No Sleep 'til Hammersmith - 6/10

One of the few albums in this game that I'd heard before. And my feeling about it is that it's alright; live albums aren't always my favorite kind of album either though. Especially when the songs (for the most part) sound better on studio recording. "Ace of Spades" still rocks though.

Motörhead - No Sleep 'til Hammersmith: 7
As much as I love hard rock, I've always felt that a little Motörhead got a long way. So how about this live album then, that despite it's classic status I never heard before?
The thing is, as fun as Lemmy's raspy voice is, it is also the main reason that I can only listen to so many songs by the band after each other. That and the fact that they aren't the most varied musicians in town. Both of these downsides are inevitably here, but I do admit that once I give in I can get captivated by the their guitar hooks. The best is the one-two punch of Overkill and We Are the Roadcrew, their two greatest songs in my opinion. I doubt it will ever become one of my go-to hard rock albums, but there is fun to be had here.

Motörhead - No Sleep 'til Hammersmith: 8.5

I had listened to this live album, a feature that I don't particularly enjoy as a rule, but this is the exception.
There is something about Motorhead which I genuinely like and enjoy. I really don't consider them as Heavy Metal, although I can see why the genre would be attracted to the labelling.
This is pure, unadulterated, raucous fun and rock'n'roll. And the live versions are very close to the studio versions. Lemmy's growl and the band's fantastic riffs make this an album to revisit many times over.

Biography from Last.fm

Famously described by John Peel as being "always different, always the same", The Fall were formed in Manchester, England in 1976 during the Punk era although their style quickly evolved into something more idiosyncratic.

The one permanent fixture amidst the Fall's ever-changing line-up was Mark E. Smith (1957 – 2018). Smith's lyrics are free, unboxed and unpredictable, touching on an extremely wide range of subjects and places, and caring little for being tied down to easily digestible messages.

Smith's singing could put off some people, but others find it a uniquely expressive instrument. Smith was not a conventionally great vocalist, but his keen sense of rhythm, his energy and personality more than made up for this.

The Fall's music changed depending on the line-up at a given time. Always experimental, Mark E. Smith claimed to invent several musical genres, including house music; "we were doing that years ago" and even the internet. "He told me I didn't understand, that we were from the bleak industrial wastes of North England, or something, and that we didn't understand the Internet. I told him Fall fans invented the Internet. They were on there in 1982." One thing that is for sure is that The Fall (and their fans) always pushed the boundaries, and were never afraid to experiment.

The Fall were a favorite group of DJ John Peel, recording 24 sessions for his BBC1 radio program over the years.

The Fall's back catalogue consists of 29 studio albums, and is very fragmented with a seemingly endless number of compilations and semi-official live albums.

In 2006, British music-critic Dave Simpson published an entertaining account of a journalist's attempt to track down all 43 former members of The Fall in the Guardian. Many previous members have been fired, often with little or no notice. Simpson's ongoing effort was subsequently described at greater length in his book "The Fallen" (2008). His effort to track down the final unaccounted stragglers of at least 50 previous members of The Fall - including drummer Karl Burns - continues in his blog. Having decried Simpson's book as a "hatchet job" in the pages of Pseud. Mag., a Fall fan-mag, Mark E. Smith countered in short order with his autobiography "Renegade: The Lives and Tales of Mark E. Smith" (Viking, 2008/Penguin 2009).

Mark E. Smith died on 24 January 2018, aged 60.

4.5 stars

22 years into their career it seemed that The Fall had lost it: lame albums, Mark E. Smith in jail after attacking his bandmates on stage, the band in musical stasis for years. 25 years into their career, The Fall released this album, one of their very best.

Of course it was recorded by an entirely new band, an act of rejuvenation that also seems to have rejuvenated Smith himself. Rarely since their mid-80s "punk pop" albums have The Fall sounded similarly punchy and fresh. Everything is still recognizably The Fall, and yet it feels like a new start.

The album got its lengthy title from the fact that Smith had it entirely re-recorded and remixed after the initial version was leaked on the Internet. Whatever the reason, it was a good thing, as the original version, which was less guitar-based and drowned pretty much all songs in the mushy synths that appear on "Green Eyed Loco-Man", is rather dull and bland compared to the released version.

The mushy synths work in that particular song, which also kicks off the album nicely, but an entire album with that kind of sound is kind of tedious, especially as songs like "Sparta FC", "Boxoctosis" or "Contraflow" demand the fully developed guitar attacks that they are getting here.

