Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 13 - Round 1.14
1. Beta Band – The Three E.P.'s (1998) vs. Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow (1975)
I really quite dislike Beck's 70s instrumental-made-for-movies music. No contest against one of the better indie-psychedelic Scottish band ever
2.Malcolm McLaren - Duck Rock (1983) vs. UNKLE - Psyence Fiction (1998)
Not unpleasant from McLaren, but disjointed - I could really hear the Jah Wobble's world music influence on some tracks. Not enough to trump UNKLE's best album
3. The Detroit Escalator Co. - Soundtrack [313] (1996) vs.Odetta - At Carnegie Hall (1960)
Two discoveries here, and a clear winner with the atmospheric Detroit Escalator Co, although Odetta's voice is something to remember.
4.Fela Ransome-Kuti and The Africa '70 with Ginger Baker - Live! (1971) vs. Wire - Mind Hive (2020)
In spite of losing against the post punk renewal of Wire (which they kind of invented anyway), I found the drum solo on Live! absolutely INCREDIBLE.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 13 - Round 1.14
Beta Band – The Three E.P.'s (1998) > Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow (1975)
Malcolm McLaren - Duck Rock (1983) < UNKLE - Psyence Fiction (1998)
The Detroit Escalator Co. - Soundtrack [313] (1996) < Odetta - At Carnegie Hall (1960)
Fela Ransome-Kuti and The Africa '70 with Ginger Baker - Live! (1971) < Wire - Mind Hive (2020)
- Three EPs is really good but is also one of the first albums I listened to for a forum game, the 1998 poll a few years back.
- Odetta blew me away, this is an incredible singer and performer.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 13 - Round 1.14
Fantastic weak. Everything is pretty great. And I don't just say that because there are two of my own nominations in play here.
5. Beta Band – The Three E.P.'s (1998) vs. 6. Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow (1975)
3. Malcolm McLaren - Duck Rock (1983) vs. 8. UNKLE - Psyence Fiction (1998)
2. The Detroit Escalator Co. - Soundtrack [313] (1996) vs. 2. Odetta - At Carnegie Hall (1960)
4. Fela Ransome-Kuti and The Africa '70 with Ginger Baker - Live! (1971) vs. 7. Wire - Mind Hive (2020)
Some thoughts:
- Match-up 3 are both my nominations, which ensures that I have at least one album in the running next round. That album will be up against the one album I can't listen to, Hildegard Knef's Reform Sessions, meaning I can't defend my own nomination... I see how it is.
Regardless, these are two polar opposites, as one of them is entirely instrumental (or electronic if you will) and the other relies on vocals. Soundtrack creates a fantastic mood for city landscapes, while Odetta has one of the great folk voices. Her song Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child just clinches the win, as that one sends chills down my spine.
- The Three E.P.'s is a more strange album than I expected. Among the more famous songs there is some experimental stuff. Not everything is equally interesting, but it has some great heights.
- Duck Rock reminds me of The Avalanches. Of course it is produced very differently, but something in its exotic sound mixed with the anything goes mentality makes for a comparison.
- Mind Hive is a good album for a band that has gone on for so long. It doesn't add up against Pink Flag or Chairs Missing, but is pretty cool. No match for peak Fela Kuti though.
