Biography from Last.fm

As Gazelle Twin, producer, composer, and visual artist Elizabeth Bernholz explores 21st century dystopia with uncompromising electronic music and striking imagery. Her 2011 debut album, The Entire City, introduced her prowess as a producer as she transformed layers of murky loops and her classically trained vocals into a haunted metropolis of sounds and memories. Her skills were just as apparent on 2014's visceral Unflesh, which emphasized the industrial leanings of her music as well as the importance of costumes in her visual presentation (to personify the discomfort in the music, she wore her old school gym clothes on the album cover). She linked sound and vision even more closely on 2018's Pastoral, an unflinching depiction of the intolerance lurking within English culture that blended the traditional (English folk music and garb) with the contemporary (assaultive electronics and sneakers). The innate theatricality of Gazelle Twin's work made Bernholz a natural for productions like her 2016 stage adaptation of J.G. Ballard's novel Kingdom Come and for score and soundtrack work like 2020's Welcome to the Blumhouse: Nocturne and the following year's The Power. Though Gazelle Twin's personas and concepts change continually, Bernholz's commitment to unnerving her listeners and reframing their perspectives is a constant of her work.

A fan's review
gavin Jul 01 2016

Gazelle Twin is a fascinating electronic artist, and I feel bad that only now have I caught on to her bizarre music and aesthetic. Musically, it floats somewhere within the industrial-electro / post-dubstep / synth-pop / trip-hop Venn diagram, slipping a Portion Control beat into Pearson Sound’s production values to create some blackened Björk remix. Sounds cool, right? But “Gazelle Twin” the person takes on this totally unique persona that mixes chav streetwear with Slipknot scare tactics (Google a photo!), resulting in the perfect gateway drug for a Marilyn Manson fan who is trying to get into Throbbing Gristle. The few intelligible lyrics seem to deal with dark familial issues, and the tracks that don’t have me dancing have me looking over my shoulder, almost positive I’m about to be kidnapped or hatcheted. All this and “Anti Body” is one of the sickest dance cuts I’ve heard this year… and the label is Canadian! You just can’t make this stuff up.

Gazelle Twin would be better suited for Halloween than for the Christmas period. Elizabeth Bernholz is a musician from Brighton who makes electronic art pop with a gothic element. It sounds gloomy and mysterious. She uses synthesizer loops, processed sounds and whispery vocals. Fascination with death and decay are themes. Favorite tracks: Unflesh, Exorcise.

Unflesh - 6/10

The music is sufficiently dark and creepy, so I have to give credit for the mood that are created here. With that said, the songs aren't as strong as I'd really like; there are only a few that I really enjoyed.

I really quite like this album.
Inventine electronics, a menacing atmosphere, it's almost a darker version of Billie Eilish.

Definite replay value.

Trying to catch up after skipping the week of Christmas:

Roscoe Mitchell - L-R-G / The Maze / S II Examples: 5

I watched the video mentioned in the RYM quote by Spiritualized. In it we indeed see L-R-G performed by three musicians, each switching instrument every few seconds and playing it for another few seconds. The low audio and video quality didn't help, but watching this performance actually made me appreciate the piece less instead of more. It is already a long track, but seeing the process behind it makes it almost interminable, while also highlighting the absurdity and dare I say even pretensions behind it. I guess an experiment with many short isolated bursts of instrumentals had to be done by someone at some point, but I didn't find it engaging. The studio version comes off as a little less obnoxious, but it is far from a favorite of mine.

The Maze is a lot better. The approach seems the same, but the final effect seems more soothing. Quite nice for an avant-garde song. On SII Examples however, we see this small burst playing being used for a more noodling and rambling style. It gets close to obnoxious again. I always hate giving lower scores to experimental works, if for no other reason that I appreciate the daring, but I wasn't quite sold on this one, outside of The Maze.

Gazelle Twin - Unflesh: 7
Only one song here is named Exorcise, but it might have been all of them. This is electronic music to drive demons away. As such, it is atmospheric, foreboding and very immediate. In contrast to Spiritualized I don't think this is all that mysterious. Rather the opposite: it's droning its meaning into you. Some tracks seem to be stuck in concept, but mostly this is overpowering music.

Gazelle Twin - Unflesh 8.0 (my #18 for 2014) I was dazzled by this bewitching album, not least by the beat she makes from the checkout scans in Belly of the Beast, which could've come off as gimmicky but was oddly haunting.

