Nassim wrote: Thu Nov 03, 2022 1:30 pm So any idea which songs are going to dominate the EOY lists ? My only safe bet is Billions.
Two points I’d like to make, one objective and one subjective.

1. Objective: The critics have been moving in a more poptimism direction over the past 10 years or so. To say this should be fairly non-controversial.

2. Subjective: This has been a really great year for US #1 singles. On my rough 2022 songs list there are a grand total of 5 #1s: As It Was, Bad Habit, About Damn Time, Break My Soul, and Anti-Hero.

So this combination of popular songs that are also good (in my opinion of course), should produce a handful of EOY contenders. I’d like to think the following are all strong contenders for the top 5 slot on our critics list:

Bad Habit, As It Was, About Damn Time, Break My Soul, and The Weeknd’s “Out of Time”.

But we’ll see!

"This Is How It Works" has been a contender for my song of the year since my second listen. Haven't seen anybody repping for it here. Give it a fair shake, fair reader!

About Damn Time is surprisingly very good and I hope to see it pull the top 10 on the EOY list.

I don't really have a favourite song list or album list for this year or last year but Caroline Polachek's "Billions" is looking to be my definate favourite song for this year. It's sensual, ethereal and exhilarating.

But what's looking to be another standout for me this year is the new song "Strong" by Romy Croft and Fred Again. Not only did they bring back the sound of the late 1990s and 2000s ethereal vocal trance perfectly but they've made a dance song with some high energy and fast tempo that many dance songs over the last 11 years hasn't been for me . Especially 2018 and 2020.

And here it is! https://youtu.be/3aFF09jjZwk

I'm actually going through my 2022 playlist at the moment to compile my EOY list and it's taking forever.
So until I'm finished with that, a few selections from the past few months:

Zoh Amba | Altar-Flower (Free Jazz, also featuring drum god Tyshawn Sorey)
Jonathan Berger | My Lai: First Landing: Flight (opera)
Cave In | Wavering Angel (alternative metal, a bit cheesy)
Richard Dawson | The Fool
Richard Dawson | The Hermit
Kaja Draksler | Prst, Roka, Laket (solo piano)
Binker Golding | (Take Me to the) Wide Open Lows (jazz with country flavor)
Mary Halvorson | Nodding Yellow (guitar + string quartet)
Herr Horst | Gewese (let's eat the dictator!)
Eres Holz | MACH für Orgel (classical work for solo organ, magnificent)
Kardashev | Silvered Shadow (deathgaze)
Nduduzo Makhathini | Unonkanyamba (jazz from South Africa; I think even non-jazz fans might like this)
Springtime | The Names of the Plague (15 minutes of apocalyptic rock)
Julia Wolfe | Forbidden Love (30 minutes of percussion played on string instruments; sounds far more amazing and is way more accessible than it sounds, very recommended!)

Richard Dawson's new album The Ruby Cord is another amazing display of his talent. Everything I've heard from him has been great, but each album has a different sound. The Magic Bridge is sparse in its instrumentation and sounds a bit like American Primitivism, 2020 goes for a rock sound with electric guitars and now The Ruby Cord creates epic tapestries of sound that start with just a guitar and end with violins and choirs, but it never seems overdone or cheap. "The Hermit" is 40 minutes long, but every minute is filled with greatness. I need to listen again while looking at the lyrics, because it's a concept album about a (sort of) post-apocalyptic future, but with his singing style it's not easy to follow the lyrics.

I don't even have a top 20 yet, but I got an outstanding top 3. Not sure which is going to win, but those songs are fantastic :

Pharrell Williams - Cash In, Cash Out (feat 21 Savage and Tyler, the Creator)
Pharrell has been on a roll lately but he might have outdid himself here, that bouncy beat is sick. 21 Savage's verse is good (though I could do with less "21" and "en garde") but the Tyler the Creator one is outstanding, he makes mid-sentences rhymes over the beat in a way you usually got from MF Doom and jumps from one melody to the next flawlessly.

Sprints - Delia Smith
My favorite rock song in a long while, Delia Smith packs more memorable riffs and vocal melodies than most recent albums.

Plus it's pretty quotable :
"I'd like to think I'm deep
But I just skim the pages, so I can fake my speech"

"Who wants to be special anyway?
Me, fucking me, and I'm not ashamed"

Their more recent single "Literary Mind" will also make my top 10.

Paraglow (Parannoul + Asian Glow)
This 15 minutes epic is like a trip through so many of the music I have listened through the years, from post hardcore and post rock to video game music, folk, nü-metal, 00s indie... I hear Sufjan, Thrice, Car Seat Headrest, Deafheaven, Kashiwa Daisuke, Japanese RPGs boss fights... but somehow it all gels in a coherent masterpiece.

I didn't realize how crazy it is that Beyonce collaborated with Grace Jones on "Move" earlier this year, since Grace Jones almost never collaborates with people and sorta called out Beyonce in her memoir for wanting to be her.

