Some new albums in the list or in bubbling.

2. Perfume Genius - Ugly Season (93/100)

Well he def keeps getting better. This is like some S-Teir music. The level of artistry and musician is just off the charts like fr. Im kinda blown away. I loved his last album but this takes all the best elements about that album to the next level. The production and arrangements take a modern classical tone but with his glossy finish that blesses all of his work. It is borderline psychedelic and sees Mike tackle different influences from everywhere you can think of in a cohesive and phenomenally constructed album. I love the reggae inspired title track and generally I will likely expand this review later.

(bubbling) Drake - Honestly, Nevermind (66/100)

While I don't think Drake has any great albums, he also doesn't really have any bad album in my opinion. He has quite a few mid and forgettable albums but he also has a handful of enjoyable projects even if they are a little shallow. This is one of his more enjoyable projects that happens to be a little shallow.

My Current List

1. Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez, See Your Future
2. Perfume Genius - Ugly Season
3. The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention
4. 070 Shake - You Can't Kill Me
5. Duster - Together
6. Jack White - Fear of The Dawn
7. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up Here
8. FKA Twigs - Caprisongs
9. Warpaint - Radiate Like This
10. Animal Collective - Time Skiffs
11. Boris - W
12. Fontaines DC - Skinty Fia
13. Christain Lee Hutson - Quitters
14. Mike Dean - Smoke State 42222
15. Placebo - Never Let Me Go
16. Lime Cordiale - Cordi Elba

(bubbling under)

- Fivio Foreign - BIBLE
- Earl Sweatshirt - Sick!
- Zeal & Ardor - Self-Titled
- Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
- Rammstein - Zeit
- Soul Glo - Diaspora Problems
- Post Malone - Twelve Carat Toothache

This album really knocked me over. Quite different from anything he has done before, with a lot of avant-garde influences. I get Loud City Song vibes from some of the tracks.

I am very pleasantly surprised by Ugly Season. Have only listened to it once yet, but it's great! Easily his best work to date.

Joe Rainey - Niineta : "avant garde pow wow", it mixes native american chants with field recordings, percussions and electronic music ; it's pretty arresting and moving, an early contender for my "moderately acclaimed" pick.
Thanks for the recommendations. I gave all three a listen but this is the one I'm returning to. It sounds great!

My favorite album of 2022 is The Weekend - Dawn FM. His fifth album is even more awesome than the previous one. For me, it's the best album of 2022 because it brings philosophical thoughts about life and just helps you relax and have a great time.
But it wouldn't be true if I said it was the only album that made me fall in love with music. The second on my list is FKA Twigs - "Caprisongs." Apart from Weekend, I like George Smith and some of the British rappers. Their music sounds fresh and far from mainstream, and some of their video clips for the singles are truly works of art.

The songs on the new Lizzo album are perfectly divided between “this is an amazing disco pastiche” (About Damn Time, Everybody’s Gay) and “this is literally the most annoying thing I have ever heard” (Grrrls, I Love You Bitch). The disparity in quality is amazing.

Some updates to my list!

- Perfume Genius has in fact passed Denzel Curry and Ugly Season is my favorite album this year so far.
- The highest new addition is Beabadoobee's Beatopia entering at #10
- Lil Uzi Vert's Red & White EP enters at #13. My favorite release of theirs since 2017, maybe coming out opened up a creative door?
- While I didn't find Jack White's second LP this year, Entering Heaven Alive, nearly as engaging as Fear of The Dawn, it has a handful of great 70s-esque acoustic ballads and folky moments that I like quite a bit. It enters at #18
- Both Post Malone and Drake have fallen off the bubbling under section. I genuinely think both artists, with their level of resources, can maker tighter pop rap albums.

My Current List

1. Perfume Genius - Ugly Season
2. Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez, See Your Future
3. The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention
4. 070 Shake - You Can't Kill Me
5. Duster - Together
6. Jack White - Fear of The Dawn
7. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up Here
8. FKA Twigs - Caprisongs
9. Warpaint - Radiate Like This
10. Beabadoobee - Beatopia

13. Lil Uzi Vert - Red & White
14. Fontaines DC - Skinty Fia
15. Christain Lee Hutson - Quitters
16. Mike Dean - Smoke State 42222
17. Placebo - Never Let Me Go
18. Jack White - Entering Heaven Alive
19. Lime Cordiale - Cordi Elba

(bubbling under)

- Fivio Foreign - BIBLE
- Earl Sweatshirt - Sick!
- Zeal & Ardor - Self-Titled
- Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

Listened to it last night, thought it was great. I don’t think there are a lot of Beyoncé fans on this forum so that’s probably why it’s a little quiet on here.