My highlights: Belly of the Beast, Anti Body, Exorcise, Still Life

This month's highlights ranked:
Belly of the Beast
The Maze
(Tili)Aden Osamnet
Anti Body
Exorcise
El Huria Telitwar
Still Life
L-R-G Part II
Imidiwan Ma Tennam

Biography from Last.fm

Irish producer Seamus Malliagh makes extremely giddy, hyperkinetic electronic music as Iglooghost, throwing juke/footwork, anime, IDM, hip-hop, and pop into a blender and hitting infinity. The restlessly creative artist's tracks are extremely dense, fast-moving, and cartoonish, loaded with complex beats, high-pitched voices, and rapid-fire samples. While this sounds like it could easily end up being a nauseating sugar rush, his tracks have an advanced pop sensibility and focus that keeps them both exciting and memorable, and they never come close to sounding predictable or conventional.

Iglooghost first surfaced as a producer for underground rappers like Milo and Kool A.D. around 2013. In 2014, he released two limited cassettes, Treetunnels and Twenteen, which showcased his vivid, colorful take on abstract hip-hop beatmaking. Following 2015's Milk Empire, a collaboration with California rapper Mr. Yote, Iglooghost (who was only 18 at the time) signed to Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. His first release for the label was the digital EP Chinese Nü Yr, based on a video game-like story about a gelatinous, amorphous worm named Xiāngjiāo. Even though the release appeared on Brainfeeder, a label often associated with left-field hip-hop and jazz, its sound was a lot closer to the pop-influenced abstract electronic music released by labels like PC Music, Orange Milk, and Noumenal Loom.

Neō Wax Bloom
Iglooghost's second Brainfeeder release (and vinyl debut) was the 2016 EP Little Grids, which partially continued the story of Xiāngjiāo while introducing new characters, and included a guest appearance by singer Charlotte Day Wilson as well as a remix by Slugabed. Later in the year, Iglooghost remixed Abra's single "Crybaby." Neō Wax Bloom, Iglooghost's debut full-length, arrived in 2017, further expanding the concepts established on the previous two EPs.

New and exciting
Unlike anything you've heard before the symphony of noises present in each and every song lead to a truly unpredictable and unique experimental electronic album. The fast paced and disjointed beats, spacey and futuristic synths, punchy bass create for a new exciting take on the many free jazz instrumentals throughout the album. The heavily distorted polar opposite vocals with high pitched childlike singing and deep bellowing rap verses only adds to the weirdness and unique sound.

Neō Wax Bloom - 5/10

Not my favorite style of music. I did kind of like some of the fast rapping that was featured here, but overall this kind of electronic stuff just doesn't do it for me.

Part of the narrative surrounding Iglooghost centres on the lore for his projects, so here's the booklet he provided to that end for Neō Wax Bloom https://i.imgur.com/cWILlXM_d.jpg?maxwi ... ity=medium

No idea if that enhances the album because I only thought to look for it now...anyway, my score's 6.2 (my #40 for 2017)

My highlights: Super Ink Burst, Peanut Choker, White Gum
All I got inside is vacancy!

Thanks! This was actually what I guessed was the story behind the album.

IglooGhost - Neō Wax Bloom: 8

When I started listening I immediately guessed this wouldn't be for everyone. I found myself warming up to it rather quickly, though. Yes, it very strange and more hyperactive than most people would want, but it does create it's own little world that I find appealing. Oddly, the more the songs go into overdrive, the more I like them. There was a risk that it would all become a little too much for its own good, but somehow the quality keeps up along with the pace. The songs are varied in their way too. In the end it all sounded a bit like some kind of looney indie game music, although I'm not sure what the gameplay would be like. Heck, I swear that on Teal Yomi/ Olivine the cast of Animal Crossing was joining in. Regardless, this project feels truly unique and I could see myself returning to it.

IglooGhost - Neō Wax Bloom: 5

Compared to the previous entry, Gazelle Twin, I find this electronic music entry a bit tedious - far too chaotic. Whilst the beats are enjoyable, the cartoonish and goofy voices detract from the main interest in the music, the aforementioned beats.

Biography from Last.fm

High Fashion was a dance and R&B group from the early 80s. They released two albums on Capitol Records. The group's original line-up included Eric McClinton, Meli'sa Morgan, and Alyson Williams. All members had a background in the music business. Eric had worked as a vocalist with The Mike Theodore orchestra. Meli'sa had sung on several albums by Kleeer and was part of the short-lived group Shades of Love. Alyson is the daughter of the Jazz musician Bobby Booker and had provided background vocals for several albums by Unlimited Touch.

