Music of the Early Years: Best Songs + Albums 1957

Post by Schüttelbirne »

Let's move on to 1957!

I will be using a rather open definition of albums, which might also include albums shelved under compilations.
Albums released in multiple volumes can be voted for in different entries or as one entry, but not both. (Meaning you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 1 and/or Dust Bowl Ballads Vol. 2 OR you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, but you can not have Vol. 1 and the compilation of both on your list).

The minimum for lists to be counted is five entries; the point system is as follows:

1 – 50
2 – 45
3 – 40
4 – 36
5 – 32
6 – 28
7 – 25
8 – 22
9 – 19
10 – 16
11 – 14
12 – 13
13 – 12
14 – 11
15 – 10
16 – 9
17 – 8
18 – 7
19 – 6
20 – 5

You can post longer lists if you want to; there are always great discoveries to be made!

Classical music is only eligible in movements!

Please make sure to make a new post here if you change your list. I'm compiling throughout the month and won't realize you've changed your list unless you say so.

Next month we'll move on to 1958.

Deadline for this is the end of the month, September 30.

If there's any questions, let me now.

Have fun and happy listening!

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong - Summertime

Is this really from 1957? It's on their 1959 album Porgy and Bess.

No, I think you're right, it was released in 1959. I must have had it as 1957 because it was recorded then. But should be really '59 really. Thanks for spotting that. I've removed it now.

AM lists it as 1957, but that might be a mistake. I can't find a reliable source of a release of that song before 1959. I'll mention it in the sticky thread on errors.

ALBUMS:

1. ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST "West Side Story" (#125 in my all-time list)
Never before and after (with maybe the exceptions of Gershwin and Weill) high and low culture were so close. But not juxtaposed. The classical background of Bernstein fused so tightly with jazz, latin and musical that dodecaphonic series with a swing beat (as we can hear in "Cool") not only does not sound out of place but fresh and new. I like to live in America.

2. THE CRICKETS "The "Chirping" Crickets" (#225)
Four musicians. Two electric guitars, electric bass and drums. The quintessential line-up of the rock & roll band began here.

3. LITTLE RICHARD "Here's Little Richard"
4. CHUCK BERRY "After School Session"
5. ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG "Ella and Louis Again"
6. SONNY ROLLINS "Saxophone Colossus"
7. SABU "Palo Congo"
8. JOHNNY CASH "With His Hot and Blue Guitar!"
9. MILES DAVIS "'Round About Midnight"
10. NAT 'KING' COLE AND HIS TRIO "After Midnight"
11. CARL PERKINS "Dance Album of Carl Perkins"
12. THELONIOUS MONK SEPTET "Monk's Music"
13. MILES DAVIS + 19 "Miles Ahead"
14. FRANK SINATRA " A Swingin' Affair!"
15. THE EVERLY BROTHERS "The Everly Brothers (They're Off and Rolling)"
16. JACQUES BREL " Quand on n'a que l'amour"
17. PETE SEEGER "American Favorite Ballads"
18. ODETTA "At the Gate of Horn"
19. FAIRUZ "راجعون (Rajioun)"
20. MILES DAVIS QUINTET "Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet"

SONGS:

1. ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST (RERI GRIST, LARRY KERT & CAROL LAWRENCE) "Somewhere (Ballet)" (#152 in my all-time list)
American utopia. Amidst the confrontational world depicted in "West Side Story" (a Romeo and Juliet story set in New York City gang wars), "Somewhere" acts both as the musical centrepiece and as a utopian escape. The creators of the musical, most of them gay or bisexual, longed for a "place for us" away from the oppressive and censorious American society of the 1950s.

2. ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off"
3. BUDDY HOLLY "Peggy Sue"
4. ELVIS PRESLEY "All Shook Up"
5. THE CRICKETS "That'll Be the Day"
6. ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST (MICKEY CALIN & ENSEMBLE) "Cool"
7. SONNY ROLLINS "St. Thomas"
8. MILES DAVIS "'Round Midnight"
9. SABU "El Cumbanchero"
10. SAM COOKE "You Send Me"
11. BO DIDDLEY "Mona"
12. JERRY LEE LEWIS "Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On"
13. THE EVERLY BROTHERS "Bye Bye Love"
14. BUDDY HOLLY "Everyday"
15. ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST (ENSEMBLE) "Gee, Officer Krupke!"
16. MILES DAVIS + 19 "Miles Ahead"
17. FRANK SINATRA "All the Way"
18. ELVIS PRESLEY "(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me)"
19. JERRY LEE LEWIS "Great Balls of Fire"
20. LITTLE RICHARD AND HIS BAND "Lucille"

24. THE EVERLY BROTHERS "Wake Up Little Susie"
25. DALE HAWKINS "Susie-Q"
26. ELVIS PRESLEY "Jailhouse Rock"
27. THE CRICKETS "Oh Boy"

My life is a little shook up these days, I'm working a lot and living in two places at the same time, so it's probably the 2d time in years I forget to vote.
See you in 1958 :music-rockon:
