New site update!

Post by Henrik »

It has finally happened!

Thanks to EVERYONE who has helped me with lots of different things. But I want to direct a special thanks to Sweepstakes Ron, who took the initiative to add genre information for all the ~17 000 songs!!!!!

As you can read here, this genre information also made a lot of difference to the all-time song ranking.

Absolutely wonderful, Henrik! Much larger changes than I expected (and Alright for the No. 1 song of the 2010s?! That's crazy to me, but a worthy song!)

Well I know how I'm spending my day. Thanks for all of the work to make this happen, Henrik!

First reaction: 2018 is way less acclaimed than I would've expected, especially on the albums side. The critics don't seem to like Janelle Monáe as much as we do!

This surprised me too, but most lists had "Alright" very high or selected a different Kendrick Lamar song. In the all-time ranking, one-song-per-artist lists are handled differently compared to the end of decade spreadsheet, which benefits artists with multiple acclaimed songs.

Another surprise for me was Funeral going up despite being only at 500 on RS list.

Thanks a lot Henrik!

1 problem I noticed.
I checked Stressed Out's AM page (The song was added in this update). It was also on "Consequence of Sound - Ranking: Every Alternative Rock No. 1 Hit From Worst to Best " but it isn't mentioned on its page. (The list was included in 2017's update)

Joining the choir of praises: Thank you!

To Pimp a Butterfly takes the place as the most acclaimed album of the 2010s and the most acclaimed hip hop album (deservedly so).

There are some methodology changes that overall benefit newer albums and songs. Lists that claim they are all-time lists, but have most of their albums/songs from a certain time period (usually excluding recent music), have gotten somewhat lower weights.

Like many others said, this Sunday appears to bring new plans from now on for many of us... A big thanks once again, Henrik. Just a quick question: are there spreadsheets of the all time albums and songs available? If so, where?

I'm so happy TPAB beat MBDTF.

Also, I totally agree with the Blackstar placement.

Nevermind passing Revolver is also a surprise.

Is there a list that has the old ranking next to it?

Thanks Henrik! Updates that popped out: Nevermind at #2, new albums rounding out the top 100, "Oblivion" by Grimes in the top 100 songs, "Satisfaction" brought fairly low, P.I.M.P. as the #1 hip-hop album, and the Who and the Beach Boys switching off in the top 10 artists section.

For everyone asking about comparisons to previous versions of the lists: Henrik has posted a link, a few posts above, to the "History" section of the main AM page, with spreadsheets for the new all-time album and song lists. These spreadsheets contain columns listing previous rankings.

Damn, I had a bit of an off-line day today, so I missed the chance to make this Sunday all about this update. The again, I just returned from seeing the beautiful Nick Cave concert film Idiot Prayer in my local cinema, so that was a good musical afternoon.

Luckily my holiday begins Tuesday, so I will take the plunge then. For now, I'll probably only see results when they are important for the collaborative playlist and for my Musical Mountain project (I hope to have the Funeral review up tonight, but am not sure if that is going to happen).

Speaking of my Musical Mountain project, all three albums I reviewed from the bottom have predictably fallen off, as I see in Nassim's post.

Some thoughts and opinions:
Happy to see LCD Soundsystem gain some ground without losing a whole lot other than American Dream.
Sad to see Reflektor fall so far! Over the past few months it has slowly become my favorite of there’s!
Interesting to see Kendrick top both of the 2010s categories, and even more surprising to se Alright do it. Not my favorite of his but a nice consensus choice.
Interesting also how there are more 2010s songs in the Top 100, but the albums in the Top 100 are higher up.

Great! Thanks to everyone involved.

-Yeezus as Kanye’s 2nd best is blasphemy.
-DAMN. is only that high because of the good will created by TPAB (I know I’m not the first to say it).
-The traditionalist in me will take time to get used to TPAB being above It Takes a Nation of Millions. With a cold head it feels right though.
-As much as I love Blackstar, it being the 2nd rated Bowie album feels wrong.
-Glad that 50’s artists and songs hold up nicely. We need more lists from that decade and earlier.
-Yay! The Beach Boys in the top 10!
-Achtung Baby in the top 10 of the 90’s!
-Strange Fruit keeps rising.
-Revolver below Nevermind felt inevitable. I hope Smells Like Teen Spirit never knocks Like a Rolling Stone.
-I was sure that Kate Bush would be higher in everything. :angry-banghead:

Henrik, and everyone else who chipped in on this, thank you so much. This new update is a treasure trove that I will be making discoveries from for weeks to come. I think the aim of the new weighting system makes a lot of sense, and fascinating to see some of the new placements, especially from the 2010s. Didn't expect Alright at #1!

Wow that Mellow Gold is still clinging by the skin of its teeth as Becks second most acclaimed album and again other than Loser I rarely hear that much hype behind it. Doesn’t seem popular in this group at all. Wonder which publications are holding it in such high regard.

Great improvement with the genre albums and songs, and consequently many changes!
Good job Henrik.

But i have a litlle suggestion with the countries page.
i found it more logical to have artists by albums or songs language, instead of their origin.
cos i found it surprising to find the weeknd or Charli XCX in french page, just because there were featured with Daft Punk or Christine & The Queens!
it will exclude many albums or songs in this french page, but it will be more coherent.
there wouldn't be artist as Daft Punk, Air, Phoenix, Justice etc... which are more international artist than really typically french artists and are completely english language., even if they came from France.
Conversely, artists like Brel(Belgique) or Férré (Monaco) will integrate the french language page, especially that for this last one, it the unique artist for Monaco, just because Ferré was born in Monaco!
and you wouldn't have many countries with only a few artists.
The top 3 will be consequently "La vie en Rose", "Je t'aime moi non plus" and "Ne me quitte pas" .

and i think it's the same for spanish language, arab language, portuguese etc...

i know it takes another work, but The debate is open...

Great idea! Countries will stay, but language lists would be a nice addition in a future update.

I can assume the forum won't be happy with Julia and Laura being in there !
Deerhunter, Kendrick and Beach House (and maybe Kurt) probably suffer from those albums being overshadowed by their other releases of the decade.

It’s just a little bit more valuable for old albums, while it gets a lot more weight for albums that came out close before 2012.