Their first album, Feelin' Lucky included two singles that were relatively successful on the Billboard Soul Charts: "Feelin' Lucky Lately" and "Hold On." In 1983 Meli'sa Morgan left the group and was replaced by jazz vocalist Marcella Allen. Their second album, Make Up Your Mind, was released in 1983, but it did not sell as well as their debut. The group disbanded some time around 1985. Alyson Williams went on to pursue a successful career as an R&B singer.

A fan's review
vanguard Apr 16 2021

Fred Petrus & Mauro Malavasi's High Fashion project moved into 1983 with a funk as angular as the heart on the cover of Make Up Your Mind. American R&B was even more front and center - notably synth funk.

Meli'sa Morgan who had put her stylish imprint on Feelin' Lucky had moved on. Eric McClinton and Alyson Williams were back joined by Marcella Allen on background vocals.

High Fashion was not a band the same way that Change and The Brooklyn, Bronx & Queens Band were at this time - and were still a studio project.

Nonetheless once again it was a great concentration of musical talent from Modena to Manhattan.

There is not a beast of a track to the level of "You're The Winner" or "Feeling Lucky Lately" from their first album. Nevertheless, this is a very consistent album with not a bad or boring song in the bunch. Williams and McLinton shine on the vocal back and forth of "Show Me". With a little polish on the lyrics this could have been a big one. "Break Up" is the most boogie oriented track and the top track for me. Williams stars on her own on "You Satisfy My Needs".

Despite all these nice tracks, Petrus and Co. made up their mind to fold this project. Fortunately we've been blessed with 2 strong albums of soulful dance music.

Make Up Your Mind - 7/10

"Break Up" is awesome, but I liked the funk grooves that infect so many of the tracks on the album. Having only 8 tracks allows each one to have the space it needs to breathe and establish a good foundation in the rhythm.

High Fashion - Make Up Your Mind: 3
I'm sorry to Moonbeam for always giving low ratings to his albums, but I'm afraid we just don't share much of a taste. Make Up Your Mind doesn't change things. To me this is an almost exhaustingly dull album. The repetitive synths sound way too thin to even feel groovy. There is absolutely no layer to the sound either, so it feels like I'm listening to the same cheap-synths without relief, making 44 minutes seem very long. The only change is that the songs seem to become worse as it goes along. At first at least the singers seem to be trying. By the final song even they seem to have given up.

I feel the same as Rob, I don't want to have to pile the bad grades on Moonbeam's albums, but this kind of 80s synth-funk is really not my cup of tea, it's either not funky enough or too many synths drown the songwriting. The 80s production adds another cringy layer.

There's plenty of 80s stuff I like, even keyboard driven, but this is not it.

Biography from Last.fm

Ray Edward "Eddie" Cochran (October 3, 1938 - April 17, 1960) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. With a charismatic voice that could switch effortlessly between smooth ballads and raucous rockabilly, Cochran epitomized the rebellious '50s rocker. Although killed in a tragic accident at the age of 21, the influence of his brief career, and life, was immeasurable, having inspired many of the greatest artists of the '60s. Cochran's distinctively rough, bass-driven singles (such as "C'mon Everybody", "Somethin' Else", and "Summertime Blues") have granted him the title of "grandfather of punk" by luminaries of the genre.

Ray Edward Cochran was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota; however, as his parents were from Oklahoma, he considered himself an Oklahoman, and introduced himself as such in interviews. He took music lessons in school, but eventually quit the band to play drums. Rather than take piano lessons, Cochran began learning guitar, playing the country music he heard on the radio. As time went on, Cochran moved to Los Angeles, California in 1953. Together with Hank Cochran, Eddie formed The Cochran Brothers, though the two shared no relation.

Around the same time, Cochran worked as a session musician, but aspired to be a songwriter and artist in his own right, and recorded a demo with songwriting partner and future manager, Jerry Capeheart. Cochran's first notable foray into the public eye was as one of the many performing artists featured in the musical comedy film The Girl Can't Help It starring Jayne Mansfield, eventually resulting in a recording contract with Liberty. He would follow up on this appearance by appearing in several films of the same genre. He also performed as a support act for such stars as Gene Vincent and Little Richard, who were among Cochran's co-stars in the aforementioned film.

