AMF Top songs of the 1980s!

Post by Moonbeam »

After a glorious celebration of the 1980s in 2019, I am now ready to present the results of the song poll. A total of 300 songs qualified for the final round. I will present the top 200, and then provide the entire list at the end.

A huge thank you to our 38 voters, which is up from 31 from the last time we did the 80s poll, and up from the most recent decade polls as well. Woo hoo!

The presentation of the top 200 will consist of the following:

1. Points: I had to abandon the SRS scoring system I planned, because it turns out it doesn't yield a solution when every item plays every other item exactly once, as I had intended! As such, I have used the scoring system that is present in the Album Ranker program. In essence, a big 300 x 300 matrix was created. Based on the ranked lists, I could then fill each row of the matrix with the number of wins against the other songs. In other words, if the song in row 1 in the matrix finished higher than the song in row 2 on 10 lists, the entry in the 1st row and 2nd column was set to 10. This Win/Loss matrix was then raised to the 8th power (as in the Album Ranking program), and the ratio of this matrix over its transpose determined the final points, after applying the natural logarithm. The effect of this is that each song is given credit not just for the songs it beats, but the songs that those songs beat, etc. The point system produces something close to a bell-shaped curve.

2. W/L%: The overall win/loss percentage for the song. The final ranking lines up fairly closely to the rank of the W/L records - there are a few instances where songs might finish a little higher than others with higher W/L records due to facing tougher competition.

3. Rank in the year poll
4. AM rank for the 1980s
5. Rank in the previous 1980s poll from 2013

6. Polarization index: For each ballot, I could calculate the corresponding percentiles for each song. The polarization index is the standard deviation of these percentiles. The higher the value, the more polarizing the song is among our voters.

7. Lovers: A list of the users who placed the song among the top 10% on their ballot. If no one did so, the highest vote (by percentile).

8. Haters: A list of the users who placed the song among the bottom 10% on their ballot. If no one did so, the lowest vote (by percentile).

9. Deciles: A graph of the deciles for the song - this gives a visual representation of the polarization. The users mentioned in the lovers section would appear in the top decile and the users mentioned in the haters section would appear in the bottom decile.

I have long loved seeing presentations with quotes or interesting factoids, but unfortunately I won't have the time to do that. As such, feel free to comment as the rollout progresses with your own feelings and/or fun facts about these!

Finally, I got a request to share the code I have used to come up with this. I will do so at the end so as not to give away any results.

AC/DC polarising: Well known fact. 'Decades' polarising: Surprise.

This is rather awesome Moonbeam. Goodness knows how much effort you put into those love/hate lyric snips.

Moonbeam can explain in more detail, but basically, it allows you to enter a list of albums or songs and then pits them in matchups to aggregate to a total rank.

The AC/DC graph is hilarious. One person in the middle two sections.

I also never thought when I joined this forum that I would be by far the biggest fan of a Smiths song! I used to hate The Smiths, but that song is so good. What really got me into it was an episode of Black Mirror called Hang the DJ, named after a lyric from the song, and featuring the song.

Yep - it is ranking software for albums or songs (or anything else, really) that is based upon win/loss records from 1-on-1 comparisons. There should be a readme in that folder with details.
