AMF's Greatest Guilty Pleasure Songs of All Time (2018): Results Thread

Post by Dexter »

It's time for the results of Top 200 Guilty Pleasure Songs of All Time by Acclaimed Music Forumers.

Before I start the countdown, some things to note:
a) I did not include songs with only one voter, a song must have two votes to qualify in the Top 200. I made this sudden decision after looking at the results and saw numerous tied positions. While I was satisfied with the turnout, only a select few of the 1086 songs voted for have gotten more than 3 common votes. For those who would like to see the full list without this qualification, I will post the spreadsheet after revealing the #1 song.
b) For the same reason as above, I will not post the number of votes and the top voters for each song. I am aware that by not doing this, AMFers will be deprived of the possibility of finding errors in the rankings and computations however, I am fairly confident that there are no errors. Anyways, you can check the spreadsheet later and point errors to me so I can make the necessary changes.
c) I used the same calculation formula I used in the actors poll which I hosted last year: points = 100 * tan (11/90) / (tan ( (10+rank)/90) ), the same one used by JimmyJazz in the 2016 AMF Artists poll.
d) Info for song facts, year of release, and Billboard Hot 100 peak via Songfacts, wikipedia, and internet articles.
e) Most of the layout for the presentation of the Top 200 list is copied by the polls results thread hosted by Petri.

Thank you for all who voted:

1. Jirin (25 songs)
2. StevieFan13 (100)
3. Live in Phoenix (100)
4. andyd1010 (100)

You're off on the release year of "All About That Bass" by about a decade.

Pretty good list so far. I didn't vote because I have no shame in any of my tastes, but it is good to see something like this come around.

Corrected. Thanks! I'll make mistakes in the year of release and chart peak but I'm comforted by the fact that AMFers have watchful eyes. Personally, there's no shame in having no shame.

Don't worry, Sweepstakes Ron. I'm very okay with it. I don't really see any problem here. I even think doing the rollouts simultaneously will increase views on this thread. Personally, I'm very exited to see the rollout of the AMF All Time Songs Poll.
Alright, good to hear. I really like how this poll is going so far: the songfacts go a long way in making this stand out, even if it is a "smaller" poll.

"Separate Ways" ended up making it to the Round of 32 in Unacclaimed IV, so having that come to light made it less surprising.

I tried reading Blender's list, stopped at "The End". Besides, "We Built this City" wasn't all that bad. Glad to see it place on here. Starship I feel is pretty underrated.

Fantastic rollout Dexter! The lyrics and songs acts are great!

Seems like early 80s is dominating so far - especially 1983.

I really like the positive reactions to the songfacts, sorta did it to make the presentation more interesting.

Yeah, I get the criticism about the lyrics but there are way worse songs than "We Built the City." And "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" is an earworm of the okay kind.

Thanks phil. Yes, it seems the 80s, particularly 1983, is dominating. I think this coincides with the rise of MTV and the emphasis on visuals and flash rather than the music.

My dad has a funny story about “Centerfold.” You see, my dad and his friend used to be in a yeshiva, which for you non-Jews is a little like a monastery for folks studying Judaism, only a little chiller and with more beards. Now, when we Jews have meals on the Sabbath, before we make the blessing over the bread, we have to wash our hands, say a short prayer, then not talk until someone makes the prayer over the challah bread and passes it out. Once you eat it, you can talk (the guy making the challah prayer gets a pass).

Anyway, while people wait until the challah prayer, they typically do little wordless chants and songs, just to pass the time. Usually they’re traditional tumes. My dad, a rock fan to his core, decided to have a little fun with it. Just to see what would happen, after he washed his hands one time, he started singing the “nai-nai-na-nai-nai-nai” part from “Centerfold” just to see if the others would follow along. Sure enough, that legend got everyone else singing along to a relatively dirty song. His friend couldn’t stop laughing. Long story short, my dad isn’t a rabbi - in fact, he’s an atheist - but he does love J. Geils.

I'm surprised to see songs like "Obsession" and "Rhythm Is a Dancer" on here. Why would anyone feel guilty about loving those? Never thought they were derided. Goes to show why I couldn't participate in this - I wanted to put forward a list but couldn't determine what would be classified as a "guilty pleasure" or not.

And yay for "Flashdance... What a Feeling"! What a song!

With some songs -- and I'm sure this will come up again later -- I just see a pop song, and not something infamous. Granted, I have built up a high tolerance of '80s/early '90s songs...

