Barbra Streisand - Memory: 7
I don't like Cats, but this song, while not quite my taste, isn't too bad. Perhaps because it isn't all that typical for Cats and because I learned to know it outside of it's intended context. My mother used to play an Andrew Lloyd Webber compilation a lot (maybe she still does, but not when I'm around) and this one always stuck in my mind. That was probably the original Broadway recording, but unlikely as it may be I prefer the Streisand take as it doesn't have the instrumental interludes that never really worked for me in this particular song.

DRAM, featuring Lil Yachti - Broccoli: 4
If there ever has to be any evidence that I'm not hip with it this song is final proof, as I pretty much do not understand a single sentence in the first half of the song. Do people really get all the slang and references? Are they even slang and references? Are they just words. I know what broccoli is and I like broccoli, but not Broccoli, exactly the type of song that makes me feel like I don't understand an important part of hiphop culture.

What is interesting though, is that the song seems to be as divisive here as the vegetable.

It was only a matter of time before someone with a name like andyramones1234 would organize a punk party. Now that day has come.

I don't really get most of the lyrics but I don't care, that's possibly the most joyful hip-hop song and I find that really endearing and infectious !

A rather typical reggae song, but not in a bad way. It made me reflect on how few female sung songs in the genre I know.

I never knew Will Oldham has also released music under his actual name, but it seems Michel did. It is not available on Spotify in my region, but it might be elsewhere, as I can access it (without being able to listen to it). There is a YouTube-link to be sure.

Wezzo’s picks tend to be good-natured, but today he introduces us to one that insulted the Irish school system and Elton John.

229. Brian McFadden – Irish Son - 9.5 [now my #314]
Not anticipating a good reaction to this one, but for me it's the ultimate Guy Chambers-penned tune, stronger even than the best of his work with Robbie Williams, and one of the best pop songs of its decade. Its (fairly tame, let's face it) jibes at the conservative politics of Ireland felt brave from an ex-boyband member at the time.

The Irish school system must have been particularly spineless if they couldn't handle a soft song like this. It sounds rather lifeless to me.

In a strange coincidence (?) Dexter follows Wezzo for the second time in a row in this game. He brings us a song from The Sound of Music. I think the movie version is the one in our public conscious, but Dexter actually picked a version by the original Broadway cast.

230. Mary Martin – Do-Re-Mi
Year: 1959
Album: The Sound of Music [Original Broadway Cast]
Biggest Fan: Dexter (#599)

I do admit I have some attachment to the Julie Andrews version, but almost as a kind novelty song to enjoy with the kids. But listening to this as a stand alone music, it's certainly harder to enjoy.

My rating system really doesn't work with this song. I appreciate the craft in the writing, and this performance is well acted; and as Gillingham said, it's hard to enjoy on its own. That said, I suppose we're here rating songs and not scenes. I give this a 2 as a song, but see me when we're ranking musical numbers.

Mary Martin – Do-Re-Mi: 2
I have no problems rating musical songs on their own. Many of them are still pretty great. But this is The Sound of Music, a musical I despise. It is also one of the worst songs for me on the soundtrack. It doesn't help that I also dislike about 90% of songs for little children and this is obviously one of those. Simply put, this is not for me, even if I think Martin's voice is better than Andrews'.
