I remember The Pokémon Theme Song being talked about much when this poll was announced, so I thought it be near the top. Apparently I ended up being the only one voting for it. Too bad.

I didn't vote for the number 1, but I do like it. Overall I don't like too many of these songs however, but that was to be expected (or was it?).

Thanks for this Dexter, this was fun!

Great presentation, Dexter! Although I didn’t vote I sure had fun following along.

As for our number 1, I somewhat like “All Star”. It’s probably a solid 6/10 song to me. For what it’s worth though, this is my favorite version of the song (and one I’ve done at karaoke a couple times)...

Thanks, Dexter. You did a lot of research to find interesting and funny anekdotes for all those songs. I didn't know "All Stars" and its popularity eludes me. I voted for quite a lot of these songs, and it also ranges from songs that I truly like to terrible earworms.

It seems like the majority of voters reached a consensus on the aesthetic of a guilty pleasure list. Certainly it fitted the mold of other guilty pleasure lists out there. I'm very pleased with the roll-out, and despite some pop songs that I don't consider embarrassing, I was overall pleased with the results (as much as you can be for a poll that ends on the Spice Girls and Smash Mouth, ha ha).

Unacclaimed music without a bad reputation didn't make it into the consensus, and it'd be difficult to think that the same diverging opinions would come up again if a second poll took place a year or two from now. One outlier approach was a list of songs that weren't on the AM main page. But even the 10,000+ songs on the main page equal a drop in the ocean compared to all the music out there by legends, or less-than-legendary musicians, so a lot of songs are going to miss out on an acclaimed song ranking. I mean, we could have nominated 99% of the recorded works of Woody Guthrie and Duke Ellington, half of the Beatles' songs, and any song from the AM top 100 albums that doesn't have a ranking; but not being regarded like "This Land Is Your Land," "Take the 'A' Train," "A Day in the Life," or "God Only Knows" didn't set off any guilty pleasure alarms.

I only participate in so many polls, but I think we've had an unacclaimed poll (or an elimination game), for someone trying to make a point about a metal or progressive band that people otherwise aren't talking about here.

I'm surprised nobody considered Don't Stop Believing a guilty pleasure.

Not surprised about Wannabe, I genuinely enjoy that song. All Star I'm surprised to see at #1, I see that as too schmaltzy to even really be a pleasure.

Back when the first lists got posted I thought "well, I have no idea what to vote for, most of these songs I either don't like or don't feel guilty about", and I don't think there is much in our final list I would have voted for.
That being said, if I think "what songs would I never listen to in front of people I know cause I'm afraid of their judgement", I could actually have pulled out a list made mostly of whatever Kerrang! liked in the early 00s (so skate-punk and nü metal) and PC Music songs (because as much as I love Pink & Blue by Hannah Diamond, I have been on the receiving end of "WTF looks" whenever I played it with company.

Also, where the heck is Back Street Boys' Everybody (Back Street's Back) ??? Hands down the best boy band song of the 90s, and we could have had 200 different iconic gifs stolen from its video.

I despise Smash Mouth with every fiber of my soul. I'm convinced "All Star" only finished where it did because it was a meme for so long. And I won't lie, there were some gems from that period. This was probably my favorite: https://youtu.be/tEC6W8ujSlE

Thanks Dexter! Great presentation!

PS. I didn’t vote so I shouldn’t complain about anything, but ”Macarena” would have been a better #1 than ”All Star”.

"Macarena" would make my top 10 of most annoying earworms, along with Mambo No. 5. :angry-screaming:

My problem with All Star has been it’s in the category of I Believe I Can Fly, a kids self confidence song that got misplaced on mainstream radio.

Like, it takes the tone of a 60 year old school counselor trying to make an unpopular kid feel better but not having the faintest understanding of teenage culture or what might actually help him.

Like Stuart Smalley, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggonit, I’m an all star!”

Top three are songs frequently used in Neil Cicerega's mash-ups. Coincidence? I think not.

A very minor quibble: "Things That Make You Go Hmmm" actually only has one vote according to the spreadsheet. That would make "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood jump into the top 200.