For his recordings, Cochran often used experimental techniques that would later become part and parcel for other recording artists, notably recording numerous overdubs in order to create the rich, distinctive guitar sound for "Summertime Blues" and "C'mon Everybody". "Twenty Flight Rock", the song Cochran performed in The Girl Can't Help It, was the very first song a young Paul McCartney played for John Lennon as his audition for Lennon's group, The Quarrymen, which would later metamorphose into The Beatles.

Cochran was killed in an automobile accident in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England during a tour of Britain with Gene Vincent. Vincent and Cochran's fiancee, who were both in the car, survived the crash. Scholars have noted that, somewhat eerily, Cochran's last single release in his lifetime was "Three Steps to Heaven", although the song's lyrical context has nothing to do with death. Cochran's death occurred little over a year after the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, to whom he paid tribute in his recording of the song "Three Stars", which remained unreleased until 1966.

A majority of Cochran's recorded legacy would be released posthumously; in his lifetime, only one album, Singin' to My Baby (1957), was ever released. Perhaps owing to the brevity of his career, Cochran never attained the same star status as other rockers of the era; however, his lyrical themes of teenage desires and rebellion, being somewhat more morose and raucous than his contemporaries, had a profound influence on many of the greatest artists of the '60s and '70s, such as The Beatles, The Who, and The Rolling Stones.

(Translated from German by Google !)
I have no idea why Eddie Cochran has been so forgotten these days. Of course, it can be related to his early death, but everyone knows Buddy Holly these days. Well, he had funny glasses.

As you can easily tell from the title of this album, it's a best of and it shows that Cochran definitely had the potential to be a big one. Not only could he write original, rousing songs ("C'mon Everybody", "Summertime Blues", or the brilliant "Somethin' Else"), he also sang with heart and conviction and a voice that didn't sound like his early 20s.

Cochran had enough brilliant songs for a 5-star album, the compilation isn't quite as good here (too many mediocre ballads; only "I Remember" is convincing here), but still a highlight of early rock music.

12 of His Biggest Hits - 7/10

I'm not really sure how to rate a greatest hits album, but I've also never loved Eddie Cochran. The songs everyone knows here, like "Summertime Blues" and "C'mon Everybody," are pretty good though.

I think this is one of those borderline cases, like a lot of early rock 'n roll albums, where most of these songs are singles that didn't appear on an album yet, which makes some count it as an original album, while others count it as a compilation. RYM always goes for compilation in these cases. Acclaimed Music makes quite a few exceptions on this rule, with a lot of fifties/ early sixties rock & roll albums.

Eight to go...

55. Future - Pluto (2012) - 5
Overall a fine listen, and makes for decent background noise. The lyrics I understood weren't super original (oh my god, this rapper wants to be Tony Montana? How novel) but the songs had some good flow and I do enjoy Future's voice.

The album never did anything to progress beyond mild enjoyment for me but it is a decent debut.

Eddie Cochran - 12 of His Biggest Hits: 7
This album was released just a few days before Cochran's death. As a compilation I wouldn't rank it too high. With a running time of under 30 minutes and some of his most significant tracks missing (including his breakthrough Twenty Flight Rock). There are by now more complete Cochran compilations out there.
As an album proper it does make sense though. It does have a rather peculiar approach to sequencing: an uptempo song or a rocker is always followed immediately by a downtempo song or a ballad. Sure, more albums have been made that alternate between tempo's, but I don't think I ever seen an example were it is so obvious. It is a bit of a mixed bag. Most songs a fine to great (Summertime Blues is a masterpiece of the era and there are Somethin' Else and C'Mon Everybody too), but there are some duds, mostly in the slow department. The oddly religious Tell Me Why for example or the very, very slow Lovin' Time. Still the good definitely outweighs the bad.

I would also have loved to praise Eddie Cochran for having invented the synth funk genre, but sadly in his enthusiasm he seems to have forgotten all about the synths.

High Fashion - Make up Your Mind 6.8 (my #13 for 1983, kicking Sharon Redd down a place)
My highlights: Break up, Make up Your Mind, You Satisfy My Needs

If only this maintained the standard it begins with! What I find synth-funk too often lacks- the low-end, in the actual basslines of course, but in the vocals as well- the opening two tracks make up for with aplomb!