I'm not familiar with Jewish traditions but your dad is funny (and cool) for doing that. Such a rock and roll thing to do.

I did not vote for either but I think the choice of "Obsession" has to do with that distinct 80's sound while "Rhythm Is a Dancer" has more to do with that controversial line "I'm as serious as cancer, when I say rhythm is a dancer." It was possibly borrowed from Eric B. & Rakim's "I Ain't No Joke" which goes: "I got a question as serious as cancer/ Who can keep the average dancer…" Both lyrics seem inappropriate.

I put Centerfold on my all time ballot.

Interesting how one person's guilty pleasure is another one's 'Just a good song' when it comes to certain eras of pop.

Although for me, for several years when I was first discovering music all those 80s synth-pop songs were "Those songs you only hear when MTV does best videos of all time countdowns".

Huh. Somebody actually thought a song about a guy having a multitude of casual relationships was a good choice for a political event, and the only reason they realized it was a bad idea was because it actually said the name of one of Bill Clinton's scandals? Might as well choose 'Psychokiller' for the RNC.

And Willie Nelson's really done it all, hasn't he?

My favorite factoid about Animotion's "Obsession" is that it was the theme song to the WWF's hit 1980s wrestling show on NBC, Saturday Night's Main Event. The chorus, "Who do you want me to be to make you sleep with me?", was not used on the family-friendly show, though.

Oh, we need a Spotify playlist of this!!

Error: The 146th song's real title is "Love is a rollercoaster", not "Like a rollercoaster".

Nice criteria, Drexler. Keep on going!

Songfact: Written for Sandie Shaw, who turned it down, Jones' first recording of it wasn't anything special. He said: "Producer Peter Sullivan said: 'You've got a big voice. Nice is not enough. You are not nice!' As a result, the song jumped out of the speakers and became a hit."

98. Jimmy Buffett, "Cheeseburger in Paradise" (1978)

AM Rank: Unranked
AMF 2018 Poll Rank: Unranked
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: 32
Songfact: It was inspired by real life: Buffett had been forced to eat only canned food & peanut butter due to a boating mishap and visions of a piping hot cheeseburger kept popping in his mind. Upon hitting land, he ordered cheeseburger in a restaurant. It was overdone but for Buffett it tasted like manna from heaven.

Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me? Don't cha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me?
97. The Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes, "Don't Cha" (2005)
Points: 69.28

Billboard Hot 100 Peak: 2
Songfact: This raunchy song was written by Cee-Lo Green with an interpolation from Sir Mix-a-Lot. When asked if he pretended to be an attractive girl, Green replied: "No, I was trying to think of an ideal woman - who would be so bold as to say something as outspoken as that song." In a totally unrelated fact, Green was later accused of sexual battery.

You put the boom boom into my heart
96. Wham!, "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" (1984)

Points: 71.76
AM Rank: 3660
AMF 2018 Poll Rank: 1594
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: 1
Songfact: Hall & Oates took little interest in their music videos, so directors hired by their record company could get away with just about anything. Hall said: "Somebody decided the 'Maneater' video wouldn't be complete unless we had an actual panther, a man-eating animal, in the video. It appeared for a second and a half in the video and probably cost $10,000."

Da da da dum, da da da dum
93. Walter Murphy & the Big Apple Band, "A Fifth of Beethoven" (1976)

AMF 2018 Poll Rank: Unranked
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: 1
Songfact: David Fincher was the first choice to direct the music video, but he wanted $1.7 million for the budget. Seems hard to believe today, but Michael Bay did it for $750,000. Like in the C+C Music Factory videos, the featured vocalist was replaced by a more videogenic person, who received several offers for record deals after the video aired.

If you want my body and you think I'm sexy, come on, honey tell me so

Points: 73.628
AM Rank: 1663
AMF 2018 Poll Rank: 2134
Billboard Hot 100 Peak: 1 (1979)
Songfact: The distinctive riff came from Jorge Ben's "Taj Mahal." When Ben filed suit, Stewart agreed to give proceeds from the song to UNICEF. He recalled: "I held my hand up straight away. Not that I'd stood in the studio and said, 'Here, I know we'll use that tune from Taj Mahal as the chorus. The writer lives in Brazil, so he'll never find out.' Clearly the melody had lodged itself in my memory and then resurfaced. Unconscious plagiarism, plain and simple."

I'm happy to see several songs in this Top 200, so far, are included in the Top 2000 songs roll-out as of today. It goes to show that a song being a guilty pleasure and also considered one of the greatest of all time are not mutually exclusive.
