Re: MCCh 2022 (20) November 15
So the massacre has begon. The top 100 is full and albums are actively pushed off. Forever!
Otherwise this is about the most minor update you can have. All three new albums have few ratings and as such are not likely to make much of a dent on the EOY lists. Which doesn't mean they aren't worth listening to, of course. In fact, you can check the highlights of those albums right here:
I noticed that not a single of the many, many King Gizzard albums made the list, not even the extended one. They seem to be well regarded in general though, so does that mean that critics simply didn't keep up with them?
Finally, am I the only one who doubts that Kendrick Lamar is going to do as well on the EOY lists as here. He does have the advantage of fame and an impeccable track record, two things that do help the EOY rankings, as not all lists use look that deeply. Still, I can't shake the feeling that people in general don't like Mr. Morale that much. In fact, like other superstar releases this year (Beyoncé and Taylor Swift especially) I feel like critics where a little to eager to show their respects, even though their respectable albums ended up widely regarded as a little step back from previous masterpieces. Or is that just my perception?

He does have the advantage of fame and an impeccable track record, two things that do help the EOY rankings, as not all lists use look that deeply. Still, I can't shake the feeling that people in general don't like Mr. Morale that much. In fact, like other superstar releases this year (Beyoncé and Taylor Swift especially) I feel like critics where a little to eager to show their respects, even though their respectable albums ended up widely regarded as a little step back from previous masterpieces. Or is that just my perception?

Curious to see how the five (count them five!) Sault albums make an impact on the top 100, following their release on 1 November 2022.

As far as I can tell these have hardly been reviewed. And like the critics, the music nerds on Rate Your Music seem to have hardly heard the albums at all. I guess the people of Sault would say it is not about the acclaim, but I still feel a release strategy like this is misguided and listener unfriendly. I also felt the same way about the Arca album dump late last year and perhaps too about the King Gizzard release schedule of the last months and a half or so, which makes keeping up difficult and even annoying, but Sault are the only one who try to be particularly pretentious about it.

I loved both Sault albums in 2020, but their release strategy since then has been confusing and seems deliberately off putting, which has turned me off to even trying to listen to any of the new stuff. I'm curious if anyone here has actually heard all five new albums. Whenever an artist releases a lot of albums in a compressed timeframe, I just assume that none of it is very good.Rob wrote: ↑Wed Nov 16, 2022 8:38 amAs far as I can tell these have hardly been reviewed. It all seems to be part of an anti-establishment way of doing things, but it isn't really in step with how people listen to music and hinders the songs become part of the everyday. That is probably part of the point.Jackson wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 4:17 amI loved both Sault albums in 2020, but their release strategy since then has been confusing and seems deliberately off putting, which has turned me off to even trying to listen to any of the new stuff. But in case of these five new albums it doesn't matter anymore. They have now been added to Spotify. The limited available album from last year is still absent, though.