Personally, the Beyonce didn't do it for me as much as it did for other people. I enjoyed it but not enough to make my list. However I did revisit Mr Morale and got around to listening to the Conway The Machine album and enjoyed Kendrick more and loved the Conway album.

1. Perfume Genius - Ugly Season
2. Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez, See Your Future
3. The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention
4. 070 Shake - You Can't Kill Me
5. Duster - Together
6. Jack White - Fear of The Dawn
7. Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up Here
8. FKA Twigs - Caprisongs
9. Conway The Machine - Got Don't Make Mistakes
10. Warpaint - Radiate Like This
11. Beabadoobee - Beatopia
12. Animal Collective - Time Skiffs
13. Boris - W
14. Lil Uzi Vert - Red & White
15. Fontaines DC - Skinty Fia
16. Christain Lee Hutson - Quitters
17. Mike Dean - Smoke State 42222
18. Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
19. Placebo - Never Let Me Go
20. Jack White - Entering Heaven Alive
21. Lime Cordiale - Cordi Elba

I am surprisingly obsessed with the Beyoncé album. I think leaning in the her narcissism is actually somehow refreshing - maybe I'm just glad it wasn't the third album in a row about Jay-Z being a sleaze. It runs too long, but even the track I don't particularly like (which is coincidentally the most explicitly about J - Plastic On The Sofa) does work when listening through.

The new, new, Jack White album is good, can't help but feel both releases this year could have been made into something of a tighter single project.

Calvin Harris... Rough.

Nice to see some love for 070 Shake’s new album. Not sure why/how it has essentially flown totally under the radar. To my ears, it’s an all-timer. (I’ve listened to it roughly 2-3 times a week for about 2 months now. It just really works for me idk.)

I have so much catching up to do but so far:
1. 070 Shake-You Can’t Kill Me
2. Black Country New Road-Ants from Up There
3. Rosalía-MOTOMAMI
4. Kendrick Lamar-Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers
5. The Smile-A Light for Attracting Attention
6. Father John Misty-Chloe & the Next 20th Century
7. Beach House-Once Twice Melody
8. Pusha T-It’s Almost Dry
9. Ibibio Sound Machine-Electricity
10. Bartees Strange-From Farm to Table

I enjoyed the new Danger Mouse/Black Thought album. It wasn't breaking any new ground, but it's consistently fun and has a killer list of features. The one with Run the Jewels on it is a highlight for me.

The National just released a new song with Bon Iver, "Weird Goodbyes" with an album supposed to be coming later. I don't think a release date has been announced yet, hopefully it will be this year though. The song is solid as well.

Finally got around listening to it today (already heard and liked the Run the Jewels track). Great album. Danger Mouse is really killing it on this album and Black Thought shows he still has it. Probably my favourite hip hop album of the year so far.

I thought the Beths' new album was solid. If you aren't already a fan, this one won't change your mind, but it's another solid power pop album. I've been revisiting Future Me Hates Me quite a bit recently.

Bonnie, this is a total guess on my part, but do you happen to be a musician? I didn't listen to much of Wong's Cafe, but it struck me as, like, a Vulfpeck type thing where people who have made music themselves really admire their sophistication of technique.

Did you like his other album this year, Power Station? Should I listen to either of them?

Happy Thursday! I've had other things on my mind the last six months besides music, and I haven't been keeping up with new releases very much. But I miss doing these posts and discovering new music all the time, so here's a little update.

Secretly Society's record club sent me Angel Olsen's new album in the mail, and I am so glad they did. Big Time is a gorgeous, contemplative retro country album that has given me maybe my favorite song of the year, "This Is How It Works." "Right Now" and the title track are also catchy standouts. "Dream Thing" didn't make much of an impression on me at first, but it wormed its way into my brain somehow over the course of several weeks. Now I will catch myself humming it seemingly out of nowhere a few times a week.

Also, if you're into music-as-storytelling, or are just looking for something to put on while you and your friends drink Modelos and play darts, please check out Boat Songs by MJ Lenderman. favorite songs: "You Are Every Girl to Me," "You Have Bought Yourself a Boat," "Dan Marino," "Under Control," "Tastes Just Like it Costs"

Okay, here's my album diary. Bolded albums are ones that are new since I last posted. (I stopped paying attention to new releases for several months, so there's not a lot of new entries here.)

Yes, I play the classical guitar. It reminded me of Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, maybe musicians' music but with catchy tunes. I haven't heard his other album yet. That one has a lot of guests.
De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum.

Jirin wrote: Wed Mar 16, 2022 12:56 am Jenny Hval has a new album, really good.
Often, in my search for beautiful experiences and things, my ADHD symptoms and my disconnect from certain critical sensibilities frustrate me, but just before I convince myself that I am an anti-intellectual who hates art, I encounter a work that captivates me immediately, that speaks my language, that awakens an old, unfamiliar thirst in me.

