Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2020 (update November 30)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 32 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash; DIY; God Is In The Tv; Load And Quiet; Music OMH; The Guardian; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture; Under The Radar

Highlights: Rob makes the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, etc…

Updates playlist:

The Microphones in 2020 is still not on Spotify. Here it is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7BkabF31ak

Yeah, these last updates have been poor (unless you are shocked by losing The Chats, again). I don't think that the actual release schedule was quite as sad, but it doesn't somehow make MegaCritic.

Also, look at that Nicolas Jaar drop.

I think his point was more that there should be more, better albums being released, and that the lack of high quality albums is frustrating, not picking out Megan Thee Stallion specifically for criticism.

Just ”That’s Good News!” would have been a fantastic joke! :D

Looking closely at your list. I wonder where's SAULT ? - ENIGMA IN DANCE - The musical revelation of 2020?

Sault released two albums in 2020 ! Four in the last 2 years.

The first Untitled (Black is) in june (**** according to ALLMusic / 86 (4 reviews) according to Metacritic.com & the second Untitled (Rise) in october (****1/2 according to ALLMusic / 99 (4 reviews) according to Metacritic.com.

Did you miss two of the most relevant albums of 2020 ?

On Spotify:

Untitled I (Black is): https://open.spotify.com/album/0GPmuVuC ... nWgmeZCU7g
Untitled II (Rise): https://open.spotify.com/album/0K8jX7CL ... oehJkq3X2Q

Too few reviews to be included. I believe you need 7 or 8 to enter, and they barely got any reviews.

SAULT is making up it with their performance on EOY lists so far!

They certainly are. Every year, there are a few albums that seemingly come out of nowhere when the EOY lists start appearing, and these two albums may turn out to be the ultimate examples of this phenomenon. I became aware of their existence via the 2020 list on the Album of the Year website, but even on Rate Your Music and Best Ever Albums they're nowhere near the top for the year, or the middle, or practically anywhere. SAULT's performance so far on the EOY's is pretty astonishing.
