The 7 new artists I see joining the ranks:
Phoebe Bridgers
Tyler, the Creator (actually y'all don't listen to hip-hop, so prob not)
black midi (not sure)
Little Simz
Big Thief
FKA twigs
Charli XCX
Billie Eilish (omg almost forgot her)

3 I'm hoping for:
Lingua Ignota
Jessie Ware
Natalia Lafourcade

Artists that are going to place a lot higher:
Angel Olsen
Taylor Swift (those private jets tho)
Lana Del Rey (?)
Fiona Apple

I have The Jesus and Mary Chain for highest dropout, but I'm most likely wrong

Thanks for sharing some very promising calls.

I'm looking forward to see where the following end up:

Big Thief - even made my top 1500 artists list, and achieved an AM rank 402 in AMs latest release (including songs through 2019). I'd be surprised if they placed higher than 200.

Jessie Ware - She has been growing on me very much over the past year or so. I have her at 512 and AM has her at 709. Probably won't get any higher than 300 in our poll.

Phoebe Bridgers - I like her studio output but thought her vocals were a bit pitchy live at the Outlands festival. I have her at 690 and AM has her at 1116. Probably won't get higher than 200 in the poll.

I think saying AM has these artists at whatever rank is rather misleading considering the main website hasn't updated in years, especially when all three acts you are discussing have had what is probably considered their biggest releases since then (not that Big Thief's would be there yet).

Good point.

I'm using the data that's available.

Thanks for the clarification.

I can't believe Neutral Milk Hotel didn't make it to the top 500 last time.

I almost have a solid list of the top 250, but I'm struggling with a few, not sure if they made it or will drop out. Also not sure if I'm missing any other new entries. Based on what I have right now, only one of these will make it in:

273 Bryan Adams
294 Celine Dion
306 Alicia Keys
318 Judas Priest
321 Tim Buckley
347 Chico Buarque
353 Linkin Park
388 Hot Chip
377 Motörhead

Thanks to prosecutorgodot for some interesting input.

My surmise as to most likely to make it into the top 250 from the above list includes:

1) Linkin Park (2020 AM Rank = 2619 / 2016 Poll Rank = 128)
2) Chico Buarque (1432 / 442)
3) Bryan Adams (937 / 254)
4) Judas Priest (685 / 1023
5) Tim Buckley (248 / 167)
6) Motorhead (291 / 777)
7) Hot Chip (284 / 323)
8) Alicia Keys (594 / 484)
9) Celine Dion (2236 / 389)

I have no doubt War on Drugs will make it. Previously at 419, they are def one of the biggest gainers.

Since Chico Buarque made it, I don't think any of the others will make it in :(

That leaves me with just one extra artist. I'm thinking it's either Fats Domino (243), Drifters (313) or Yeah Yeah Yeahs (416) that falls off. Currently Bryan Adams (273) is the highest dropout, but it might be Fats Domino.

Bridgers > Thief > Simz for highest entry.

Excellent prediction by prosecutorgodot.

In my estimation, the three picks that have a bit of higher risk of not placing as predicted include:

Television, Mitski, Run the Jewels, and Tears for Fears.

Henry, maybe Television, but I hope not, their second album is good too...

I completely forgot about Sharon Van Etten, and I might be forgetting someone else. Even I can't stop listening to "Like I Used To" from last year. So I have my top 2 who I think would definitely go before SVE:

Siouxsie and the Banshees (214)
Little Simz (N/A)

And some other potentials just for good measure:

Phil Collins
Animal Collective
Lady Gaga
Van Halen

Also I had Bridgers > Thief, but I have a feeling that it's just too close to call.

Don't know who else should be out of the 200 but I'm pretty sure Little Simz did get only low votes... I'm a bit surprised that wasn't enough to scrap the bottom of the top 500 but I doubt she could make it to the top 200.
There's no way Siouxsie, AC, Gaga and Van Halen missed the top 500 so I'd guess Phil Collins as the other one you need to cut out.

Now that we've seen 186-200 and I have read the input from Nassim, I would place the following performers in the higher risk category:

Television, Mitski, Run the Jewels, Animal Collective and Little Simz.

