Hi BleuPanda. Can you change the Resurrection Shuffle version on the playlist to the studio version (3:13) rather than the 6:37 live version that is on there. Many thanks.
Awesome game.
But I was caught, like a fleeting thought,
Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind

Sorry about that, but it should be fixed now (maybe it takes a bit to update on here but it is updated on my end...)

My opinion on the song and my feeling on how overlooked on the forum it is are both going to factor into my picks...I best vote before I miss it like last week!

Lil Green - Why Don't You Do Right
Fred Astaire - Puttin' on the Ritz
Straitjacket Fits - Down in Splendour
UB40 - Food for Thought
Marcus Wiesbusch - Der Tag wird kommen
Sun Kil Moon - Richard Ramirez Died Today of Natural Causes
Violent Femmes - Kiss off (the original Bodys would've had more of a chance in my world!)
Lush - Etheriel

Top song: Richard Ramirez
Top discovery: Der Tag wird kommen
Most undeserving loser: Suicidal Thoughts
All I got inside is vacancy!

4. Lil Green - Why Don't You Do Right
vs.
12. Elliott Smith - Son of Sam

15. Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke - The Resurrection Shuffle
vs.
10. Fred Astaire - Puttin' on the Ritz

14. Straitjacket Fits - Down in Splendour
vs.
13. The Notorious B.I.G. - Suicidal Thoughts

9. UB40 - Food for Thought
vs.
11. Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti

16. Manic Street Preachers - The Everlasting
vs.
7. Marcus Wiebusch - Der Tag wird kommen

5. Lou Reed - Sad Song
vs.
1. Sun Kil Moon - Richard Ramirez Died Today of Natural Causes

6. Car Seat Headrest - Bodys
vs.
2. Violent Femmes - Kiss Off

8. Ultravox - Hiroshima Mon Amour
vs.
3. Lush - Etheriel

Thoughts on this group....

1) Overall a nice group. I would rate my top songs of this group a bit higher than the last group.

2) The Marcus Wiebusch song was new to me and I liked it quite a bit. Kudos to the nominator!

3) Like Kayne in the last group, Manic Street Preachers are a forum favorite that just doesn't register with me.

4) Once again my nominee gets a really tough draw 😢

8. Lil Green - Why Don't You Do Right vs. 14. Elliott Smith - Son of Sam
I remain curiously immune to Elliott Smith, although this one is alright. I prefer the old-timer here, though.

5. Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke - The Resurrection Shuffle vs. 1. Fred Astaire - Puttin' on the Ritz
The Resurrection Shuffle is a good discovery by an act I never heard of before. It has a really cool sound. Still, my own nomination Puttin' on the Ritz put cool on the table, so I have to go with that one.

11. Straitjacket Fits - Down in Splendour vs. 7. The Notorious B.I.G. - Suicidal Thoughts
A nice calm ballad can't quite compete with a nervy, gripping tale by gangsterdom's greatest poet.

16. UB40 - Food for Thought vs. 10. Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti
The most famous song of this week is also completely unremarkable in my view. I just never understood the appeal of UB40. I do understand the appeal of Sufjan Stevens. This song isn't a particular favorite of mine, but it is good nonetheless.

9. Manic Street Preachers - The Everlasting vs. 13. Marcus Wiebusch - Der Tag wird kommen
James Dean Bradfield's vocals sometimes get close to grating, but here just not quite yet, allowing this song to really soar. Der Tag wird kommen is not without it's appeal, but it's martial, almost hip-hop like rhythm isn't quite as interesting for me.

3. Lou Reed - Sad Song vs. 2. Sun Kil Moon - Richard Ramirez Died Today of Natural Causes
A very tough choice. Two songs about grief, both in a weird way. The apotheosis of one of my all-time favorite albums vs a very unique take on the death song. With pain in my hear I vote for Sun Kil Moon.

4. Car Seat Headrest - Bodys vs. 12. Violent Femmes - Kiss Off
Man, Twin Fantasy is a great album isn't it? Got probably robbed a bit during the EOY thing, because it was a remake of a previously ignored album. Bodys is really an album highlight. Kiss Off is less a highlight of Violent Femmes. It's still fine, but outclassed here.

6. Ultravox - Hiroshima Mon Amour vs. 15. Lush - Etheriel
The Ultravox song surprised me. I only know the band through Vienna, but this is something different. Great art-pop. Lush keep being a little too lightweight even for dream pop for me.

Lil Green - Why Don't You Do Right < Elliott Smith - Son of Sam

Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke - The Resurrection Shuffle > Fred Astaire - Puttin' on the Ritz

Straitjacket Fits - Down in Splendour > The Notorious B.I.G. - Suicidal Thoughts

UB40 - Food for Thought > Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti

Manic Street Preachers - The Everlasting > Marcus Wiebusch - Der Tag wird kommen

Lou Reed - Sad Song > Sun Kil Moon - Richard Ramirez Died Today of Natural Causes

Car Seat Headrest - Bodys > Violent Femmes - Kiss Off

Ultravox - Hiroshima Mon Amour < Lush - Etheriel

Of those new to me, I enjoyed The Resurrection Shuffle and Etheriel. I feel bad for my pick going against Biggie, seems like a close matchup already.

Lil Green - Why Don't You Do Right : it's not often I vote against Elliott Smith but that song is a great discovery that feels and sounds ahead of it's time. Son of Sam is at best my 20th favorite Smith song (while still make it a 8/10 for sure)
Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke - The Resurrection Shuffle
Straitjacket Fits - Down in Splendour : great song that wouldn't feel out of place on The Bends. I like the lyrics and flow of Suicidal Thoughts but the beat and production didn't work for me
Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti : I don't dislike the UB40 song as much as others here but For the Widows... used to be in my top 1000 and isn't that far from it
Marcus Wiebusch - Der Tag wird kommen : I don't get Manic Street Preachers, I find most of their songs hard to get through.
Sun Kil Moon - Richard Ramirez Died Today of Natural Causes : I recently said I didn't enjoy Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon but that's one of the few exceptions
Car Seat Headrest - Bodys : the 2 songs from my top 1000 of all time end up facing each other unfortunately, but it's still no competition. Bodys is my favorite rock song of the decade, an exhalted celebration of love, life and dancing, a perfect song top to bottom.

Nassim, I couldn't agree with you more. Bodys is an absolutely amazing song, by far my favorite of this group, and a song I would be happy to see win the whole tournament. I thought it would be a dark horse that could make a deep run and had simply been overlooked for the reasons Rob explained. Disappointing that it's going to lose in the first round.
