Predictions: 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die 2021 update

Post by faaofaoo »

On October 7th, an updated edition of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die will be (finally) released.
I just want to know whether anyone has any predictions about which albums are going to make their way into the list and which ones are going to be shown the door.
Since the last two decades (2000s and 2010s) are the ones where most of the changes usually happen, my personal bet would be:

OUT
Q-Tip | The Renaissance | 2008
John Grant | Queen of Denmark | 2010
White Denim | D | 2011
Hot Chip | In Our Heads | 2012
Churches | The Bones of What You Believe | 2013
Jane Weaver | Modern Kosmology | 2017
Hookworms | Microshift | 2018

IN
Kacey Musgraves | Golden Hour | 2018
Lana Del Rey| Norman Fucking Rockwell! | 2019
Fontaines D.C. | Dogrel | 2019
Run the Jewels | RTJ 4 | 2020
Perfume Genius | Set My Heart On Fire Immediately | 2020
Fiona Apple | Fetch The Bolt Cutters | 2020
Squid | Bright Green Field | 2021

I didn't put Bob Dylan's 2020 release because plenty of his albums are on the list already, so I think they'll probably want to go with an album from a different artist.
Don't forget that since this update is released in 2021, there WILL be a 2021 album featured in the list. The question is which one will make the cut?

I don't know the current list enough to add predictions, but I think your predictions are sound, except maybe the exclusion of "The Bones of What You Believe"

Hi all. The latest additions to the book are as follows:

Christine and the Queens - Chris (2018)

Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour (2018)

Little Sims - GREY Area (2019)

Michael Kiwanuka - Kiwanuka (2019)

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Ghosteen (2019)

Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters (2020)

Sault - Untitled (Black Is) (2020)

Taylor Swift - Evermore (2020)

Lana del Rey - Chemtrails over the Country Club (2021)

Jazmine Sullivan - Heaux Tales (2021)

A few surprises for sure, but understandable. I'm yet to fully know the 10 albums that have been compromised from this years edition. The only noticeable exclusions to my knowledge are:

Thundercat - Drunk (2017)

Kelela - Take Me Apart (2017)

SZA - Ctrl (2017)

Thank you Jude for this valuable information, I was scouring the Internet this past week for exactly this. Can I ask you which regional edition do you have? it seems like the list's content changes with each different region, though I'm not so sure.

Hi Faaofaoo. I'm glad to have been a help to you. So this edition is from the UK region, initially I didn't know that there were different editions for different regions until a few days ago when I stumbled across an edition online (either 2018, or 2021) that had Prince on the front cover. I assumed that was for the US region. But mine of course has Nirvana's Nevermind as the cover. I would be interested in finding out if there are any alterations to the list for different countries. So if you have any details on that, then please feel free to contact me.

I'm also currently working on a spotify playlist that consists of the most played song from each of the 1001 albums (including the 87 omitted albums from previous editions). It will be completed in due course, but something definitely worth checking out for an up-to-date playlist. Furthermore, if you want to check out the website that I use to check some of the inclusions (as of 2018) I'm going to leave a link to the page if you are not already aware of it.

I'm surprised Ultraviolence never made the cut ages ago, and NFR is top 10 BEST albums of the 10's.

Didn't really dig Chemtrails to be honest