Television just showed up
Little Simz won't make it, most votes for her were on the 200 range
Mitski and Run the Jewels had about 20 votes each including some top 50 (and a 2nd place for RTJ by cadacava ) so there's no way they missed the top 500. Though I must say I didn't expect either that high.
No way Animal Collective isn't in the top 500 either

Longer list this time - down to 500 in the 2019 Poll:

Bands that are in the 195 to 250 range in the 2019 poll. Which of these are likely to miss the top 500?

The Band - would be disappointing to me
The Strokes - not so confident, but probably in the top 175
St. Vincent - not so confident yet
The Zombies - I suspect that the Xombies are in the top 175
Adele - I suspect that she will be in the top 175
Modest Mouse - more confident than I am for XTC
Grimes - could be a miss
XTC - not confident
Tame Impala - could be on the upswing
Yes - would be disappointing to me
Fats Domino - some have stated that Fats is out
__________________________________________________________________

The following performers rated from 250 - 360 in the 2019 poll. Any of these have a decent chance of being in the top 175 in our current poll?

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - anyone think this performer still shows up?
Bryan Adams
Bon Iver - anyone think this performer still shows up?
Celine Dion
Alicia Keys
The Drifters
Mitski - likely makes the top 175 per Nassim (and he has good data to support his surmise)
Judas Priest - anyone think this performer still shows up?
Tim Buckley
Christina Aguilera
Taylor Swift
Keane
The Beautiful South
Mylène Farmer
Angel Olsen
Sarah Vaughan
Jackson Browne
Gary Numan
Erasure
Heart
Run the Jewels - - likely makes the top 175 per Nassim (and he has good data to support his surmise)

_____________________________________________________________________________________
At this point, I do not see any of the following (from 361-500 in the 2019 poll) getting into the top 175 in our current poll.

Anyone have a different view?

I'm confident that my top 200 still stands, just replace Simz with SVE. I guess now it's time to predict the top 100.

The two main artists I'm mad don't ever show up are Joe Hisaishi and Norah Jones.

The Eagles placed at 221 in our artist poll this year. The downward trend for many of my faves from the 1970's continues. But, at least there still in the mix :-)

Some of my favorites that do not appear to be widely appreciated among forum members or critics include:

Try and Love Again (my 246th favorite of all-time)
After the Thrill Has Gone (my 604th favorite of all-time)
James Dean (my 1200th favorite of all-time)
In the City (my 1725th favorite of all-time)
Pretty Maids All In a Row (2498)
Sad Café (3580)
Those Shoes (4281)
Tryin’ (4570)
Get Over It (4664)
Train Leaves Here This Morning (4835)
On the Border (4873)
King Of Hollywood (5292)
Is It True (6144)
My Man (6174)
Please Come Home for Christmas (6544)
Outlaw Man (7408)
Bitter Creek (7516)

She also got a #1 spot on ProjectTermina's list so she is a lock, since the #1's that didn't rank already got a mention.

dang, i never expected Big Thief to get this high of a debut. There's so many classic bands that are placing below.

I was trying to run my own predictions, I only got 60% of this set of 25... a D minus...

Next set:
Pet Shop Boys, Aphex Twin, Foo Fighters
My Bloody Valentine, Genesis, Fela Kuti
Frank Ocean, Weezer, Amy Winehouse
Joanna Newsom, Byrds, Sam Cooke
Janelle Monáe, Wire, Patti Smith
Can, Nine Inch Nails, Fleet Foxes
Strokes, St. Vincent, Grimes, Tame Impala,

...as well as the big three. we'll see if they surpass this.

Is that the Scooby-Doo gang? :mrgreen:

I really don't know any of their music to make a joke about their bad music.

I got another D minus.

For 101-125, I have

Roxy Music, Van Morrison, Otis Redding, Paul Simon out of top 100

Jacques Brel, Ramones, Metallica, Sly and the Family Stone
Jay-Z, Flaming Lips, Arctic Monkeys, Charles Mingus,
Massive Attack, Stooges, Beach House, Fleet Foxes,
Aphex Twin, Foo Fighters, My Bloody Valentine, Byrds,
Janelle Monáe, Strokes, St. Vincent, Grimes

private flight enthusiast escaped my clutches again, but i don't think she can triple her ranking. this is her last stand... i hope.

Kings is a great song! And very accessible, so I'm surprised it isn't better known. My dad has played that song a million times and we've seen Steely Dan together twice.

[The Shaggs - "My Pal Foot Foot"]
Hmm I guess a little Beefheart-esque, but I'm not interested enough to listen to more.

I feel like I could record this, which is... inspiring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I only got 56% this round, can't believe I did worse.
I did not think Janelle Monae could get into the top 100, especially since she did not release anything sizable (except maybe one song?) since the last poll. I guess maybe it's more like there are a lot of people who have her just under #100, which was the previous ballot size.
The previous ballot size was 200, not 100.
And, as I have said a few times before, there is both a different formula and quite a few new people voting this time around. I think quite a few of our new members are more modern oriented. A shift in demographics is the likeliest explanation for any unexpected jump.
Top 100 is a little eye opening, but it follows from the gains made by pretty much every recent female artist in the poll (Grimes, Taylor Swift, Angel Olsen, etc. etc.).
Why not, my ranking of the top 100 (not a prediction, my order of preference) and my favorite song by each act. There is no one in there I dislike, but the bottom 20 don't figure much in what I listen to (except for Lipstick Vogue, love that song)
21) Led Zeppelin (virtually a tie between Since I've Been Loving You and Babe I'm Gonna Leave You)
22) Michael Jackson (Thriller)
23) Arctic Monkeys (The View from the Afternoon)
24) Nick Cave (Cannibal's Hymn)
25) New Order (Temptation)
26) Blur (Out of Time)
27) David Bowie (Moonage Daydream)
28) Queen (Don't Stop Me Now)
32) Jimi Hendrix (Are You Experienced)
33) Wilco (Radio Cure)
34) Bob Dylan (Like a Rolling Stone)
36) Björk (Bachelorette)
Bands I probably should have voted for :
37) Pixies (Hey)
38) Vampire Weekend (Step)
39) Simon and Garfunkel (The Only Living Boy in New-York)
Artists I would have voted for if I had extended my list to 200 :
41) Stevie Wonder (Master Blaster (Jammin'))
42) Coldplay (Strawberry Swing)
43) Janelle Monae (Dance Apocalyptic)
50) Fiona Apple (Extraordinary Machine)
51) The Kinks (I'm Not Like Everybody Else)
55) The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations)
56) U2 (Bad)
57) The Clash (Train in Vain (Stand by Me))
Fiona Apple's making a sizable leap into the top 100. I assume top 50 would be too bold, but 70 or even 60?
I wonder if there is a performer that is missing from my list, because I do not yet understand why Van Morrison would move up so far after falling from 63 in 2016 to 90 in 2019.
Looks like The Police and CCR may have moved up significantly since the 2019 poll. Not sure why that would happen.
Even I now have Fiona Apple at 59.
Interesting to see the elevation in the 2022 poll of Van Morrison, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Joni Mitchell. No surprise that Kendrick Lamar also saw his rank increase. While Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits are meh for me, they are also on the rise among the poll participants this year. A Waits bounce was expected because of his decrease from 2016 to 2019. Is it possible for Waits to enter the top 30 again this year as he did in 2016?
1. The Beatles / 1. 1.
2. David Bowie / 2. 2.
3. Radiohead / 3. 4.
Gainers that have at least doubled position:
Fiona Apple 2.71x (149 -> 55)
Taylor Swift 2.68x (327 -> 122)
Angel Olsen 2.51x (336 -> 134)
War on Drugs 2.15x (419 -> 195)
Run the Jewels 2.12x (360 -> 170)
Stone Roses 2.04x (382 -> 187)
Props to acroamor for getting Fiona Apple almost exactly. I originally made the prediction of her being biggest gainer, and I went against my own prediction and posted her in 76-100.
Henry, for top 25 I have Bob Marley over the Cure. You're probably right though.
76-100: 72%
51-75: 88%
Beatles in 2013: 137.4% pts of 2nd
Beatles in 2016: 142.8% pts of 2nd
Beatles in 2019: 122.5% pts of 2nd
Over/under this time? I'm going to say 117%.
Interesting to see the rise in the Stone Roses when they haven't released an album in 28 years. It appears that they bounce around quite a bit in our polls as they fell dramatically in the 2019 poll after placing at 157 in the 2016 poll.
