Moonbeam: Thank you for producing the most perfect marriage of sights and sounds to my neurodivergent brain. Hearing those booming synths of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” and seeing the impossibly bright ORANGE of your hair for the first time, Annie, was something that etched itself permanently into my brain and my heart. To this day, whenever I see something bright orange, I think of you and the profound impact you have had on my life. As a kid who felt different in part because I couldn’t stop talking about my special interests and had them all ranked in favorite order, the power contained in the combination of your music and your videos was a great comfort. I never felt accepted in my home town for who I was, but I could put on your music or watch your videos and feel like I belonged. The liberation I felt as I had moved away from my home town for college and lifted myself from the shackles of feeling ugly and that I was unworthy of love inspired me to crop my hair short and dye it light blonde as an homage to that image from the “Sweet Dreams” video tattooed in my soul. That confidence and acceptance of myself for exactly who I am is in no small part due to the empowerment I have taken from your music, and I can’t thank you enough for that.

There is a dramatic theater to your music that inhabits me whenever I put it on. I can FEEL it wind its way through me when I put on a song like “I Did It Just the Same” or “Paint a Rumour” or “Savage” or “This City Never Sleeps”. I can feel free to frolic in the weirdness of “Step on the Beast” knowing that there are other kooks in the world who felt compelled to put that weirdness out into the world. I can feel the loving embrace in the warm glow of the synths and the tender vocals on “Adrian”. Dave, thank you for always providing such a dynamic backdrop to showcase Annie’s incredible voice. That combination is endlessly vibrant and captivating.

On a final note, I watched my VHS copy of the Greatest Hits repeatedly when I was 19 and 20, including with my parents when they visited me in Mexico when I studied abroad there for a semester. My mom was particularly struck by the imagery of you rocking yourself back and forth as you sang “I don’t love you anymore” in “Don’t Ask Me Why”, Annie. My mom passed away last year, and when I hear that song now, the memories of sharing your brilliance with her are augmented by that rocking motion mimicking the grief I went through. So even now, your music nurses me through some of the most difficult times, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Loving the presentation so far! Well done, BleuPanda!

Unfortunately, most of my favorites seem to be taking a bit of a tumble down the rankings. Hopefully that changes with the remaining list!

Rob: Maybe it is because I’m a film buff at heart that I rate Ennio Morricone so high, but I find it hard to believe that I would ever not fall in love with his distinct kind of music. There are many great composers of movie scores, but still there is a richness in Morricone’s work that is stellar. He became famous for reinventing the sound of the western. Only a few years before A Fistful of Dollars Elmer Bernstein created the popular main theme for The Magnificent Seven, arguably the most iconic western score before Morricone. That is still traditional orchestral music, no matter how good it is. Yet three years later Morricone somehow got the crazy idea to mix Mexican mariachi with surf rock guitars and somehow created the sound that has defined the western genre since. He later would enhance it with subtle opera tones in Once Upon a Time in the West, whose score is for me one of the peak achievements in music. After the string of successful spaghetti western scores Morricone didn’t rest. He composed for over 500 movies and although there are inevitably some soundtracks there that sound very much the same he kept innovating, across various genres. Hear for example the weird instrumentation that sets up the mischievous tone for police thriller Investigation of Citizen Above Suspicion. Or the slowly rolling thunder for mob film The Untouchables. Or the ecstatic piano workout of The Legend of 1900. To say nothing of his masterpiece The Mission, which mixes South-American folk with western liturgical traditions. No musician puts me in such a transcendental state as Morricone.

bonnielaurel: Coming from a family of soul and gospel singers Whitney Houston was destined to become a singer herself. Her first signs of talent came early, in the church choir in New Jersey. Her debut album, carefully planned by record executive Clive Davis, was an immediate worldwide success. The romantic songs had an eighties pop sound, but her way of singing was rooted in soul and gospel. Her voice was exceptionally powerful and bright, and she had a wide variety in timbre. A succession of hits included lively dance songs and ballads about heartbreak and separation. Some of these were covers. She could turn a melody into her own with derivations and melismatic adlibs. Technique and expression went hand in hand. She also became an actress. In The Bodyguard she turned Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You from a country into a soul ballad. This song was often used as the opening dance at a wedding, although it’s really about separation. Her soundtracks showcased her vocal skills, but she also returned to her gospel roots. To adapt a modern sound she collaborated with young R&B producers like Babyface, Darkchild, Wyclef Jean and Missy Elliott. In her later years she had personal and health problems, and the gossip columns dragged her through the mud. Tired of stardom she died at the age of forty-eight in her bathtub. She deserves to be remembered as “the greatest voice of all”.

