Biggest Fan Songs - 2nd Edition: 201 - 300

Post by Rob »

Hey, it's a new topic for Biggest Fan 2nd Edition, where we can daily rate picks #201 to #300.

For those new here, the rules are simple. Every day I post a single random song from all the entries to the 2021 Best Songs of All Time Poll from this very forum. What makes these songs unique is that they only got one vote. That's right, according to the poll, these songs have only one fan. Perhaps we can change that? We also alternate among people whose songs are used. Although the persons are as random as the songs, everybody who participated in the poll gets a song here until everyone had their turn. Then we start over.

After I post a song you can grade it on a scale from 1 to 10 (0 is not an option and I will count it as a 1). After every 100 songs I'll reveal the current top 100 based on voting averages. If you missed a day, month or year, don't worry: you can always catch up or even change your grade later. There is no real deadline as long as this game is alive. I do change topic after every 100 to keep the topics a bit more manageable, but you can always go back to the older ones. See here below:

1 - 100
101 - 200

And this is the playlist with the songs:

Although the songs from today onward won’t feature in the results in a week or so, there is no time for pause. We’ll see these in the top 100 of when we reach 300. Hopefully.
Anyway, it’s Brad time. Despite having a long, long list of eligible songs it is inevitable that we get something from the Dunedin Sound movement (there were quite a few in the first edition of Biggest Fan). What is the Dunedin Sound? Well, something like this:

201. The Clean – Point That Thing Somewhere Else
Year: 1981
EP: Boodle Boodle Boodle
Biggest Fan: Brad (#998)

Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.

201. The Clean – Point That Thing Somewhere Else: 7
A cool song that basically feels like a work-out for a simmering guitar. The singer sometimes reminds me of Neil Young.

Wezzo gave this a 6 in the other topic.

201. The Clean – Point That Thing Somewhere Else: 9 (has since dropped slightly to #1181 on my AT list)
love the guitar sound; builds off just three chords, but so much texture... like a psychedelic Velvets jam.
The Clean is indeed the epitome of the Dunedin Sound. Tally-Ho!

Dead Can Dance – Threshold: 6
This early Dead Can Dance song is already in their usual style. So a mix between some sort of Middle-Eastern chants with a dancelike yet still folkloric feel. However, in that style this isn't a very special example, just a passable one.

Cesária Evora – Jardim Prometido: 8
Didn't expect the tango influences here. The melody sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't place it. Regardless, it is a wonderful piece of music, with great, subtle vocals.

That’s a cover of “Greenfields” by the Brothers Four (but I’m not sure if the original was recorded by The Easy Riders). That was the favourite song of my father, from a Spanish cover by José Guardiola called “Verde campiña”. I hated it then, my daddy always asked my brother and me to play it with the guitar when we were kids in front of friends and family. But when I heard the melody in the warm voice of Césaria (I didn’t know she covered it) suddenly tears came to my eyes reminding me of my dad. So I had to give it a 9…

Ah, that makes sense! The Brothers Four version is actually in my top 1000, but this is quite the reinvention.

Not the first time I heard a German song that mixes electronics with a pulsing rhythm but Earthy vocals. It's a good mix.

There are few voices that I find more irritating than Danny Brown's. I know he's heralded as a genius in a lot of circles, but I don't get it.

I’m not going to rate it cause I don’t like just rating songs I know and like, but Downward Spiral is a great song! No where near the best from that album tho

Today a song that Gillingham probably discovered on his no doubt numerous surfers’ pajama parties. Or from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.

The Centurions – Bullwinkle, Pt. II: 5
I've played the soundtrack of Pulp Fiction countless of times, as I have done with many Tarantino collections, yet I still always forget this song exists. I do like me some instrumental surf rock, but Bullwinkle, Pt. II just never lifts off. It's mostly a song that now successfully if not remarkably sets the mood for a time and place.

Downward Spiral - 9

I don't know if it's my favorite track on the album (if not, it's pretty close), but it's the perfect introduction to the drug-fueled paranoia that defines the album.

Acroamor breaks his gentle singer/songwriter run on this edition of Biggest Fan with a more pop sound. It’s by a group that has poor conception of how capital letters work.