The Fiona Apple increase is most impressive because she is now in the top 60, and made a fantastic gain in the 2019 poll from a placement of 327 in the 2016 poll. The acclaim for the Idler Wheel is not nearly as impressive as the acclaim for Fetch the Bolt Cutters. I didn't find either Werewolf or Every Single Night to be particularly enjoyable. I need to listen to Hot Knife a few more times. At this point I prefer Valentine over the other songs on the Idler Wheel album.
I also need to listen more to at least the first five songs on Fetch the Bolt Cutters.
I'm looking forward to recommendations from other forum participants for listening priorities among the following songs:
I Want You to Love Me
Shameika
Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Under the Table
Relay
Also, please indicate if any of the last 8 songs on the album should be prioritized for my future listening.
My recommendation for the first five songs would be Unter the Table and for the last eight Cosmonauts :greetings-waveyellow:
Talking Heads is set to improve on its placements in both 2016 and 2019.
Big drop for Michael Jackson. Is his music not aging well?
I'm curious to see if there is any substantial movement in the top 10 this year. Not too many artists in the top 30 that are releasing their best songs anymore.
Arcade Fire (We-2022), Bjork (Fossora-2022), and Kanye West (Jesus is King, Donda and Donda 2) have had releases since 2019. But, I am not yet convinced that any of these newer releases surpassed earlier releases for any of these artists. Note that both Arcade Fire and Kanye slipped downwards in the 2019 poll from their 2016 placements. Will that momentum continue?
Radiohead's most recent studio album was released in 2016.
So, what will be the motivation for movement in the top 10, or top 25 in this poll?
Nirvana has been trending upwards, will that trend continue? I think so.
Will The Velvet Underground bounce back from its disappointing (for others not me) decline in 2019? I'm guessing that they will.
1. The Beatles / 1. 1.
2. David Bowie / 2. 2.
3. Radiohead / 3. 4.
4. Bob Dylan / 4. 3.
5. The Rolling Stones / 5. 5.
10. Nirvana / 15. 23.
11. Prince / 10. 9.
12. Pink Floyd / 8. 14.
13. Bjork / 18. 16.
14. The Velvet Underground / 22. 11.
15. The Smiths / 14. 15.
16. U2 / 16. 17.
17. The Beach Boys / 13. 12.
Re: Discussion of best artist poll predictions and prior poll results
Apparently my write-up submittals did not meet appropriate journalistic standards for inclusion elsewhere, so I'll put them here after they appear in the poll roll-out.
136. Steely Dan:
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker formed Steely Dan in 1971. The name is based on a dildo discussed in William Burroughs’ “Naked Lunch.” Fagen and Becker met at Bard College in 1967 and played in several local bands that featured Chevy Chase on drum, including Leather Canary.
Kenny Vance (of Jay and the Americans) took an interest on Fagen and Becker in 1969. In 1971 a friend of Vance, Gary Katz, moved to LA to become a staff producer for ABC records and hired the duo as staff songwriters. After realizing that the songs were too complex for other ABC artists, Katz signed the duo to ABC as recording artists.
John Tobacco describes their music as seeping into your subconscious and clinging tight to your inner ear whether you want to remember it or not. Their non-romantic, cryptic, name-dropping and superbly ironic lyrics induce memories that you did not know you even had. There were little touches of subtle ear candy you caught when you least expected it. And then there are the chords; the fluid that lubricates the inner workings of their songs. Those luscious unpredictable chords derived somewhere between Debussy and Thelonious Monk.
Some of my favorites that do not appear to be widely appreciated among forum members or critics include:
Royal Scam (1070)
Kings (1117)
Midnite Cruiser (1123)
Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me) (1132)
Godwhacker (1142)
With a Gun (1144)
Throw Back the Little Ones (1164)
I Got the News (1256)
Sign In Stranger (1292)
Jack of Speed (1294)
Gaslighting Abbie (1296)
Almost Gothic (2654)
Charlie Freak (2884)
Fire in the Hole (2908)
What a Shame About Me (4227)
West of Hollywood (4280)
Negative Girl (4286)
Green Earrings (4236)
Your Gold Teeth II (4247)
Rose Darling (4258)
The Last Mall (4274)
The Fez (4293)
Monkey In Your Soul (4300)
Two Against Nature (4715)
Janie Runaway (4827)
East St. Louis Toodle-Oo (4915)