Akhenaten: This is the age old of tale of…
Boy forms boy band.
Boy band become biggest band in the world (briefly).
Boy leaves boy band (artistic differences, obvs).
Boy records ridiculously impressive, soaringly awesome, increasingly challenging series of four eponymous albums. (twisting and twisting the Andy Williams template into unfounded territories)
Album 4 fails to chart anywhere. (unfathomly and unbelievably)
Boy turns to drink and releases a series of awful cover version albums that nobody wants to hear.
Boy asks other boys to reform boy band.
Boy becomes star again. (woohoo)
Boy still not liking fame though.
Boy becomes near-recluse and makes avant-garde neo-classical experimental music, till death claims a legend.

Scott's influence is remarkable. A list of artists who sure Scott as a major influence is basically a list of my favourites artists: David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Alex Turner, Julian Cope, Neil Gannon, Marc Almond, Goldfrapp, Leonard Cohen.

Quite a few unexpected falls out of the top 200, including Serge Gainsbourg and Scott Walker.
However nothing registers more to me as the deep dive Ennio Morricone took. I don't know who all here abandoned him, but I will find you and I'll make you reenact the finale of Once Upon a Time in the West in real life.

Bannable offense, no?

We didn't vote (or rather our vote got quietly deleted) and would never have voted for him so you couldn't say we abandoned him, but if we had, we'd be scared as shit now.

Certainly a significantly more interesting composer than John Williams though...

I feel guilty now (and thus scared)!
I did vote for him last time, but decided to leave him out now since I don't put in any classical composers either (also, he was the only film composer I put in then, which is a but odd too).

Thank you for re-invigorating my interest in exploring music by new artists. The 90s were largely a ghost town for me as I felt so alienated by all of the barbed cynicism and jaded angst. When I saw the “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” video for the first time, I stopped in my tracks. I hadn’t caught the opening credits to see who the artist was, but was completely mesmerized by the sights and especially the sounds of that relentlessly thumping chug that drives the whole thing. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was you, who I had only known from “The Locomotion”! I immediately bought Fever and was treated to the most gorgeously produced pop record I had heard in a long time, an effortless series of electropop rushes that felt so vibrant and alive.

Your music also had a pivotal role to play in the initial stages of my relationship with my soon-to-be wife. Living in Australia, she was able to send me copies of albums I couldn’t find in the US, so you feel like an indelible part of our courtship. Indeed, the longing that came from Body Language echoed my own longing to be with her while we had a long-distance relationship. When I finally moved to Australia, travelling around to see you on various spots of your tour felt like a victory lap for our love.

Your status as some sort of fairy godmother of pop is well-earned through the emotive wonder only you can pull out with songs like “White Diamond”, “I Believe in You”, and “The One”, and your artistic triumphs in the wake of breast cancer fill me with radiant joy.
This is so sweet, Moonbeam.

Poptimism isn't the same as just voting for mainstream artists IMO. I view the term applying more to people who like Robyn or Carly Rae Jepsen than someone like Bon Jovi

I'll meet you tomorrow beneath the gallows at high noon! I'll bring the harmonica.

All joking aside, I was a bit confused to about the whole film composers yes but classical composers no thing. Then again, Morricone conducted and recorded most and perhaps all his scores himself, plus he extensively toured with an orchestra during the later stages of his life (I caught one of his shows in Amsterdam some years ago), so I guess there is a difference with at least the pre-recording era composers.

I have become something of an Iron Maiden fan recently and included them in my list. I was hoping they would stay in the top 200. The first “proper” metal artist I’ve gotten into.

Moonbeam: There is so much to be thankful to you for, Janet! You taught me at the young age of 9 that music could serve as more than entertainment — a lot more. Seeing and reading about the profound social impact your Rhythm Nation 1814 album had on black youth taught me that music can not only be empowering, but can genuinely change people’s lives. Witnessing each single release and the corresponding video with utmost awe for that album was an absolute delight.

Yours was also the first concert I attended. The love you gave to the audience during that show in Detroit in 1993 gave me all the convincing I needed that I could overcome my social anxiety and throw myself fully into a rewarding concert experience.

