Music of the Early Years: Best Songs 1950-1952

Post by Schüttelbirne »

Going from summarizing entire decades, we will now focus on the three-year period of 1950 to 1952.

This topic is about your favorite songs of the 1950, 1951 and 1952. The minimum for lists to be counted is five entries; the point system is as follows:

1 – 50
2 – 45
3 – 40
4 – 36
5 – 32
6 – 28
7 – 25
8 – 22
9 – 19
10 – 16
11 – 14
12 – 13
13 – 12
14 – 11
15 – 10
16 – 9
17 – 8
18 – 7
19 – 6
20 – 5

You can post longer lists if you want to; there are always great discoveries to be made!

Classical music is only eligible in movements! Please don't vote for Francis Poulenc's Stabat Mater, but rather for Francis Poulenc | "Stabat Mater: I. Stabat mater dolorosa".

Please make sure to make a new post here if you change your list. I'm compiling throughout the month and won't realize you've changed your list unless you say so.

Next month there will be two poll:
a) Best Songs 1953+1954
b) Best Albums 19xx-1954

Deadline for this is the end of the month, May 31.

Have fun and happy listening!

Provisional list:

ALBUMS:

1. DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA "Masterpieces by Ellington" (1951, #113 of all time)
Technology influences art. Every technological advance changes the way of creating music and, as the mic allowed the singers to whisper directly into you ear, the long play albums allowed musicians to express themselves out of the jail of the 3 minutes single. Ellington sounded in his first album (46 minutes, 4 songs) like a just released prisoner running free.

2. HANK WILLIAMS "Moanin' the Blues" (1952, #132)
I'm aware that it's really a compilation but it could work as a concept album, as in fact every one of the first Hank Williams albums: "Sings" set (the woods) on fire while "Memorial" was his testament, "Luke the Drifter" showed his spiritual side while "Ramblin' Man" his wild side. In "Moanin' the Blues" he portrayed with sharp precission despair, loneliness and... blues.

3. CHARLIE PARKER & DIZZY GILLESPIE "Bird and Diz" (1952, #243)

4. ELLA FITZGERALD "Ella Sings Gershwin" (1950)
5. FRANK SINATRA "Sing and Dance With Frank Sinatra" (1950)
6. GENE KELLY, DONALD O’CONNOR & DEBBIE REYNOLDS "Singin' in the Rain" (1952)
7. THELONIOUS MONK "Genius of Modern Music" (1951)
8. YMA SUMAC "Voice of the Xtabay" (1950)
9. CHARLIE PARKER "Charlie Parker with Strings" (1950)
10. BILLIE HOLIDAY "Billie Holiday Sings" (1952)
11. EDITH PIAF "La vie en rose" (1952)
12. BUD POWELL "The Amazing Bud Powell" (1951)
13. GEORGE GERSHWIN "Complete Porgy & Bess (Studio Cast)" (1951)
14. JOHN CAGE "String Quartet in Four Parts" (1951)
15. WOODY GUTHRIE "Songs to Grow On, Vol. 1: Nursery Days" (1951)
16. LES BAXTER "Le sacre du sauvage (Ritual of the Savage)" (1951)
17. MACHITO "Afro-Cuban Jazz" (1951)
18. THELONIOUS MONK "Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 2" (1952)
19. HANK WILLIAMS & HIS DRIFTING COWBOYS "Hank Williams Sings" (1951)
20. MILES DAVIS "Young Man With a Horn" (1952)
21. NAT 'KING' COLE "Penthouse Serenade: Nat 'King' Cole at the Piano" (1952)
22. LES PAUL & MARY FORD "Les Paul's New Sound, Vol. 2" (1951)
23. JOHNNIE RAY "Johnnie Ray" (1952)
24. LOUIS ARMSTRONG "Satchmo Serenades" (1952)
25. ARACY DE ALMEIDA "Noel Rosa" (1950)

SONGS:

1. GEORGES BRASSENS "La mauvaise réputation" (1952, #198 in my all-time list)
Protest songs can be funny. Georges Brassens wrote a semi-autobiographical song with "La mauvaise réputation" ("Bad Reputation") about growing up in a little village feeling different to other people. And he made it his signature piece, an humorous anarchist chant. You know, good folks don't like it if you take a different road than they do.

2. HANK WILLIAMS & HIS DRIFTING COWBOYS "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" (1950, #238)
So lonesome he could cry. Almost every root style made art from sorrow and pain, the best examples could be blues and flamenco but also tango or bolero. And country music, of course, with Hank Williams showcasing his command on yodeling and painting the perfect portrait of loneliness and despair, just like his own death on the back seat of a Cadillac. Alone. And blue.

3. GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET "My Funny Valentine" (1952)
This version is usually (and wrongly) credited to Chet Baker. But, unfairly enough, for me the highlight of the track is the Mulligan part. The Quartet had no piano or guitar so the harmonic counterpoint was given by Mulligan’s baritone sax, playing heavenly harmonies intertwining with the trumpet and not abandoning a humble background till his own solemn and brief solo.

4. ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (1950)
Just the first 15 seconds (a few notes of Armstrong trumpet and a brief scat by Fitzgerald) are enough to know that this is something exceptional, a prodigious of chemistry between Ella and Louis. To be packed with other two memorable duets, being joyful (Tom Jobim and Elis Regina in "Aguas de Março") or gloomy (Tindersticks with Carla Torgeson in "Travellin' Light").

5. GENE KELLY "Singin' in the Rain" (1952)
6. LES PAUL & MARY FORD "How High the Moon" (1951)
7. JACKIE BRENSTON & HIS DELTA CATS "Rocket "88"" (1951)

Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind

I've been thinking about how to deal with albums which were released in multiple volumes.
Examples would be Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads, Art Blakey's A Night at Birdland, Lester Young's With the Oscar Peterson Trio but also things like The Amazing Bud Powell and Genius of Modern Music.
My main problem is that each of these volumes would be eligible for a spot on the albums list, but I'm pretty sure there will be people who combine multiple volumes into one spot. I can't just use AM as "master list", since the Art Blakey albums have two entries (for Vols. 1 & 2, Vol. 3 is not mentioned) while the Young albums are combined into one entry and the existence of volumes regarding the Guthrie albums is not even acknowledged.
I'm sure this is because the lists upon which the AM list is based feature these albums like this, so I'm not complaining. I just think we could be a bit more diligent. But I also realize that many people probably do not vote for the original version of an album, but rather for a compilation of the different volumes released at a later date.

A suggestion I thought of: I will count votes for individual volumes; votes for an album which combines multiple volumes will be added to each individual volume. If one volume gets enough votes to make it into the Top 10 by itself while the other volume doesn't, only that volume will be considered for the final list. However if both volumes make the Top 10 they will be combined and one more entry will make the final list.

Is this okay for everybody?