Anyway. Drafting a songs list now. Question for you all -- when you're making a songs list, do you try to keep it to one or two songs per artist, or do you just rank every song honestly, even if that means most of your top 10 is Angel Olsen? Asking for a friend.

Honestly, but more than 5 songs in a top 50 would be very unusual. (Or more than 2 in a top 10.)

I think honesty is the best policy.

Not that this particular problem has ever applied to me.

The only year where I had more than 2 songs from the same artist in my top 10 EOY list was 2019, with Weyes Blood, where her 3 songs ranked:

#1 Andromeda
#4 Movies
#7 Everyday

I suppose in a personal list, for the sake of comparing tastes with other people and playing the game of assessing aesthetic value and truth, it's more interesting to rank songs unfiltered. Whereas a big publication making an EOY list might sensibly choose to allocate each of their limited "slots" to a different artist, knowing that each slot is an opportunity to introduce their audience to an artist's work.

90 songs ranked, 90 to go.

LOL I already feel a little high listening to "Billions", not to mention watching that video. A bit otherworldly. Album's coming out on February 14, new song out today "Welcome to My Island."

Okay, I did it. This isn't my final list for a few reasons:
  • I think when I was ranking some of the Weeknd and 40 Watt Sun tracks I hasn't refreshed my memory enough and was a little too lost in the emotion of the moment. As a result, some of those are too high, I need to rebubble them in a different state of mind. But I stand by "The Spaces in Between" being in my top ten.
  • I have a few songs sitting at the bottom of my spotify playlist waiting to be ranked: "The Worst is Done" by Weyes Blood (didn't give a damn about that album but that song is nice), "Alien Superstar" by Beyonce (still thinking about how much I really love it), "Expert in a Dying Field" by The Beths, and "Spitting Off the Edge of the World" which I just heard today, thanks Future Critic.
  • As is the nature of things, I'll never listen to all the music that came out in 2022. I'm confident I'll find more stuff that I love from this year in future years.
  • The year isn't even over yet actually
Anyway, here's the list:

Bad Habit, As It Was, About Damn Time, Break My Soul, and The Weeknd’s “Out of Time”.

But we’ll see!
In our extremely early EOY list we have Bad Habit, As It Was, and Break My Soul in the top 4. Nice job at predicting things, me.

The Place Where He Inserted the Blade will probably win our poll and miss the critics' top 100. Has there ever been a split like that? The rest of the Internet loves BC,NR too so it's not an AMF special, but rather an interesting divide between music nerds and critics this year.

I really would not be surprised if this is the decade's "Idioteque" or "All Too Well" - an album track the fans immediately pick up on while the critics stick with singles for their EOY lists.

It's going to be between Break My Soul and As It Was like I knew it was going to be when Break My Soul was instantly rank #108 in a best 200 dance songs of all time list not long after it was released and As It Was because it was so well recieved instantly when it was released along with the media trying to build Harry as this generation's icon as if he's the next Bowie - I knew there was no way multiple critics were going to exclude them in order to sustain them an icon status, to the point where both these songs are likely to dominate the Top 3.
I have no idea what other songs will coming their way then, I'd probably would have guessed Angelica and Anti-Hero because they're all I hear about more than many other songs this year besides King.

The critics loved Ants from Up Here as well as far as you can see about the high MegaCritic position of the album. The sudden neglect is so extreme that it almost feels like the band got cancelled, but only the critics know why.

I hope it’s only people not wanting to split votes between them and Jockstrap and February being so long ago. But it does also feel like the whole Post-Brexit-Punk scene is really popular in certain circles (who maybe reviewed the album) but when polling a wider staff, it doesn’t stick.

Pitchfork just put out their Reader's List today, and TPWHITB (not writing the whole title out) placed at #2 on their songs list. Pretty interesting!

That's actually more characters than simply writing the title out. :D

The state breakdown is an interesting bonus, though I guess I wasn't able to pull any info out of it.

What are everyone's favorite mushroom-related songs from this year? Here are my top three, in no particular order:

Björk – Mycelia
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Mycelium
Fresh Pepper – Congee Around Me

BleuPanda told me to make this thread and I told them I didn't think I'd lurked enough, but for Pete's sake someone's got to do it so we can talk about Caroline Polachek. https://klingeltonemp3.info/

This song has everything you could want: religious imagery that's numinously spooky almost to the point of blasphemy, AND cum metaphors. What is this, my honeymoon?

Aforementioned ethereal quality is augmented by Polachek's eerily beautiful voice. Music video adds to the effect as well. Worth a watch!
This is probably one of the best songs I've heard in my life. There are so many unexpected turns but everything still flows so well together, its like a finely detailed layered painting. The chorus and bridge are so unique and the ending is so etherial. Through the complexity of this song everything still feels so blissful and floaty... Just beautiful