I've gone through the top 200, and as expected, my reactions are wildly varying. There are some of my all time favorite songs included, and some of my all time least favorites included (including several in my bottom 10).

Based on a 0-10 scale, here are the counts:

0-0.5: 15 songs
1-1.5: 18 songs
2-2.5: 11 songs
3-3.5: 13 songs
4-4.5: 15 songs
5-5.5: 17 songs
6-6.5: 19 songs
7-7.5: 20 songs
8-8.5: 9 songs
9-9.5: 10 songs
10: 4 songs

My favorites are predictably all from the 80s: "Africa", "Flashdance", "Total Eclipse of the Heart", "Take on Me", "Funkytown", and "Obsession".

Ha ha, I feel you. For many years, "Macarena" immediately came to my mind whenever someone asked me to name a song I didn't like. But since a few years ago, my body wants to move to the Bayside Boys' groove. I still really don't like the original song though, so this is a rather unique guilty pleasure. I couldn't vote in this poll, since for me songs are either pleasures, or they aren't. If I would list my pop favourites, I'd do it with proud. :D

I can hear why "All Star" is a catchy tune to a lot of people, but it does not give me pleasure... and I don't think that any component of the song will ever move me in a good way.

Thank you all for the compliments. I took a breather and just got back to the forums. I read all the comments and I'm glad the inaugural poll didn't turn out a total disaster. Shout out too to Honorio for his criticisms, we could take a look at those again in 2-3 years time when the 2nd edition of this poll will hopefully come around. Thousand thanks to Moonbeam for pointing out the error of including "Hmm..." I have made the necessary corrections in the thread and spotify playlist and "Relax" is now in the Top 200. I enjoyed doing this and I'm willing to host the 2nd edition in the future, if I'm still around.

I like the version of Macarena that doesn’t have the valley girl stereotype yelling about how she ditched her guy because he was out of town. I think it gets overhated because of the way it became a phenomenon and the stupid dance.

Of course love Tubthumper and Flagpole Sitta and many of these synth pop gems and schlock epics like Total Eclipse.

Over the top emotional drama, the perfect thing to not quite want to admit you like.

I don't think Smash Mouth was that bad (at least from their big hits). Walkin on the Sun is a nice 60s-throwback jam that I put in my T1000.

My least favorite on the guilty pleasures list is "I'm Yours," a song that has caused me to leave the area multiple times in which it was played in public.

Re: AMF's Greatest Guilty Pleasure Songs of All Time (2018): Results Thread

Post by Dexter »

Hi. I just added some more info to the top 200 guilty pleasure songs by including their rank in the recently concluded AMF 2018 poll. Below are some of what I got from the AMF poll vis-a-vis this poll.

Top 10 Guilty Pleasure Songs* with the highest rank in the AMF 2018 poll:
1. Dancing Queen (96)
2. Take On Me (245)
3. Toxic (370)
4. Livin' on a Prayer (392)
5. Africa (475)
6. Down Under (936)
7. Fields of Gold (974)
8. My Heart Will Go On (1041)
9. Hotline Bling (1095)
10. We Are the World (1130)
* (top 100 only)
The inclusion of above songs riled up some AMFers, particularly "Dancing Queen" and "Take On Me."

Top 10 Guilty Pleasure Songs that are unacclaimed in both AM and AMF 2018 poll:
1. Ice Ice Baby
2. All 4 Love
3. Butterfly
4. Rasputin
5. Don't Trust Me
6. Can't Fight the Moonlight
7. Songbird
8. I Love You Always Forever
9. Wild Wild West
10. Love Me for a Reason
This will probably satisfy those who have a more restrictive idea of what a guilty pleasure is.

For anybody interested in the story of AMF's guiltiest guilty pleasure, Rolling Stone magazine featured a story of "All Star": its genesis; how it became an inescapable hit; how it got a second life as the anthem for a misanthropic; titular green ogre in Dreamworks’ mega-hit Shrek; its current life as the inspiration for countless memes on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and TikTok today; and how it changed the band.