The first few seconds of Jenny Hval's album from earlier this year, Classic Objects, kind of remind me of Disturbed's cover of "Shout" by Tears for Fears. I realize that this is not a flattering comparison. But it got my attention. It locked me in for forty minutes of what, though on paper reads like meandering poetry, is realized on record as eight elegant, thoughtful, and sticky pop songs. They have choruses! Really good choruses! And bongos!? If you give this one a spin, definitely listen with the lyrics in front of you. They really are captivating. favorite songs: "Classic Objects," "Cemetery of Splendour," all of them

This Week's Recommendation
"Possibly Björk's best album since Vespertine" -BleuPanda

If you like Utopia, and also bass clarinets and UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ, I bet you'll like Fossora. The songwriting bears resemblance to Utopia's, many repetitions of a repeated melodic phrase with spacey vocal harmonies, but with a lot more instrumentation in the lower end of the frequency spectrum, and with occasional spurts of batshit gabber. I didn't know what gabber was until I read The Guardian's excellent profile on Fossora and found this YouTube video that surveys the genre. You should totally check out that Guardian profile. Especially this part:
On heavy rotation at Björk’s living room parties were Gabber Modus Operandi, two Indonesian punks who alloy folk styles such as Balinese gamelan with abrasive western gabber, footwork and noise. “They’re taking tradition into the 21st century, which I really respect. They do it like nobody else,” Björk says.

She had a feeling they would be on the same wavelength. When Ican Harem and DJ Kasimyn first spoke to her over a video call, she explained she was making her “mushroom album. It’s like digging a hole in the ground. This time around, I’m living with moles and really grounding myself. I don’t know if that’s too far-fetched for you guys, but I have to speak in this sort of music lingo,’” she told them. “And they were like: ‘Oh, it’s funny you say that, but last week we took some gamelan drums and dug them in the ground and played them there and recorded it. So, yes, we know what you mean.’” She laughs. “Literally! I was just talking metaphorically!” The duo emailed her beats, which she painstakingly edited into Fossora’s fiddly time signatures, resulting in blasts of what the trio call “biological techno” (also the name of their WhatsApp group chat).
Anyway, the album is gorgeous and groovy and a lot of fun.

Listen on Tidal

Also, I listened to Fontaines D.C.'s album, finally. I wasn't really expecting to get it, and it's not the type of thing I often pursue. But I decided to give it a chance, and the first track, "In ár gCroíthe go deo," haunted me immediately. The song is written for a family who was forbidden to inscribe "In our hearts forever" in Irish Gaelic on their loved one's headstone without an accompanying English translation. The song is mournful and full of fury borne of the subjugation of Irish cultural identity. As for the rest of the album, I like the atmosphere these guys cultivate, and there are a lot of good tunes and good grooves. favorite tracks: "In ár gCroíthe go deo", "Roman Holiday", "Jackie Down The Line", "Skinty Fia"

I gave it a listen last night. I liked it a lot, but it's hard for me to tell how it stacks up against their other albums. I think the lows are higher and the highs are lower here. A lot of really good songs but no "Archie, Marry Me" or "In Undertow".

I really liked Blue Rev. I agree that maybe "the lows are higher and the highs are lower" in this album.
Still need to listen more times, but i feel it can become my favorite from them.
It's also one of the albums i've enjoyed more from this year

Happy Thursday!

