Re: Biggest Fan - 2nd Edition: 101 to 200
Today’s song was inspired by Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but it seems that none of the band members noticed that the actress there was names Audrey, not Aubrey. Later, actress Aubrey Plaza would be named after this song; her parents spelled it right.
Now you’re probably telling me: “Rob, Bread is classic soft rock and if there is one thing in the world I am too cool for it is classic soft rock”. And then I say: “But you define your coolness by your appreciation of Vampire Weekend, don’t you? And their very popular song Step, that you probably ranked on your all time-list is based on a melody the band heard in a saxophone sample from the song Step to My Girl by hip-hop group Souls of Mischief. That sample comes from a Grover Washington Jr. cover of Bread’s Aubrey. So who is cool now?” Someone who isn’t afraid to admit to liking Bread is stone37 and we should follow his brave example. Or not, if you still feel too cool for it.
107. Bread - Aubrey
Year: 1972
Album: Guitar Man
Biggest Fan: stone37 (#847)

I am grateful that this song named one of my favorite actresses so I’ll give Aubrey a 7.

A sentimental song for sure, but it never overstates its emotions. It's fine, but its weird legacy is almost too great for what it is.

It's got a nice beat and rhythm I guess, but this is the kind of hip-hop that generally doesn't appeal to me.

Re: Biggest Fan - 2nd Edition: 101 to 200
So, I suddenly finding myself on an unexpected travel trip tomorrow that lasts until Sunday. Since I don't think it likely I will be much online I'll post the coming four songs already today. This also means I can't share results for the first 100 songs this weekend, so that will be post-poned by a week. (And for those who care: the MegaCritic highlights will not be done until Monday).
For Thursday:
Pile or no pile (you decide), today we get another styrofoamboots selection, with a song from an album beloved on RYM (and as far as I can tell an unknown quantity anywhere else).
109. Brave Little Abacus – Pile! No Pile! Pile!
Year: 2010
Album: Just Got Back from the Discomfort – We’re Alright
Biggest Fan: styrofoamboots (#367)
Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.
For Friday:
The song of the day is from Karla’s top 10! It also has over a billion streams on Spotify! And… I have never heard of it, nor of the artists involved. Having said that, neither the song nor the artists can be found on Acclaimed Music, so it not all my fault part 2.
110. Bebe Rexha, featuring Florida George Line – Meant to Be
Year: 2017
EP: All Your Fault, Pt. 2
Biggest Fan: Karla (#7)
Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.
Saturday:
Revanche for antonius after his disqualified second song. This is his true second entry.
111. Carla Bozulich, featuring Marc Ribot – End of the World
Year: 2018
Album: Quieter
Biggest Fan: antonius (#509)
Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.
Sunday:
Musicman takes you to a town today with a song that ranks on AM #4303.
112. Rufus Wainwright – Going to a Town
Year: 2007
Album: Release the Stars
Biggest Fan: musicman (#370)

On my extended list. I've heard some modern country that's used some pop moves -- more than fine with me.

I'm not familiar with this album but I was happy to hear a similar sound to This Is The Sea
105. Arcade Fire – We Don’t Deserve Love - 4
106. Boy & Bear – Fall at Your Feet - 9
So there are two of these Finn cover albums, a She and a He (taken from the name of one of Neil's songs). They're a real mixed bag but worth a listen in my view - other recs are "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" by Little Birdy and "One Step Ahead" by Amiel.
On the song itself, it's probably the best cover on the album and supports my theory that Crowded House songs are only a hair removed from country songs.
107. Bread - Aubrey - 3
A big ol' hunk of plain white Bread. Not my favourite.
108. Fabolous – You Be Killin Em - 5
109. Brave Little Abacus – Pile! No Pile! Pile! - 4

Re: Biggest Fan - 2nd Edition: 101 to 200
Tom Waits becomes the second artist to have two songs in, with today’s Safetycat cut. People who can’t stand Waits’ hoarse voice might want to pay attention, as this was made before he developed his signature singing style.
113. Tom Waits – Grapefruit Moon
Year: 1973
Album: Closing Time
Biggest Fan: Safetycat (#688)

Brave Little Abacus – Pile! No Pile! Pile!: 5
One of those songs I would like to give higher because at least it dares to be something different. I don't really enjoy it though. A mawkish singing style like this can work in the right spots, but the randomness of it in relation of the music (which I do like) gets grating. I could see this being one of those types of songs that could suddenly click with me, but we're not there yet.
Bebe Rexha, featuring Florida George Line – Meant to Be: 2
This has to be one of the most minimum-effort pop songs in history. It's music and lyrics are so slight that even as a sing-along it becomes obnoxious long, long before the end. That's quite the achievement for such a short song, as Gillingham already said.
Carla Bozulich, featuring Marc Ribot – End of the World: 7
A very nice mood piece. Lightly enthralling.
Rufus Wainwright - Going to a Town: 7
I used to hate this song when it was a regular on radio. The bored singing style was just too grating, no matter that he's singing of being tired. I didn't want to have anything to do with Wainwright since. Hearing it again I can now appreciate it more, especially the baroque pop music. I also feel like I can relate to it more now.
Tom Waits - Grapefruit Moon: 8
This whole album is a gem. This is a lesser known song from there, but hardly lesser in quality.

There might be a few Waits songs coming down the pipeline from my list. I absolutely adore this album front to back.

It’s always nice to get a song that didn’t exist yet when we had our last Biggest Fan, as is the case today. DaveC picked a song from an album that won the Moderately Acclaimed Album of the Year poll back then. How does the song rank?

From one of my top 100 albums. The songs on it are very varied and this is a relatively poppy one, even if it won't make mainstream radio too soon. Meredith's singing voice isn't all that great, but the song easily survives based on the, well, patterns that make up the structure of the composition.