Over the years, your music has served as my comfort food. I burned a CDR of ballads from across your career that I played every night for years in order to help me fall asleep — your blissful harmonies were a perfect antidote to whatever anxieties threatened to prevent me from sleeping. And whenever I need to be reminded of the uplifting power of pop music to shake us out of the doldrums and worries of life, I can put on a song like “Alright” or “Enjoy” or “Go Deep” and be lifted out of whatever is troubling me. I’ve got a copy of the Rhythm Nation 1814 cassette next to my desk. Just looking at the cover and the font along the side give me a reminder to be proud of what I’ve accomplished and to keep striving. 33 years later, the legacy of that impact is something I carry with me.

bonnielaurel: In the early nineties Mariah Carey grabbed attention as the singer with the extraordinarily wide range. It goes from a deep, warm contralto register to an extremely high whisper register, comparable to a classical coloratura. She broke through with some smooth soul pop ballads and light-hearted, danceable songs in 90s R&B style. Her MTV Unplugged session proved her qualities as a live performer. Her lyrics are often about love. Hero is about the confidence you need to find within yourself. On her covers of the Jackson 5 and Nilsson she reinterprets the original melody with melismatic vocals. Her Christmas evergreen would become unavoidable every December. She remained popular by collaborating with emerging artists like Boyz II Men and Jay-Z, and with her old frenemy Whitney Houston. She's often ridiculed for her diva reputation and her schmaltzy side, but she remains one of the most gifted vocalists in pop history.

There is a lot of movement in the list. Not all those jumps of 50 to 100 spots can be explained, but I do notice a consistent deep dive for poptimist favorites of the eighties and nineties. I'm not exactly a fan of those acts to put it mildly, but I still wonder what gives.

It's also interesting to see how this forum's album and song polls don't really give you an idea how artists will place here. The Divine Comedy had no albums ranking in our poll and only one song at the bottom, but still ranks one place above the Eagles here, a band with three ranking songs (including one in the top 100) and one album.

Rob wrote: Sat Aug 27, 2022 6:57 pm There is a lot of movement in the list. Not all those jumps of 50 to 100 spots can be explained, but I do notice a consistent deep dive for poptimist favorites of the eighties and nineties. I'm not exactly a fan of those acts to put it mildly, but I still wonder what gives.

Two main reasons:
1) The formula I use is a bit harsher on acts who are disproportionately supported by a small number of very high votes
2) Different people voted, and I believe there was a higher number of pop fans in our previous poll

Just looking at Mariah Carey, these 13 people voted back in 2019:
keater (3)
bonnielaurel (12)
frezzie (15)
Sahrocco (28)
Renan (39)
Bruno (44)
Neil (51)
vivian (61)
phil (64)
profeta (70)
Nico (71)
Elder (78)
RedAnt (142)

Of those, only Elder, profeta, phil, Neil, Bruno, Renan, and bonnielaurel voted this time around. In the place of those missing people, she gained voted by prosecutorgodot, acr0320, Lagunin, and Cadavaca - and, while Cadavaca placed her at #5, the other three were sub-100 votes. So, Mariah Carey went from 12 to 7 top 100 votes, which is a rather large drop!

So, it really is as simple as different people voting means different results.

Rob wrote: Fri Aug 26, 2022 9:39 pmAll joking aside, I was a bit confused to about the whole film composers yes but classical composers no thing. Then again, Morricone conducted and recorded most and perhaps all his scores himself, plus he extensively toured with an orchestra during the later stages of his life (I caught one of his shows in Amsterdam some years ago), so I guess there is a difference with at least the pre-recording era composers.
Oh, so people could've voted for Shostakovich and Prokofiev if they had based that vote on their film scores alone? Well, that makes sense...

Too bad van Gogh didn't write any film scores or our list would have been game after all.

bonnielaurel: Ella Fitzgerald was born in Virginia, but like many jazz musicians she moved northward to New York. She started there as a street singer, but soon became a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance. At the Apollo Theater she performed with musicians like Chick Webb, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. She made her own versions of standard tunes by including a lot of improvisation and scat singing. Her recordings with The Ink Spots combine that with close harmony singing. With Louis Armstrong she recorded three albums of standards with swinging rhythms, humor and romance. She had a bright and powerful voice with a big vibrato and a warm timbre. As a hard worker she recorded the Song Books of major songwriters like Cole Porter and George Gershwin. These records earned her the nickname First Lady of Song. She was hugely influential on the jazz singers of the next generations.

Rob: Phoebe Bridgers only debuted five years ago, but she has become as essential to my musical story as any other artist. Immediately upon hearing her song Funeral from her debut album I was struck by the deep sadness of her music. “Jesus Christ, I’m so blue all the time”, she sings resigned. It is a risk to sing with such open sorrow. It can easily be too much. Yet there is a softness in her voice that removes any trace of melodrama and instead creates a welcoming sound that still doesn’t hide deep insecurities, traumas and pains. I wouldn’t call her lyrics depressive as much as knowing that sometimes life can be terribly disappointing. If you find yourself in such a spot you can turn to Phoebe Bridgers and find a sound of recognition, with a voice that is warm, sweet, understanding and clearly hurt. All accompanied by an unusually rich melodic feel that is not typical of such singer-songwriter material. My voice isn’t remotely like Bridgers’, but since I’ve known her I wanted to be able to sing like her in my saddest moments.
As an addition, on Silk Chiffon, a MUNA song she featured on, we suddenly find her in an upbeat mood, sounding happy and in love. As much as I relate to her sorrow, I wouldn’t mind some more feelgood Bridgers either.