There's not a weak song here, the usual "experimental" track is confined to a few seconds of "Loop41", and the exposure they (deservedly) got through this album, won back countless fans, who had already given up on them.

It's as if the years 1991-2001 hadn't happened at all.

The Real New Fall LP: Formerly Country on the Click - 7/10

This is the definition of top-heavy. There are so many great tracks in the first 7 (highlighted by "Contraflow" and "Green Eyed Loco-Man"), but the final five tracks bring the whole album down a bit.

The Fall - The Real New Fall LP: Formerly 'Country on the Click' 8.5/10

Being a Fall fan (they are just behind the Beatles in number of plays over the last ten years, according to last.fm), I just don't know how I missed this fantastic 2003 album.
All the Fall recipes are there - infectious hooks, Mark E Smith snarl over cryptic lyrics, in my book, this is ranked way up with their classic 70s and 80s albums.

I've always wondered what the songwriting process in the Fall was, with such a staff turnover. Was the music written by Smith only, or was he being propped up by excellent musicians who wanted a slice of the fun, whilst relinquishing their claim for fame ? I don't know, but I do know that they delivered here a great, in your face album. Listyguy is right, it's top heavy, but the experimental tracks are not too long and they have to be there (this being the Fall).

This one won't appear in the next Biggest Fan Album thread, this is for sure.

The Fall - The Real New Fall LP: Formerly 'Country on the Click': 7

This is indeed a Fall album. I've not dived deep enough in their discography to note what differentiates this relatively late work from their earlier ones. Maybe nothing? The Fall work best if you just let Mark E. Smith's voice guide you through whatever madness the band is playing. It can be a lot of fun in the right mindset.

Biography from Last.fm

The Living End formed in 1994 after lead singer/guitarist Chris Cheney and bassist Scott Owen were introduced to each other by their older sisters at Wheelers Hill Secondary College in Melbourne, Australia. Cheney, obsessed with 80s rockabilly group the Stray Cats, convinced Owen to learn the double bass instead of the piano and they started playing gigs under the name Runaway Boys after the title of a Stray Cats song. The group went through a succession of drummers before settling on Joe Piripitzi.

The Living End got their first big break in 1995 when, after sending a t-shirt and a demo tape to Billie Joe Armstrong, they landed a support slot in Green Day's upcoming Australian tour. After the tour, the group went into the studio to record their debut EP Hellbound which received moderate support from community radio stations.

In November 1995, the band went back into the studio to record their second EP (It's for Your Own Good which they released several months later. This recording yielded their first major radio airplay with the song From Here On In, which was placed on high rotation on the youth radio network Triple J. Shortly after the release of the second EP, drummer Joe Piripitzi left the band and was replaced with Travis Dempsey who was soon playing with the band at major festivals such as Pushover and the Falls Festival. After a year touring Australia, The Living End again headed into the studio to record something new to sell at their now very popular shows. The result was the Second Solution / Prisoner of Society double single.

Prisoner of Society quickly became a national hit and the band signed on to Modular Recordings for the release of their debut self titled album, The Living End. The album was an instant hit with Australian audiences and resulted in six Australian singles (counting the "Second Solution" release as two because both songs received major airplay). The Living End became the second-highest-selling debut rock album in Australian music history, now five times platinum.

The Roll On album in 2000 was a more creative work, but did not manage to achieve the status of their earlier album. Cheney later stated that he was trying to prove to critics that The Living End were not a band simply defined by their hit Prisoner of Society, and the album showed this by displaying other influences, as well as their traditional fast-paced rockabilly music. The album even garnered comparison, by a few critics, to seminal punk band The Clash's creative breakthrough, London Calling.

The band hit a quiet period after that during which Chris Cheney had a tragic car accident on the Great Ocean Road, rendering him unable to play for a significant period of time. He had been on the road to the house of a member of fellow Australian band Bodyjar.

In 2003, after Chris's recovery and with new drummer Andy Strachan, the band made a comeback, releasing One Said to the Other, Who's Gonna Save Us? and getting air play once again. This was followed by heavy touring (including Big Day Out) and a release of Modern ARTillery.

In late 2004, the band has released a singles collection From Here on In: The Singles 1997-2004 as well as a DVD, which included all video clips and a "supergig", collections of the band's most famous songs performed in Australia, Japan and the USA. The DVD also features the band's history- documented in interviews and home footage.

Recently, Chris performed at the 2004 ARIA awards as part of the supergroup The Wrights, featuring members of many other Australian rock bands.