This Week's Recommendations

I listened to a lot of albums I loved this week. Here are a few recommendations:
  • Caroline's self-titled debut from February this year was really good. I was aware of it and had a feeling I would like it, but didn't get around to it until now. Much of the album is instrumental, but when vocals do show up, they create a sense of space, echoing in the way that a living room or a small chapel does. On my personal favorite, "Good morning (red)", some of the vocals sound shouted down the hallway of a dimly lit basement, twenty feet away from the mic. It all gives me a distinctly churchy impression that I wasn't expecting. This is epic, pared-down, slow-burn instrumental music with a rough, DIY feel. It's off-kilter but in a precise way. Check it out!
    Spotify Tidal Apple Music
  • Joseph Shabason and Nicholas Krgovich's second collaborative effort, At Scaramouche, is so fucking cozy y'all. It's so warm and delightful and nostalgic. Nostalgic for what? Whatever it is, I'm too young for it. So many instruments on this thing are giving me déjà vu. I'm getting, uhh... the bass from Pikmin 2's Perplexing Pool... the electric piano from "It's Raining Somewhere Else"... the clarinet ensemble from Squidward's ethnocommune... those drums that sound like popping bubbles... If I had to guess, I would say it's gesturing towards late seventies adult contemporary soft rock, but hell if I know. "This is really giving me Boss Baby vibes," yeah, yeah. Look, it's a lovely album to spend time with. Put it on while eating dinner with friends. favorite tracks: "I'm Dancing," "I Am So Happy with My Little Dog," "In the Middle of the Day"
    Spotify Tidal Apple Music
  • Glitch Princess by Yeule is another album from February that I didn't get around to until now. Yeule is the alias for nonbinary Singaporean singer Nat Ćmiel. Their second album, Glitch Princess, is a hyper-futuristic dysphoric nightmare with equal parts transcendent beauty and terrific ugliness. It reminded me and other people of a more melancholic Visions by Grimes, but there's a lot more going on in Yeule's production than that comparison suggests. You should run your fingers over every sonic detail of this album. favorite tracks: "Don't Be So Hard on Your Own Beauty", "Electric", "Too Dead Inside", "Friendly Machine", "Bites on My Neck"
    Spotify Tidal Apple Music
In other news, Spotify has played Cate Le Bon's "Moderation" for me a few times, and I'm starting to become hypnotized by it. I may yet learn to like Pompeii.

Lucrecia Dalt's album coming out tomorrow sounds really cool. According to this NPR profile I read, ¡Ay! is a forward-thinking, experimental blend of bolero, son Cubano, merengue, and other Latin American genres she grew up with, with a weird sci-fi alien concept woven through. Isabelia Herrera at Pitchfork is already hyping it up with a Best New Music. Here's a snippet of that advance review that really makes me want to listen:
In the Western world, traditional or folkloric genres from Latin America, especially ones with African and/or Indigenous origins, are seen as static and creatively stale. These are presumed to be relics of the past, styles that few experimental musicians would touch. But on ¡Ay!, Dalt spurns that kind of colonial thinking. Instead of dismissing the genres of her youth, she transforms and stretches them, demonstrating how capacious they really are. The result is an invitation to broaden narrow interpretations of Latin American music and identity, embracing multiplicity and idiosyncrasy in the process.
Doesn't that just rock your tits? Give ¡Ay! a listen.

I forgot to mention that Too Rye Ay as It Should Have Sounded is coming out tomorrow. Apparently Kevin Rowland has been dissatisfied with this album's mixing for forty years, and now he's fixed it.

The new 1975 album isn't their best, but it is their most consistent. It won't win over any converts (probably), but if you're a fan of the band (like me), you should definitely check it out.

Oliver Sim has entered the chat. I would like to write a longer review, but this album is pure perfection to my ears and is already in my top 20 of all time.

What I do want to discuss/rant about today is an astonishing body of work, with a textbook case of awful track sequencing – Fossora by Björk. I can only assume she was under the influence of some funky fungal tea when assembling the record, because it is on a level I can't comprehend. I feel like there are three distinct sections of the album, and the presented order does little to encourage the listener into the world she has created (Atopos first Björk? That's insane!). The first section of my 'fixed' sequence:

Allow
Fungal City
Freefall
Ovule
Mycelia

Allow’ sets up the themes of the rest of the album: mushrooms, growth, maternal bonds and metaphors of weaving. It bookends the record with a 'long[ing] to float' which is achieved with the help of daughter ísadóra in the final track ‘Her Mother’s House’. This section is a four track arc in which the narrator opens her heart to love (Allow), finds it (Fungal City), falls in love (Freefall) and then consummates it (Ovule). Finally we hit the first of our three interludes which end each portion of the album, the delightful 'Mycelia'.

Sorrowful Soil
Ancestress
Fagurt er í fjörðum

The second section of the album needs little description and is as it appears.

Atopos
Victimhood
Fossora
Trölla-Gabba
-
Her Mother’s House

The final sequence is the most sonically damp ('mud-dense') but is thematically all about personal growth. 'To find resonance', '[stepping] out of victimhood' and 'dissolving old pain'. And while 'Mycelia' is lush and reflects the lightness of falling in love, 'Trölla 'is harsh and reflects the pain required of healing. Finally, in another ‘Pluto/All Is Full Of Love' post-script, we turn from harsh sounds to soft reprise in which we wrap up the major themes of the record.

Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

I don't care what the critics say: Mr. Morale is a Trainwreckord, and dents Kendrick's career for me.

Though I have been getting into Steve Lacy and Perfume Genius though. BCNR might be the king though.

I don't think it's terrible but easily his worse release (including Untitled Unmastered). I was already annoyed by DAMN, imo a step down compared to his previous 2, dominating the EOY so I'd be depressed if Mr. Morale did the same.

Mr Morale is a good album, just not up to his previous standards.