bonnielaurel: No one could put sadness and pain into a melody like Billie Holiday. She took inspiration from the hardships in her own life. As the daughter of an unmarried woman, little Eleanora Fagan grew up in foster families and a Catholic reformatory institution. When she was eleven a neighbor tried to assault her. In brothels she got to know the jazz music of Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith. In Harlem she started singing in nightclubs under the name Billie Holiday - the first name of actress Billie Dove and the surname of her biological father Clarence Holiday, whom she saw performing as a guitarist with Fletcher Henderson. She made her first records as a vocalist with Teddy Wilson's swing orchestra. Famous musicians she worked with were Lester Young, Artie Shaw, Count Basie and Benny Goodman. Her recordings turned popular show tunes into jazz standards. She did light-hearted, swinging songs, as well as torch songs about loneliness and heartbreak. She wrote some tunes and lyrics herself. When Abel Meeropol proposed Strange Fruit to her she initially didn't want to do it, because the subject of racial lynchings in the South was too heavy. When she performed it one could hear a pin drop in the nightclub. She herself had to deal with segregation. In her later years she had problems with alcohol and drugs. On her final recordings there are cracks in her voice. Lady Sings the Blues is the title of a song, an album, a ghostwritten autobiography and a biopic with Diana Ross. Lady Day has continually inspired jazz singers for generations.

Akhenaten: Paul McCartney struggled throughout the sixties, his band barely scraping by; releasing failed song after failed song, failed album after failed album. But thankfully by 1970 the band decided to pack it all in as a bad lot, and McCartney was free to launch himself as a solo artist.

Or something like that…

My take on Macca's post-Beatles career is artistically it didn't take off until his collaborations with Elvis Costello in 1989. There were highlights before then like Another Day, Live And Let Die and Venus And Mars, but he had an awful lot to live up to. My theory is Costello offloaded some of that expectation, and McCartney came out all the better and freer from it.

My favourite Macca albums are from that period onwards are:
Flowers In The Dirt (1989)
Flaming Pie (1997)
Memory Almost Full (2007)
New (2013)

He's always had a freakish talent for a melody (which is always being said), he's always had a fab rock voice (which isn't commented on as much as could be), and he has mostly kept his avant-garde/boundary pushing mentality (which Lennon gets more credit for in the Beatles days, but really wasn't the case).

To exclude the Beatles existence when assessing McCartney's work is quite a hard thing to do, but if I pretend none of the Beatles catalogue exists, and McCartney appeared as a late blossoming talent, I (and I think the world) would still rate/rank him pretty darn highly. Win or lose, sink or swim, one thing is certain, he'll never give in. Side by side, hand in hand... we all stand together… oops, I didn't mean to mention that…

A few days late with my write-up submittal. But, it was pretty easy to count on the Eagles placing lower than 100.

Here's the narrative that I submitted to bleupanda:

Founding members Glenn Frey (guitars, vocals), Don Henley (drums, vocals), Bernie Leadon (guitars, vocals), and Randy Meisner (bass guitar, vocals) were recruited by Linda Ronstadt in 1971 as band members, some touring with her, and all playing on her third solo album.

The Eagles’ first single, "Take It Easy", was written by Frey with his neighbor Jackson Browne. Browne had written the first verse of the song, but got stalled on the second verse after the line "I'm standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona." Frey completed the verse, and Browne carried on to finish the song.

Leadon left the band in 1975 and was replaced with Joe Walsh starting with the Hotel California album.

Randy Meisner left the band in 1977 after suffering from stomach ulcers. The band replaced Meisner with the same musician who had succeeded him in Poco, Timothy B. Schmit,

I have encountered a technical error in the form of having planned to watch a friend play a game tonight while I did the update from my underused laptop.

My laptop, having apparently not been used in over a year, was very unhappy and has taken several hours to process a bunch of updates. I apologize for this delay.

I have made an important edit to the first post

As mentioned, I have added an honorable mentions section to highlight the 18 acts who would have made our list without the 4 controversial users. The thread will continue as normal tomorrow.

I also listed the ranking of the acts these 18 artists would have replaced, but I decided to not directly name them - if you are curious, you must put in the effort (...or wait for someone other than me to share...)

I've just looked up which 18 artist would have dropped from the list and they are mostly obvious, except perhaps #455, #450, #354 and especially #417. From that group I only voted for one: #473, while the 'new' 18 have more favorites. Nonetheless, the 18 we lose contain a lot of artists that would be in many more mainstream polls.

Wonderful, conversating in numbers.