Chris Cheney and Scott Owen have won the Best Guitarist and Best Bassist awards for 2004 and 2005, in the Jack Awards.

The band performs regularly in Melbourne, one performance recently was for the Channel V Music Bus at Federation Square Melbourne, Australia (15th of December 2005) which saw a capacity crowd of between 4,500 and 5,000 people attend. The event saw many under 18's get the chance to see their idols for free, and for a lucky few, the chance to sing with Chris Cheney, unplanned of course.

The Living End's fourth album, titled State of Emergency, was released on February 4 2006 and was recorded in Byron Bay after they played in the Splendour in the Grass festival. They had finished the recording and the artwork for State of Emergency in mid December 2005. The single "What's on Your Radio was released on November 20, 2005, and debuted at #9 on the ARIA singles chart. The second single, "Wake Up" was released on February 19 and debuted at #5 on the ARIA singles chart. The group is currently signed to Adeline Records, owned and run by Billie Joe and Adrianne Armstrong.

State of Emergency - 6/10

I won't complain about the genre name "pop punk" here, because this album barely fits the standard definition of that genre. It's more of a generic sounding rock album as far as I'm concerned. So while the music is decent, it's also just not something that I can see myself ever seeking out again to listen to.

69 - The Living End - State of Emergency : 8/10

I actually really like this one - it hits all the chords for me, immediate punk-pop-rock very (VERY) influenced by Green Day, but with a bit more surf influences. The first four songs are great, it tails off a bit at the end, but this is still quite good. No wonder Billie Joe Armstrong and Co asked them to open for their concerts.

I can't it the upright bass though...

The Living End - State of Emergency: 6

In initially liked this one quite a bit too, but as it went on I got less fond of it. As a pop punk record it isn't bad at all. It's well-played and catchy. Still, the melodies never become truly exceptional, the playing is more solid than memorable and the lyrics never go beyond the functional. I also felt it overstayed its welcome. 51 minutes isn't remarkably long, but it is for an album like this. I want to agree with Spiritualized that the earlier songs were better. Perhaps they are, but it might also just be that I was done with it.

Biography from Last.fm

Moderat are Modeselektor and Apparat.

Moderat's formation began back in 2002 in Berlin, Germany when Sascha Ring (aka Apparat) and Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary (aka Modeselektor) recorded an EP for the record label BPitch Control ("Auf Kosten der Gesundheit"). When it came time to begin working on an album, Moderat suddenly broke up.

Meanwhile Modeselektor set a milestone in German music history with their sophomore album, Happy Birthday!, including musicians such as Puppetmastaz, Maximo Park and Thom Yorke. Amongst a slew of remixes for the likes of Thom Yorke and Björk, Modeselektor also went on to tour with Radiohead across Japan in 2008.

Apparat, on the other hand, moved forward with his album Walls in 2007 (after his collaboration with Ellen Allien on "Orchestra of Bubbles"), taking a musical path that was more band-oriented and kept him on tour for several years running.

2008 saw the reunion of this project and the three members of Moderat went back to the studio to continue working together and finally released their 1st full album "Moderat" in April 2009. This is a monumental 'audio-visual declaration' album, which includes ten videos by Berlin's highly regarded visualists Pfadfinderei.

One step further
This one had been long-awaited since I heard first rumors and had known their great debut. I am very pleased with The Second for one particular reason especially - it is different than Moderat I. They made one step further, created something different but still undoubtedly great. What's more, I think it has more space, more ambient elements in it and gives me more freedom. It is pure and innocent(less brutal and catchy than The First) but at the same time mixed with many modern, sophisticated and melodic parts. For their creative work I have now more respect for these guys. Real artists. Thank you Moderat

Electronic music isn't really my thing. Not going to try and dissect a genre that I ultimately don't understand further than that.

I think this collaboration is far better than most IDM out there.
It's relaxed, spaced out but the two producers aren't scared of putting beautiful and sometimes dreamy vocals in the mix. Milk is amazingly good and deserves to be the highlight here.

The second Moderat collaboration one of those nice albums that only rarely really connects. The vocal song Bad Kingdom is really good, but the other sung songs don't quite manage that level. Then there is Milk, the impressive 10 minute epic at the center. What remains is relaxing, but also somewhat forgettable for me.

Biography from Last.fm

The Church is an alternative rock band which formed in Sydney, Australia in 1980. Initially linked in with neo-psychedelia acts of the period, their music later became largely defined by the interplay of guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes coupled with the abstract lyrics of bassist/singer Steve Kilbey. Their debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), earned them their first radio hit "The Unguarded Moment". They were originally signed to EMI's Parlophone label, but record company dissatisfaction led to them being dropped overseas, which limited their exposure early on.

