Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
As mentioned previously, I would like each artist that lands in our top 100 to have at least one write-up from a forum member. The purpose of these write-ups is to express why these artists deserve their placements. Artists can have more than one write-up, and you can even write about your favorite acts that will almost certainly fall outside the top 100 (as long as they land in the top 500...)
Please post here if you are willing to contribute along with the artists you would like to cover. I am copying the top 150 artists according to our last poll - I figure most of our top 100 will come from this range, which will make it easy to plan ahead. Once someone has claimed an artist, I will mark the list as such. For example, I'll claim LCD Soundsystem now.
I think the ideal word count is in the 150-200 range. Longer also works, but I think a cap of 500 is appropriate. Basically, hit the highlights but leave the biographical details to Wikipedia (unless those details are key to understanding their music).
The deadline for these will be July 31 (or whatever the current deadline is for the poll), so that I can have them in time for the presentation. I'm sure a few artists might slip through the cracks, so I will outright ask people who are contributing for help filling in the gaps as we near the deadline.
Send me the write-ups through PMs.
(If you are looking to submit your list, head to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10927 )

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
On first spontaneous thought I'll take these:
30. Miles Davis
55. John Coltrane
131. Charles Mingus
136. Duke Ellington
144. King Crimson
Davis is the only one where I've listened to basically every album, but I think I'll be able to catch up with the other ones.
I might write about Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground too, but don't put me down for that.
I don't know how you plan to do the presentation (or if you already know yourself), but will everyone's number 1 be listed separately like in the AT albums and songs polls? Because my number 1 will probably be Cecil Taylor, and he didn't make the Top 500 last time. I would still like to write about him, though.
Thanks for organizing this! I think comments will really add a lot to the presentation.

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
Yeah, I'll make sure to include the #1s that do not place at the top. Really, if someone does write something about an artist that ends up not making the top 500, even if it is not their #1, I will probably still list it in the honorable mentions (within reason).Schüttelbirne wrote: ↑Tue Feb 22, 2022 5:47 pm I don't know how you plan to do the presentation (or if you already know yourself), but will everyone's number 1 be listed separately like in the AT albums and songs polls? Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
From the final top 10:
The Beatles
David Bowie
Bob Dylan
The Rolling Stones
R.E.M.
Prince
Other names:
Black Sabbath
The Doors
Nirvana
Frank Sinatra
Sonic Youth
Bruce Springsteen
U2
Neil Young
If if it's in my top 10 (except for Oingo Boingo), I might as well write about them. There are names not here where I was on the biggest fan list, but in last place; I might hold off, since 14 write-ups is plenty already. Other people are certainly welcome to write about top names like the Beatles, etc., so I don't even have to act like I'm handling "the official write-up."

I'll start with these four and take more later if there's still unfilled slots:
Jimi Hendrix
John Coltrane
Joni Mitchell
Sleater-Kinney

If we’re all taking a couple names, I’d love Kendrick Lamar as well

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
I quietly claimed Sufjan in addition to LCD Soundsystem but figured I should say that out loud.
As this progresses, I will put artists in bold as I receive their write-ups. Obviously, no rush or anything considering we have several months - just wanted to make the plan clear.

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
Well, I guess I might as well commit to something now so I can plan ahead and if for whatever reason I find out down the line that I won't have time I'll let you know far in advance:
3. Radiohead
9. Led Zeppelin
47. Marvin Gaye
53. Brian Eno
76. OutKast
84. Public Enemy
108. Metallica
109. Beyonce
115. Jay-Z
147. Frank Ocean
Also did Sam Cooke seriously not make it into our top 150 last time? I would definitely consider writing for him too if I get through these ten first.

FrankLotion taking Frank Ocean? Andyd1010 taking Arcade Fire? Krurze taking Kraftwerk? Live in Phoenix taking David Bowie? All of these are shocking and unprecedented.

I'll take Taylor Swift... just kidding.
Would it be useful for me to contribute a write-up for Kanye West, and maybe a couple others, even if I don't plan on participating in this event? (Surely Edre has plenty to say in my stead.)

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
As long as write-ups stick to the expression of why this artist belongs here, sure. I feel like Kanye is a particularly tricky case here, since even as someone who is likely to put him in my top 20, it's hard for me to ignore the persona (though, I guess we're lucky that a lot of his music is about that persona, so it can easily be tied in).ProjectTermina wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 2:25 am I'll take Taylor Swift... just kidding.

Also, I would not be surprised at all if Taylor Swift has one of the bigger jumps since 2019! (And your participation would probably help that become a reality)

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
I'll do for now Swans, Radiohead, and Coldplay as I feel most comfortable with their work.
I actually did my own write ups for my individual picks in 2016 in Hope's they would be included, but they never were. Oh well.

I'm waiting for someone to double any of my picks -- meanwhile, Swans are popular as fuck.

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
Question on the write-ups. Are they a general synopsis of the artist or more of what they mean to the writer?
There are a couple of artists not on the list that possibly could crack the Top 200 I may also be interested in.

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
Well, maybe I can throw a top 50 artists together. I'll have to think about what that means to me. You would be getting it closer to the end of the deadline.BleuPanda wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 2:33 pmAs long as write-ups stick to the expression of why this artist belongs here, sure.
Would it be useful for me to contribute a write-up for Kanye West, and maybe a couple others, even if I don't plan on participating in this event? (Surely Edre has plenty to say in my stead.)
Also, I would not be surprised at all if Taylor Swift has one of the bigger jumps since 2019! (And your participation would probably help that become a reality)
In any case, I'll write up what's great about the work of Kanye, Sigur Ros, and My Bloody Valentine. And Taylor Swift, if it's called for.
Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
I think 'what they mean to the writer' is the better path. Why do you consider <band> one of the best ever? Any of us can go on Wikipedia and learn about the history and critical reception of <band>. But why do you listen to them? What makes them stand above other artists to you? What is that unique trait that no other artist captures?CupOfDreams wrote: ↑Wed Feb 23, 2022 4:48 pm Question on the write-ups. Especially since multiple people might be writing about the same artist. If everyone wrote a synopsis, everyone would be giving the same information in a slightly different package.

I can do Queen.
Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
We would have liked to do the one for John Coltrane, or maybe Charles Mingus but as we see they've already been claimed, we'll stand back. Should Eric Dolphy make the list, we'll gladly write a tribute for him though our list seems to have got lost in the shuffle, at least I can't find it anymore, which probably means he won't stand a chance.

I can take joy division!

Re: Write-ups for the AMF Top Artists 2022 Edition
I have received the first two write-ups so figured I would bump this (you still have several months to get these in, so don't rush). I updated both lists, and we are already down to only 38 artists without any claims.
In fact, I'll go ahead and claim Smashing Pumpkins and Daft Punk
