so many are putting this song very high up.

This is not a commentary on the song itself - it is growing on me with each listen - but I genuinely have no idea how I can never hear about so many songs that end up making dozens of year-end lists. Is there a source I'm overlooking?

Did you miss Polachek's debut album Pang from a couple of years ago? After that, I've been following her closely including listening to this song when it dropped over the summer. It is a bit unusual for a non-album single from an artist of her stature to do so well in EOY lists, but I'm all for it.

I at least knew "Door," but I guess there are few artists I pay close enough attention to for me to realize when singles drop. I also didn't realize A Beginner's Mind was happening until the week it dropped despite there being several singles, and that's by one of my all-time favorites - so I really am just completely out of the loop until albums are featured on Metacritic and MCCH.

Spotify's Release Radar often alerts me to new singles by artists I've listened to. I also check the RYM singles and albums charts pretty regularly, as newer releases are often artificially high before they get a mass of ratings. But there's no way to cover everything, and I agree I'm often surprised I hadn't heard about some of the tracks that do well in EOY lists each year (last year Lifetime by Romy comes to mind).

BTW - I agree it's weird that Pitchfork doesn't BNM new tracks very often, even ones it really likes based on EOY placements.

Usually you can keep up with releases by following artists and labels on Twitter. Also my Google feed gives me news articles. I don't use Bandcamp too much, but I think you can subscribe to mailing lists and such there.

Dang for some reason I feel like Chaise Longue is gonna do poorly in our EOY list which is too bad.

Chaise Longue was one of the indie hits of the year, and anyone who missed it when it came out surely knows it now. It'll do just fine.

I'm just sorting through the ~400+ 7/10+ songs that I've got from the year. A preliminary top 30 songs below (which I'm sure will change in the next few weeks). I also first wanted to highlight a few songs that don't seem to have gotten the attention they deserve:

Water From Your Eyes - "Quotations"
Great psychedelic pop piece, with artful looping that sucks you in. Sounds like a mix of Feels-era Animal Collective and Dan Deacon.

Manchester Orchestra - Keel Timing
This and 'Bed Head' are easy favourites from the LP. Indie rock infused with electronic beats. Feels a bit late 90s / early 00s due to the melodic hooks and the quiet-loud dynamic.

Parannoul - 흰천장 (White Ceiling)
Ten minute shoegaze epic that easily earns its run time. It is a nice enough melody, but it is the fuzzed-out/distorted production makes the song.

Gang of Youths - The Angel of 8th Ave.
Pretty much sounds like a more energetic 'The War on Drugs' song wrapped into a four minute package. Instant classic.

Martha Marlow - All of My Days
Her voice reminds me of Laura Marling. Soothing folk with a bit of strings.

Coldplay - Coloratura
Sounds nothing like the rest of the record. Coldplay go prog and it works.

Mitski - Heat Lightning
Not necessarily unknown, but seems overlooked on the year end lists at least - I guess because of the December release. But this is every bit as good as the other two singles.

1 | Mdou Moctar | Afrique Victime
2 | Cassandra Jenkins | Hard Drive
3 | Mitski | Heat Lightning
4 | Wet Leg | Chaise Longue
5 | Mitski | Working for the Knife
6 | Noname | Rainforest
7 | Lana Del Rey | White Dress
8 | black midi | John L
9 | Water From Your Eyes | Quotations
10 | Genesis Owusu | The Other Black Dog
11 | Manchester Orchestra | Keel Timing
12 | Beach House | Once Twice Melody
13 | Mitski | The Only Heartbreaker
14 | Black Country, New Road | Science Fair
15 | Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine | Back To Oz
16 | Parannoul | 흰천장 (White Ceiling)
17 | Weezer | Grapes Of Wrath
18 | Gang of Youths | the angel of 8th ave.
19 | Brandi Carlile | Right on Time
20 | Kero Kero Bonito | The Princess and the Clock
21 | Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp | So Many Things (To Feel Guilty About)
22 | Squid | Narrator ft. Martha Skye Murphy
23 | Magdalena Bay | Secrets (Your Fire)
24 | Little Simz | I Love You, I Hate You
25 | Lana Del Rey | Text Book
26 | Cassandra Jenkins | Crosshairs
27 | Martha Marlow | All of My Days
28 | Black Country, New Road | Bread Song
29 | Sarah Neufeld | Tumble Down The Undecided
30 | Arooj Aftab | Mohabbat