After signing to Arista in 1988, they saw their largest international success with the album Starfish and the American Top 40 hit "Under The Milky Way" which resurfaced on the soundtrack of the cult movie "Donnie Darko". Whilst the band remain feted by their peers, subsequent commercial success proved elusive: 1990s follow-up album "Gold Afternoon Fix" failed to capitalise on their success, and the band weathered several line-up changes after its release, first losing long-term drummer Richard Ploog, then Peter Koppes following 1992s "Priest = Aura". That album baffled and confused many fans upon its release as to what band The Church was considered to be, but is now considered a seminal album and one of the most revered by Church connoisseurs. The vacant drum-stool on Priest=Aura being occupied by Jay Dee Daugherty of Arista labelmate Patti Smiths group, and it was produced by Gavin MacKillop of Moose.

Reduced to a two-piece, Kilbey & Willson-Piper re-grouped with the assistance of drummer/producer Tim Powles to record 1994's "Sometime Anywhere", concluding their obligations to the Arista and Mushroom labels. The commercial decline, combined with the Church being ignored again by a music press more focused on the Nineties' music trends, could have brought about the demise of the band, had it not coincided with the breakthrough of the internet, thus enabling direct communication from the band to its passionate cult fanbase.

This brought about a new beginning for The Church, with Peter Koppes rejoining the band for recording 1996s "Magician Among The Spirits". The band (with Koppes back into the fold, and Powles now as the permanent drummer ), hit a re-newed creative surge and with regained selfconfidence, released "Hologram Of Baal" 2 years later, and toured Australia, the USA and Europe.

The first decade of the 21st century found the band releasing severeal highly critically acclaimed albums, like 2002's aptly named "After Everything Now this" and 2003's "Forget Yourself", the latter breaking new ground with bandmembers swapping instruments in the recording process. Live performances stray from high profile events like the 03 concerts at Sydney Opera House and the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, to low-profile gigs for smaller audiences, often confusing old 80s fans, surprised to find the band still playing, wrongly assuming the band just being one in the never-ending string of reunion acts.

2009's album "Untitled#23" marked yet another highlight.. its essence represented in just 10 songs, and with a strong less-is-more approach, the albums core identity being on par with Starfish, it also finds Steve Kilbey breaking new ground as a vocalist.

2010 saw their 30th anniversary, with extensive touring in the US and Australia. Their unique position and importance in the australian music scene was recognized with an ARIA award.

Their album, "Further Deeper", was released in 2014, and "man woman life death infinity" in 2017.

One of the most aptly titled albums in rock history! The only other time I've seen the word used as an album title is with Fairport Convention and their BBC recordings. The title referred to how at that moment in history, Fairport was at the peak of its powers (hard to argue, but the album is mostly of interest to fans); by contrast, The Church album title is literal, as the "heyday" is captured in the music itself, as if the band was acknowledging this as their best work. As I hear it, the discography of The Church is like one giant wave, and Heyday is the peak of the wave. The early stuff is generally forgettable with the occasional flicker, while Seance, the previous LP, lays the compositional groundwork for this album; its just a little hard to tell as the production is atrocious on that album. Perhaps to atone for the bad vibes of the previous experience, production is on point for the entirety of Heyday. The driving sound of the opening Myrrh sets up the clean, mid-eighties rock vibe with a minor key riff and a sly chorus. The overall consistency of the writing seems to come out of left-field given the band's history, but there are no bad cuts (even the instrumental that closes side one is interesting). Other highlights include Tristesse, Columbus, and the galloping Tantalized. Another personal favorite is Night of Light with its weaving, concluding string section. After this album, the band issued a solid followup, Starfish, that had scattered moments that matched the expectations set by this album, and then honestly every attempt to check out anything after by the band had me skipping tracks 30 seconds in. The band makes for a very interesting study into how commerce impacts art, as it seems like these guys were totally fucked by the mechanics of the industry. This album is a testament to their undeniable talent.

71 - The Church - Heyday (1986): 8.5
Thanks, CoD, for this trip down memory lane. I hadn't listened to this album in what must have been like three decades, but remember it well... and fondly. There are points where the production has that '80's "tinny" sound, but the songs - especially the best ones (imo) like "Columbus" and "Tantalized" - can't be denied. This is a solid album with virtually no filler... the sound at the time was vibrant and vital (though the sheen may have worn off a bit over the years).

