The Black Keys – Gotta Get Away: 8
Surely this is a song band at heart, so why are there no more songs on the AM list? Stuff like this is just too catchy.

Father2TheMan, whose forum name has a religious ring to it, brings us today one of the best selling Christian metal bands of all time. It’s a good song to sing along too, apparently.

286. Stryper – Sing-Along Songs
Year: 1986
Album: To Hell with the Devil
Biggest Fan: Father2TheMan (#983)

Well, the great Biggest Fan streak is definitely over for me.

Stryper – Sing-Along Song: 5
I'm not an expert on Christian rock by any means. It's a tradition that rarely seems to leave the USA anyway. Yet what surprises me from all that I did hear is how little inspired it sounds. I'm not even talking about originality so much, but just good songcraft or a feeling of transcendence. Basically, how can a type of music based around spiritual uplift sound so lame. Sing-Along Song is not even among the worst offenders, but it fails to really rouse. Sure, there is indeed a sing-along part and some of the harmonies are nice, but it still ends up being rather dull.

Karyn White - Superwoman: 3
Bad lyrics, over-emotional singing and a plastic yet tinny sound. The worst type of music the eighties had to offer for me.

A little over a week ago we had some confusion about which Chopin Étude Geoffrey had on his list. He hasn’t replied since, so I’ve made the choice to remove the song from the game. That means I grab a new song from Geoffrey’s list. I also renumbered the songs since the Étude to make it correct again. The new pick is by the Spotify averse Joanna Newsom.

288. Joanna Newsom – You Will Not Take My Heart Alive
Year: 2015

We went 131 entries without a song from my list. Way too long, I know. But rest assured, I am back, this time with another film tune, by Vangelis, who died earlier this year. The track was actually a big hit in some European countries, including #1 in The Netherlands. That barely ever happens. And for those who think you can’t judge film music outside the film: I have never seen 1492: Conquest of Paradise and doubt I ever will. By all accounts it is a case of great music written for a terrible film.

289. Vangelis – Conquest of Paradise
Year: 1992

I'll never get what people mean by this. Why is film music harder to judge than classical music, jazz or any instrumental piece? I could understand it if we were talking about short incidental music, but that doesn't really make any lists and usually isn't even put on soundtrack releases. Something like Conquest of Paradise has a clear structure, with an intro that builds, a main melody and a real ending. What is not 'song' about it?

Vangelis – Conquest of Paradise: 10
This would have been in my top 50 in an earlier phase of my life, when an epic sound was synonymous with brilliant music. This view has left me a long time ago, but Conquest of Paradise has held up quite well. A lot of this epic music with it's serious choirs can sound a bit samey, especially since video games in particular started to overuse them, but there is something specific and mysterious about Conquest of Paradise that still makes it feel unique. Maybe it is the piano line, maybe its simply the use of synthesizers. Whatever it is, it sounds like something from a strange and ancient place (despite those synths) that comes back as a foreboding dream. A beautiful piece. Odd to think that this could actually get radio play at one time.

Not to be pedantic, but for one thing, 'songs' are actually meant to be sung, by definition.

More importantly, I do find it hard to judge classical music as well. Jazz and instrumental music slightly less so. I guess mostly because I'm more used to judge those.

But also because classical music is a different beast anyway. The only thing that is more or less set in stone is the score. Every version is different and in many cases none are definite. What performer and what interpretation to choose with so many option? The older the pieces, the harder it gets. Should the performance be historically informed? What about keyboard pieces from a time when modern piano's didn't even exist performed on a grand piano?
Film music on the other hand has the heavy reliance on the film itself. There's a lot of film music that I think is absolutely fantastic. But it's always different when heard out of context. Funnily, with Conquest of Paradise, I personally don't have that connection, because I haven't seen the film either. But I do know the music from way back, so in this case that - in combination with it being instrumental non-pop music - might actually mostly be the reason why it's hard to judge for me. I tried anyway though.

Thanks for your explanation, but I fear I do have to be pedantic back, because Conquest of Paradise is sung. The vocals are actually rather prominent. I don't know what they are on about, but that's neither here nor there.

The Divine Comedy - Bath: 3
I have talked before about my inexplicable dislike of Neil Hannon's ironic dandy vocals, but it gets worse if those are married to what feel like very voyeuristic lyrics about a naked woman in a bath. No amount of big words can change that. In fact, they make it worse. Sure this is musically solid, but I kind of hate it regardless.

Got a reply from Geoffrey about the version of the Chopin Etude.
Geoffrey wrote: Wed Nov 09, 2022 10:27 pm Hello! Sorry for the late reply only seeing this now, I was referring to the Étude No. 1 from Op. 10 “Waterfall” in C major. Hope that clears up any confusion :)
Maybe we can include it on a later date during the fifth cycle?

The second movie theme this week, this time not from my list, but from a movie I love dearly (it’s a 10 out of 10 film). Musically speaking Midnight Cowboy may be best remembered for Harry Nilsson’s version of Everybody’s Talkin’, but here sonofsamiam makes a case for the main theme.

291. John Barry Orchestra, featuring Toots Thielemans – Theme from “Midnight Cowboy”
Year: 1969
