1. Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition (2016) vs. Stan Kenton - New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm (1953)
Really not a fan of either. Surprised than Atrocity Exhibition is #1 for 2016 in RYM.
2. Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me (2001) vs.Gotan Project - La revancha del tango (2001)
Nice discovery with Gotan Project, but can't beat a classic British Hip Hop album.
3.John Luther Adams - Become Ocean (2014) vs. The Divine Comedy - Promenade (1994)
The most difficult match up this week. John Luther Adams is soothing but the Divine Comedy takes up the crown, for variety reasons
4. Jimmy Eat World - Clarity (1999) vs.Louis and Bebe Barron - Forbidden Planet (1978)
Forbidden Planet is just too bizarre on its own

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 13 - Round 1.8
Jimmy Eat World is so cringe I would vote for pretty much any other album over it.
Lyrics like "I'll miss you when you're like them".
This is an album for angry narcissistic teenagers who falsely consider themselves nonconformists.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 13 - Round 1.8
On the flip-side, this from Wire magazine's "100 Records That Set The World On Fire [When No One Was Listening]":
Louis & Bebe Barron - Forbidden Planet OST
(Small Planet 1956)
By the time MGM got around to asking Louis and Bebe Barron to compose an electronic soundtrack for their prestige sci-fi presentation, Forbidden Planet, the husband and wife team had already worked with John Cage, Anais Nin, Aldous Huxley and Maya Deren. Mimicking Norbert Weiner's experiments involving negative and positive feedback in stressed animals, the Barrons had learned to make electrical circuits literally 'shriek', reprocessing the results through careful tape manipulation into extremely rich and varied electroacoustic soundscapes. Having supplied not only the film's music but its alien sound effects as will, the Barrons had to abide by the studio's decision to list their contribution as 'electronic tonalities' in the credits out of fear that the Musicians' Union might sue. This unfortunate trivializing of their pioneering work might explain why the Forbidden Planet album became such a relatively rare and neglected item. Harsh, metallic, and cavernous, the future never sounded this good again.

7. Jimmy Eat World - Clarity (1999) vs. 6. Louis and Bebe Barron - Forbidden Planet (1978)
A couple of thoughts:
- I never expected that Danny Brown would be my thing, but listening to a full album for the first time he really clicks with me. Both his rapping and the music are very creative and fun. It has a massive competitor in Stan Kenton, who would win most matchups in this game, but not this one.
- In a good week for hip-hop Roots Manuva also got to me with a more danceable take on the genre. Sadly, it is a little outclassed by Gotan Project who prove to me that for some reason revisionist tango albums on Moderately Acclaimed are always a welcome addition.
- The Divine Comedy remains annoying for me. There is something off-putting about the slimy dandy act of Neil Harron that not even irony can disguise. Also, the almost six minute name-dropping of authors is beyond pretentious, not helped by following it up with a song that name drops sea food. To be fair, putting it that way the contrast seems funny, but by the time we got around it my patience had worn out.
- Jimmy Eat World are the most generic rock band of their time. Change my mind.
- Louis & Bebe Barron on the other hand are the least generic soundtrack artists of their time. This feels more like sounds than music, but even close to seventy years later it feels very alien. It's not something I would listen to a lot, though it admittedly changes to feel of your room when it is on. The artists seem to have fun naming the tracks that feature Robby the Robot, with titles like Robby Arranges Flowers, Zaps Monkey and Robby, the Cook, and 60 Gallons of Booze. Makes it sound like a more wacky film than it is. Anyway, the film is highly recommended. Also, I once bought a vinyl of this soundtrack just for the look of it:

The results will be immediately up. But before, and since we are getting to the mid point on the Round 1, let me bring back a feature I used to do on past editions of the MAA poll, to showcase the female artists on our list. Sorry if in these non-binary times this may sound simplistic, sexist or even paternalistic, it's only my honest tribute to these artists and musicians. Anyway here they go...
Sade Adu (Sade)
Ana Matronic (Scissor Sisters)
Annarella Giudici (CCCP Fedeli alla Linea)
Arina Ephipania Simangunsong (Mocca)
Ellen Waddell, Aleksandra Berditchevskaia, Harriet Coleman (Los Campesinos!)

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 13 - Round 1.8
Yes. Forbidden Planet is in the category of albums that are so far outside my wheelhouse I don’t feel qualified to rate, so I abstain unless the opponent is over 85 or under 60.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 13 - Round 1.8
Oops, sorry then. Your vote would have created a tie on the last bracket but, since your vote was not clearly stated in your post (or at least I didn't understand it like that) and I posted the results 24 hours ago, I think I'm going to keep "Clarity" as the winner. Sorry for that...

Jimmy Ate the Forbidden Planet

I thought it was clear just by putting it on the left side with the rest of the winners.Honorio wrote: ↑Tue May 24, 2022 2:26 pmOops, sorry then. So we have a tie between Jimmy Eat World - Clarity and Louis and Bebe Barron - Forbidden Planet with 8 votes each. As usual, next vote from someone who has not already voted for this match-up win.