Here's an article in defense of our #34 pick. I'm certainly a defender.

If we get into this again, I don't know how much homework you like doing for a guilty pleasure list, but I've bumped into the weirdness of industrial musical records (not like Nine Inch Nails), and a Barbie record from 1961 with material that I assume was not originally written for Barbie.

I'll be okay with hosting another edition of AMF's Greatest Guilty Pleasure if the interest is still there. We could start sending lists right after the AMF's Greatest Songs deadline.

...
It does sound weird but wonderful. I think there was a comment made after the 2018 poll roll-out that this should have been an exercise in discovering weird but interesting obscure/little heard music. Personally, I think popular music and guilty pleasure go hand in hand. That's why I did not include The Shaggs, Captain Beerheart, and other outsider music in my list. My view finds some support in this Forbes' article, a portion of which is reproduced below:

"That's why there's the phrase guilty pleasures; those songs you sing when no one is looking, the tunes you love that you let no one know about. Maybe you go as far as changing the name of the song before you put it on your iPod so your nosy coworker will never know that I Will Eat Your Soul is really All Out of Love by Air Supply.

I don't like the phrase guilty pleasure. It implies that you should feel guilty, shamed or embarrassed for liking something that brings you joy. No song that gives you pleasure should also give you a sense of guilt. Own what you like, revel in it. If it makes you feel good - and pop hits should make you feel good - don't let that be a burden to you. You should embrace the pleasures afforded you by listening to Rhianna's "Umbrella" or Madonana's "Ray of Light" rather than hiding behind your heavy metal cred and pretending those songs don't make you smile. Personally, I don't feel any guilt about the Ace of Base or Kelly Clarkson tracks on my iPod because I like them. They make me smile. They make me dance. Britney Spears, LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, anything from the disco era, The Jackson 5 and even some Beatles songs - my pop music collection spans years and crossover genres.

Pop music has always been and always will be an aural panacea for distressing times. It will lift you out of a funk. It will help you escape. Don't deny it. Don't feel guilty about it. Just put on "MMMbop" and enjoy the heck out of it."

Here's my spiel on guilty pleasure music, though I don't reach a definitive conclusion.

Last time, there was a lot of talk about what counted as a guilty pleasure. One idea was that it was music that gave you funny looks from people, but I don't agree with that at all. You can get a weird reaction from a ton of music. You can look up any popular album on Amazon and find people whom the album was apparently never meant to reach, who give it 1-star reviews. Any number of iconic albums sounded peculiar when they came out. A lot of music can be "difficult" one way or another. A guilty pleasure song doesn't suggest you have peculiar taste -- it suggests you have NO FUCKING TASTE; that when some piece of garbage hits the Top 10 or Number One and you think, "Who's even falling for this dog doo?," you are temporarily "that guy," that person. The song is virtually indistinguishable from crap, but for some reason you’ve made a distinction.

As far as whether something with an AM rank counts... I guess it unavoidably counts. Obviously, musical acts or songs that consistently show up on published Worst Ever lists or guilty pleasure lists would count; and I'm sure those lists might include ranked artists or songs. The Spice Girls' "Wannabe" has a pretty solid AM ranking -- does that really make the song any less stupid? On the other hand, I'm not sure that an old unranked song with dated production instantly counts. There are a billion songs without an AM rank. (I sure don't want to see a list of nothing but unranked Beatles and Rolling Stones songs.) Even pretty tasteful, ranked songs might have dated production.

After listening a little bit to the industrial musical cuts, this seems to be the "classic." I only found out about this stuff because I bumped into the industrial musical documentary Bathtubs over Broadway featuring Steve Young, a writer for David Letterman. Young's initial reaction to these sort of records was wow, how pathetic ... then, a few days later, he wondered why he couldn't stop humming these songs (which is kind of the story of guilty pleasure songs in a nutshell).

Made a minor change in the rollout by changing the gifs to YouTube videos.

Let's update this list after probably the non-English songs and greatest songs rollouts are done.