Eddie Cochran - 12 of His Biggest Hits 6.2 (my #15 for 1960)
My highlights: Summertime Blues, Somethin' Else, C'mon Everybody

This month's highlights ranked:
Break up
Summertime Blues
Somethin' Else
Super Ink Burst
Make up Your Mind
Peanut Choker
C'mon Everybody
White Gum
You Satisfy My Needs

64. Eddie Cochran - 12 of His Biggest Hits (6.5/10)

As rock'n'roll goes, you can't go really wrong with this compilation. It has all the hits and serves as a good reminder of the talent of the parted-too-early rock'n'roll star.
Aside from the three classics, you get a huge Elvis vibe though, as not much separates the King from Cochrane. Not sure who influenced who but both are engaging.

We all know our Moonbeam, 80s afficionado, Prince super fan. Who knew that there also is a jazz buff in there ?
It's also an opportunity to listen to the sax player who collaborated on one of the 2021 AOY contenders.

Biography from Last.fm

Pharoah Sanders (b. 1940) is a U.S. jazz saxophonist.

Sanders was born on 13th October 1940 in Little Rock, Arkansas, under the name Farrell Sanders. He began his professional career playing tenor saxophone in Oakland, California.

Sanders moved to New York City in 1962. He received his nickname "Pharoah" from Sun Ra, with whom Sanders performed. He came to prominence playing with John Coltrane's band starting in 1965, as Coltrane began experimenting with the music which would soon become known as avant-garde jazz.

Although he developed a slightly different style from Coltrane, Sanders was strongly influenced by their collaboration together. Sanders was also greatly influenced by Coltrane's earlier works (in which Sanders did not collaborate), particularly A Love Supreme. Spiritual elements such as the chanting in A Love Supreme would later show up in many of Sanders' own works. Sanders would also go on to produce much free jazz, being influenced by his free jazz collaborations with Coltrane, particularly Coltrane's most notable free-jazz work, Ascension (1965), as well as their dual-tenor recording Meditations (1965).

In 1968 he participated in Mike Mantler & Carla Bley's JCOA: Jazz Composer's Orchestra Association album Communications featuring Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Larry Coryell and Gato Barbieri. This solo has been referred to by John Zorn and others as the most intense and inspiring free tenor solo ever put to tape.

In the 1970s, Sanders pursued his own recordings and continued to work with the likes of Alice Coltrane on her Journey in Satchidananda album.

In 1994 he travelled to Morocco to record with master Gnawa musician Maleem Mahmoud Ghania, resulting in the Bill Laswell-produced The Trance of Seven Colours. Sanders continued to work with Laswell, Jah Wobble, and others on the albums Message from Home (1996) and Save Our Children (1998).

Sanders is known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound".

A fan's review
yerblues Oct 12 2013

Pharoah Sanders' best album may be Black Unity. Boasting one single thirty-seven minute track split over two sides of vinyl, the album injects elements of fusion jazz into Sanders' Afrocentric but more broadly multicultural aesthetic. Picking up where he left off with the wonderful 1970 effort Deaf Dumb Blind (Summun Bukmun Umyun), Sanders' own resonant tenor saxophone mostly fades into the sidelines on this album, highlighting his instincts as a bandleader. Complex polyrhythms are generated by drummers Billy Hart and Norman Connors, along with Sanders and Lawrence Killian on balafon and other percussive instruments. The dual basses of Cecil McBee and an upstart Stanley Clarke give this music a timeless elasticity few other records have. This is groovy, heady music that shifts the emphasis of Sanders' wily musical catharsis from his wailing tenor sax to his ensemble. Though certain parts of this record resemble the collective improvisations found on John Coltrane's Ascension, this is a variant of free jazz that bares little resemblance to the mid-1960s expression of it.

56. Kim Wilde - Close (1988) - 8
I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed this, given that I'm not like a huge fan of her songs I do know. I like her voice, the songs are really energetic and I don't mind the "80s sound" that it has.

EDIT: Adding the next album too

57. Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels (1989) - 8
If I was surprised to like the previous album, this was an even bigger one. I really don't like O Superman and had some trepidation over this listen. Went for it anyway - and it blew me away with being a very fun. almost-but-not-quite pop album. Some of the songs remind me of Talking Heads (especially Monkey's Paw), so that helps.

Black Unity - 8/10

I've been wanting to listen to more of Pharoah Sanders' music, so this was a much appreciated entry into this game. And I wasn't disappointed, this was a great album. Sanders is as great on the sax as ever, but the bass grooves here were a nice, unexpected wrinkle. They really help to elevate the sound.