I saw The Church on tour for this album in April 1986, opening for Echo & The Bunnymen at the University of Penn. It was a relatively short set, but they put on a fine performance (I actually recorded the show and have a really bad audience tape in my garage somewhere). They were a band on the verge of breaking through and we could all see it. I remember listening to the cassette of this in my car quite frequently through the early '90's, then kind of forgot about it... we tend to focus on "Starfish" but shouldn't forget the gems on here... so glad it's been re-introduced into my repertoire!

Heyday - 7/10

Despite the lack of a song as great as "Under the Milky Way," this album is probably about equal to Starfish. That is to say, it's a solid album if not one I'd consider a favorite.

The Mid-Eighties were an endless and exhilarating period of musical discovery for me. It seemed like every week a new artist would grab my attention and not let go. The Church first grabbed my attention with "The Unguarded Moment", a song I first heard on a college radio station. I loved that song and sought out "Of Skins and Heart" but nothing on that album approached "The Unguarded Moment" so The Church could have easily got lost in the shuffle.

So enter 1986. I would religiously head to my favorite record store after each paycheck. One day after entering, the store owner put on "Heyday" and about a minute into "Myrrh" I knew one album I would be going home with. Merging neo-psychedelia with genuine pop hooks "Heyday" immediately captured my attention and featured what would become some of my All-Time favorite tracks from the band. "Myrrh", "Columbus", "Already Yesterday" and "Tantalized" remain favorites to this day. But what really makes this album stand out is it's consistency. This is a band that had found it's sound.

Of course that meant the "Destination" would soon become clear. "Under the Milky Way" became one of the biggest songs of the eighties. While I remained a fan of the Church over the years, nothing quite approached the first time I heard "Myrrh".

The Church - Heyday (7.5/10)

This is a fine, very fine mid-80s jangle pop album.
The Church trademarks are all there - good singing, crystalline guitars, emotional songwriting. I can see why these guys opened for Echo & the Bunnymen as they sound like a gentler version of the seminal Liverpool band.
Indeed, "Under The Milky Way" would take over as the reference for the band, but they proved with Heyday that there was initially more to them than THAT song.

The Church - Heyday: 6
This is fine and I can understand people falling for it, but to me it hardly becomes more than pleasant background listening. This is jangle pop with a dream pop feel. It never grabs me as much as I would like. One track does grab me more than others and weirdly it is the one instrumental: Happy Hunting Ground. It sounds like a good fit for a soundtrack of one of those innocent, youth adventure movies of the eighties. Think E.T.

71. The Church - Heyday (1985) 9/10

My third 9/10 on the game, after "Selda" and "Moffou." An album I loved when it was released (by the way, spiritualized, the original Australian release was in 1985), and this was a time without shortage of jangle-pop masterpieces ("The Queen Is Dead," "Life Richs Pageant"). Not in my Top 250 albums (but surely in an hypothetical Top 500) but with the song "Already Yesterday" in my Top 250 songs, my favourite use of the Pachelbel's Canon chord progression in pop music.

I want to be objective when talking about this album, but damn its pretty hard. That's not to say that I should love this album based on concept; neither new wave, dream pop, synth rock, or whatever you want to call this (dream pop would be my best choice I think) have ever been my favorite genres. Its pretty simple: this album just hits me. It always seems to strike some sort of profound resonance, in a variety of atmospheres even. I can pump this up at max volume and cruise down the PCH which gives it a sort of euphoric tint, but its also equally suited to lying in my hammock and looking out at the sky, or even skateboarding to class on a rainy day. I love this album.

Its hard to take something you appreciate and enjoy so much and then move to the next step of asking why. Alas, such is the work of the critic. Thankfully, this album gives me tons of reasons to support my adoration (and why I believe anyone else can feel similarly).

As far as I understand there are two key players on this album: singer George Lewis, Jr. and producer Chris Taylor (also the bassist and producer of one of my favorite bands, Grizzly Bear). I'm not sure who contributed what where and all that stuff so I will just speak of it all as coming from one unit. I will say though that the primary similarity between Grizzly Bear's breathtaking 2009 LP Veckatimest and Forget is the depth of the sound and the incredible amount of space that each noise is able to inhabit. I'm guessing this comes from Chris Taylor's brilliant production. He just has a way of lodging sounds into places that allows everything to reach its potential. Overall, there is a very dark, empty feel to the whole thing. Its nearly haunting. Also similarly to Grizzly Bear, things unfold and burst out in doled proportions. They don't just bash out hooks, the beautiful melodies and counterpoints are given time to blossom and shine that much more brilliantly. And shine they do.

