Music of the Early Years: Best Songs + Albums 1959

Post by Schüttelbirne »

And we finish our monthly polls with 1959! Thanks for everyone who participated so far!

I will be using a rather open definition of albums, which might also include albums shelved under compilations.
Albums released in multiple volumes can be voted for in different entries or as one entry, but not both. (Meaning you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 1 and/or Dust Bowl Ballads Vol. 2 OR you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, but you can not have Vol. 1 and the compilation of both on your list).

NOTE: You can put Nina Simone's Little Girl Blue on your album list, but I won't count it since it already qualified for the final round in last month's poll.

The minimum for lists to be counted is five entries; the point system is as follows:

1 – 50
2 – 45
3 – 40
4 – 36
5 – 32
6 – 28
7 – 25
8 – 22
9 – 19
10 – 16
11 – 14
12 – 13
13 – 12
14 – 11
15 – 10
16 – 9
17 – 8
18 – 7
19 – 6
20 – 5

You can post longer lists if you want to; there are always great discoveries to be made!

Classical music is only eligible in movements!

Please make sure to make a new post here if you change your list. I'm compiling throughout the month and won't realize you've changed your list unless you say so.

After this we will be moving on to the final round!

Deadline for this is the end of the month, November 30.

If there's any questions, let me now.

Have fun and happy listening!

Re: Music of the Early Years: Best Songs + Albums 1959

Post by Honorio »

ALBUMS:

1. MILES DAVIS "Kind of Blue" (#45 in my all-time list)
I'm not quite sure about what's modal jazz, but I really don't need to know it to fully enjoy "Kind of Blue". An awesome line-up including legends like Bill Evans and John Coltrane improvised at the very moment the best album on jazz history (Miles Davis laid out the themes just before the session), created astonishing performances of an extraordinary depth and a cool atmosphere.

2. CHUCK BERRY "Chuck ..Berry Is on Top" (#181)
Pure history of rock 'n' roll. In a mere 4 years ("Berry Is on Top" was released in July of 1959 exactly four years after the release of "Maybellene") Chuck Berry had released enough genre-defining hymns to deserve a prominent place in the rock 'n' roll pantheon.

3. THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET "Time Out" (#183)
An audacious album using unusual time signatures (9/8, 6/4 or 5/4), oddly becoming the first jazz album to sell a million copies.

4. JACQUES BREL "Jacques Brel Nº 4"
5. HOWLIN’ WOLF "Moanin' in the Moonlight"
6. CHARLES MINGUS "Mingus Ah Um"
7. RAY CHARLES "The Genius of Ray Charles"
8. MILES DAVIS "Porgy and Bess"
9. ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS "Moanin'"
10. DAVE VAN RONK "Sings Ballads, Blues & a Spiritual"
11. ANTÔNIO CARLOS JOBIM and LUIZ BONFÁ "Orfeu Negro"

12. JOÃO GILBERTO "Chega de saudade"
13. BILL EVANS TRIO "Everybody Digs Bill Evans"
14. CHAMPION JACK DUPREE "Blues from the Gutter"
15. NINA SIMONE "Nina Simone at Town Hall"
16. ORNETTE COLEMAN "The Shape of Jazz to Come"
17. KIMIO ETÓ "Koto Music"
18. SHIRLEY COLLINS "Sweet England"
19. ESQUIVEL "Exploring New Sounds in Hi-Fi"
20. CHET BAKER "Chet"

SONGS:

1. DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET "Take Five" (#211 in my all-time list)
Despite being played a billion times as background music in cafés (and elevators and dentist offices) the song hasn't lost any ounce of its greatness, of its natural sophistication (if I'm allowed to put together those apparently antagonistic words). Probably it's because it creates an easy mood not being at the core easy at all, it simultaneously stimulates and relaxes your brain.

2. EDDIE COCHRAN "Somethin' Else" (#244)
It's not by chance that The Sex Pistols (with vocals by Sid Vicious) covered this song, performing better on charts that Cochran's original. The do-it-yourself garage(ish) attitude, the arrogant energy, surely predated punk rock. Somethin' else, that' for sure.

3. JACQUES BREL "Ne me quitte pas"
It's impossible to go as high as "rain pearls from countries where it never rains" and as low as "become the shadow of your dog."

4. LUIZ BONFÁ and ANTÔNIO CARLOS JOBIM feat. ELIZETH CARDOSO "Manhã de carnaval"
5. BUDDY HOLLY "It Doesn't Matter Anymore"