Indeed a very good album. The groovy approach keeps this relatively accessible or at least easy on the ears, despite being free jazz. It also feels warmer than your average jazz album, somehow.

Already his fourth nomination - can this one do better than the 28th place Krzysztof Penderecki's St Luke Passion ?

Sean McCann is a drone artist and a sound sculptor based in Los Angeles, California. McCann continues to establish himself in the circle of drone musicians since his wake in 2008. His vision is shaped by his approach, creating richly textured ambient drones and blissful synthscapes, each track with a unique instrumental axis. McCann's orchestration has varied from banjo, violin, piano, electric guitar, to synthesizer and a plethora of other techniques throughout his catalog. McCann makes the transition from his field recordings to his improvisations like a drop into the abyss, fulfilling an amorphous shape to the loose fitting flow of his work."

A mournful sigh. Not solitary, but humble - a gathering of only the closest. A time withdrawn from outside cares, from the immediate peril of death and life, even as it draws from these extremes. The tender, stripped privacy explores both, and leaves but awe.

Music for a Private Ensemble - 6/10

This is decent, but a lot of modern classical doesn't appeal to me in the same that way the best classical music of the earlier centuries does. (And of course there's some survivorship bias there, since we only listen to the best of the best from those eras).

Sean McCann - Music for a Private Ensemble: 5
Sonofsamiam usually has some of the more exciting entries in this game, but not this time. As a modern classical piece with drone influences I felt this is a minor work. Nothing about it is bad, but it never felt particularly captivating or interesting, except maybe the chanting vocals near the end of the final track. It's probably one of those albums where in a year time I'll see it on the list and wonder "what was that?"

I for one find this Sonofsamiam nomination far easier on my ears than the usual free / improvisation jazz we are familiar with in these parts.
Clearly this is not as much of as an earworm than other styles offered in this game, but this is good classical music with a bit of a dissonant edge, at least for the long first track. It has replay value, if only for a cool evening reading your favorite novel.

Please note this is a deluxe version on Spotify - the first 10-11 tracks are from the original album

Biography from Last.fm

Motörhead was an English heavy metal band formed in June 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister, who was the sole constant member, guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox. The band are often considered a precursor to the new wave of British heavy metal, which re-energised heavy metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Though several guitarists and drummers have played in Motörhead, most of their best-selling albums and singles feature the work of Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor on drums and "Fast" Eddie Clarke on guitars.

Motörhead released 22 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums, and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.

Motörhead are typically classified as heavy metal, and their fusion of punk rock into the genre helped to pioneer speed metal and thrash metal. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".

Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. From the mid-1970s onward, however, Lemmy insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He has said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound.

Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's classic lineup (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

5.00 stars

dedicated to all the angels in hell...
Recorded at Newcastle, Runton and Leeds (no actual Hammersmith material here), and the first of approximately 1,923 live Motörhead releases, No Sleep finds the classic lineup at the top of their game. The record is a landmark pile of brute force, eventually peaking at #1 in the UK, a collection of paradigm-destroying, whiskey-swilling odes the female posterior largely responsible for the band’s ubiquitous presence that has outlived them all (Fast Eddie was the last to pass in 2018) and will continue to represent everything bullet-belted, parochial, and tight-trousered for decades to come.

The performances are tight and groovy, Lem’s bass roaring like a roadsaw in every track (stuff from the first album like “Motörhead ” sounds like a wrecking ball compared with the garagey Speedy Keen studio originals). The man’s charm is indisputable, particularly in the iconic blue-collar poetry of “We are the Road Crew”, dedicated to ‘a fine body of men’, testament to how unpretentious and authentic this bunch really were. I still get goosebumps when he yells “STAND UP STRAIGHT” just before the solo in “Metropolis”.

Of course, I’m gonna nitpick the track selection. “Capricorn”? Where is “Damage Case”? Only one track from the Bomber record? Eh, what’s the point – this is a record and a band at the center of my musical universe. RIP Lem, Phil, Eddie. You’ve left a permanent scar on the face of popular music . Look at that cover - how badass was that bomber rig anyway? Fuhgetaboutit

Um my views?
Ngl haven’t listened to this one in a LONG time and have since completely changed my categorization of albums and list making process.
I will say, Motörhead is a super fun metal band! I love Ace of Spaxes