As for the songs themselves, there is no lack of brilliance there either. I would have no trouble going into a detailed expose on each one, as there's something to love everywhere here. For time's sake I'll say a word about my favorites.

I Can't Wait: The best song on the album in my opinion and, so far, far and away my favorite song of the year. There are a few things that are simply brilliant about this song. First off, my god those whining synth lines, they just simply kill me. They fill the space between vocals in the perfect way, creating a rising tension. Then there's the central juxtaposition: a sad song balanced by a buoyant, bouncy bass line and light, jittery drums. This creates a wonderful tension with Lewis Jr.'s lyrics, baritone vocals, the dreamy synth, and the raucous guitar strikes. It all creates one hell of a maelstrom. And just when you think its settled into a groove, boom that ending coda just slams the thing into overdrive. There's just so many noises to absorb. By the time the last bass melody hits it seems like a triumphant last moment. Oh yeah, did I mention it also has a MESMERIZING baroque-ish verse melody? Geez. A masterpiece.

Castles In The Snow: The bass. No way around it. It suffocates and takes over everything in this song with its unending stomp. There are beautiful splashes of guitar and some distorted keys, but the bass drives this thing. The spare rhythm is also a huge draw. The whole song seems to wait for those rolling drum lines. The lyrics here are also simply chilling. "Everything I see looks like gold, Everything I touch turns cold" is a haunting line. I dislike talking about lyrics too much for I find them to be a very personal experience, but thats pretty good stuff I should think by any account. Yet still, at the core of this thing is a brilliant song. You could play this on acoustic guitar and it would still hold up pretty well. The chord progression is pretty brilliant and the fact that the production is so damn good, well thats just what makes it that much better.

For Now: Again there's so many sounds to talk about that I could go on for hours. The lyrics is where I'll start. "Is there anything as quiet as a night alone with you" can be taken in a depressing light, but I think its a very cherished moment. And taken against this very dark backdrop it creates a heartrending opposition. The moment had to end, as all moments do. There's also about 5 brilliant melodies working in this song. They are thrown together in different combinations in a way I can only describe as virtuosic. The guitar line is also a wonderful addition, but the keys really break this thing open 2:30 through. The sound is simply intoxicating.

Slow: Well, similarly to many of the songs on this album, the bass plays a central role in this song. The bass line just never leaves my head, its simply brilliant. The way it works with the melodies and chord progressions turns my head in circles. The guitars on this song are also a key. The palm muted twisting lines in the verse serve to build the tension. And then out of nowhere a string synth line just takes over in what is undoubtedly the most beautiful moment on the album. And then its built up one more time in another brilliant climax. Lewis, Jr.'s singing is also phenomenal in this song. He both contributes to the immense tension of the verses and blows out that climax of a chorus. A brilliant pop song, by any measure.

As you can no doubt tell, I could go on for hours about this nuanced, intricate, and captivating music. There are just so many things going on in every track and they are placed together with such perfection that it would take days to write about it all in any sort of detail. Wonderful bass lines throughout, intricate and well-placed rhythms, beautiful melodies, jaw-dropping synths, sneakily good guitar lines and solos, a voice that fits it all perfectly, and lyrics that rarely disappoint. How can you go wrong? Simply put, this is almost definitely my favorite album of the year, and for that matter, my favorite album that I've heard in quite a few years (maybe even my favorite made in my 21 years of life). 41 minutes of the most lush, intoxicating sounds I've ever heard. I can only hope that everyone finds an album this unequivocally enjoyable; and hopefully this album can be that album for many others too.

Forget - 7/10

I know we like to talk about "borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s" in modern music, but the synthpop love affair in indie music has been going on for like a decade at this point, as demonstrated here. There's also tracks here that you could convince me are actually Peter Gabriel. I'm not against the 80s revival, so I don't mind its presence here. Overall this is a fine album.

72. Twin Shadow - Forget (2010): 6

Not my thing, but great production and some cool beats make it an interesting listen.

Thanks!

Twin Shadow - Forget: 7
I do hear some eighties influences here and especially Peter Gabriel, but the influences aren't overt. Forget creates its own ambience, which if rarely truly captivating is very nice just to bathe in. It's a relaxing record.

70. Moderat - II: 5.5/10

If they opened an album with the last 2 tracks here and took that sound and feel as an inspiration for the rest of the album they could have something special.
