Music of the Early Years: Best Songs 1953+1954 /// Best Albums 1900-1954

Post by Schüttelbirne »

There will be two polls this month:

a) Best Songs from the years 1953 and 1954
b) Best Albums from the start of recorded albums until the year 1954

I will be using a rather open definition of albums, which might also include albums shelved under compilations.
Albums released in multiple volumes can be voted for in different entries or as one entry, but not both. (Meaning you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, Vol. 1 and/or Dust Bowl Ballads Vol. 2 OR you can vote for Dust Bowl Ballads, but you can not have Vol. 1 and the compilation of both on your list).

The minimum for lists to be counted is five entries; the point system is as follows:

1 – 50
2 – 45
3 – 40
4 – 36
5 – 32
6 – 28
7 – 25
8 – 22
9 – 19
10 – 16
11 – 14
12 – 13
13 – 12
14 – 11
15 – 10
16 – 9
17 – 8
18 – 7
19 – 6
20 – 5

You can post longer lists if you want to; there are always great discoveries to be made!

Classical music is only eligible in movements!

Please make sure to make a new post here if you change your list. I'm compiling throughout the month and won't realize you've changed your list unless you say so.

Next month we'll move on to 1955.

Deadline for this is the end of the month, June 30.

If there's any questions, let me now.

Have fun and happy listening!

Provisional list. I'll try to expand the songs list and come with a 1900-1954 albums list before the deadline...

ALBUMS:

1. CHET BAKER "Chet Baker Sings" (1954, #70 in my all-time list)
As indispensable for a romantic rendez-vous as candlelights or champagne. A music that floats in the air as light as a feather and creates an atmosphere capable of melting the ice of the coldest heart, a voice so near, so natural, so vulnerable and so intimate whispering sad love songs into your lover's ear. But be careful: she could fall in love with Chet instead of you.

2. GEORGES BRASSENS "Chante les chansons poétiques (…et souvent gaillardes)" (1953, #156)
Chanson. Inside this fascinating, underated and heterogeneous style (you can find there too the melodramatic Brel, the enfant terrible Gainsbourg and the poetic Ferré), Brassens played the sarcastic ("Le gorille"), combative ("La mauvaise réputation"), humorous ("Hécatombe") but also tender ("Le parapluie"), an idiosyncratic voice with a spare music backing.

3. GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET "Gerry Mulligan Quartet (Fantasy)" (1953)
4. DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH "Symphony No. 10 in E Minor" (1954)

Ok I admit if there is any period of time I haven heard many albums from it is this. However I wanted to list two albums I return to somewhat often.

1. Lead Belly - Negro Sinful Songs

My parents are big on the blues. My dad even produced a documentary in the 90s about Chicago blues artist Jr. Wells and got to meet many blues legends. Admittedly I haven't heard many blues albums in full but have heard a great amount of blues tracks and blues standards and am quite familiar with the work of Robert Johnson. A big reason why I have been hesitant to listen to and document blues albums on my site is partly that I am never quite sure how to go about talking about it since many of them are so old and detached from modern standards. But I have decided to rate them based not only on my personal enjoyment but how significant some of these old blues albums are to some of my favorite music. As one of the oldest albums on this forum (Albumoftheyear) that seem to follow the traditional LP/Album format we all know and love, I wanted to give this album a solid listen. Lead Belly has a timbre in his voice that is quite somber and eerie, though that could also have to do with the old recording quality. It adds a sense of identity and emotion to these tracks, many of which I believe are standards, that other vocalists don't always capture. At just a little over half an hour, these ten tracks come together nicely for an album that once again seems to be one of the earliest examples of an album in the modern sense/definition and it a great segway for me to discover more complete blues albums outside of the standards many of us are familiar with.

2. Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads

Though I don't listen to folk all the time, I usually am pretty warm towards it and this is no exception. It is a solid album that also is one of the oldest true LP's on this entire site so I figured I would check it out and for it's time, I like it very much!

Bumping this.

Also: I only have two album lists, and both Brad and Honorio have announced they would post a list.
I hope some other album lists will come in, four is a bit meager.
Of course, you have time until the end of the month and I don't mean to pressure anybody. :-)
