Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2021 (update September 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 33 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Dansende Beren (New this year thanks to Chilton's proposal); Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash; DIY; God Is In The Tv; Load And Quiet; Music OMH; NME; The Guardian; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; Beats Per Minute; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture; Under The Radar

Highlights: Rob makes the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, etc…

I know it isn't shocking considering the reception but I am disappointed that Donda was as critically panned as it was. It may have a lot of filler but more that 3/4th is some of Kanye's best recent material

The album is kind of an overstuffed mess, but you're right - there's a lot of really good stuff there as well. Unfortunately, Kanye's public image has taken so many (deserved) hits in recent years that for many reviewers it seems to be almost impossible to separate art from artist. And that zero-star review from The Independent is just disgraceful - yes, featuring Marilyn Manson on a track (whose refrain is "Guess who's going to jail tonight," no less) was a terrible, "oh-dear-aren't-we-shocking?" idea, but shitcanning the entire album because of what amounts to a bonus track is also terrible.

Yeah I honestly just ignored those 4 bonus tracks. I also like Kanye when he is at his most strange like to me Yeezus and The Life of Pablo are near perfect projects. I agree the album is overstuffed but I think most of the criticism is against him as a person not the actual album. I honestly find that ye isn't a bad guy in the slightest he just doesn't always have the best judgement and when he has his moments of mental breakdowns, he goes down twisted rabbit holes. Honestly I still give Donda an 8/10 based on how much I do like from the project.

Forget about Rolling Stone, the only song list that matters is this one:

Rather eclectic group of new entries. And of course The Staves, this year's obligatory in-and-out album.

It's a mild surprise that Little Simz didn't shoot straight up to #1, right?

A lot of the British bands once categorized as post punk have caught on to the trend and now insist on being labeled “art rock or art pop.” Doesn’t really matter cause I’m noticing the critics now now gearing towards British soul, r&b, funk and hip hop. The British urban scene in other words I guess.

And jazz too, with Sons of Kemet + their offshoots being the most prominent example.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Simz hits 30+ reviews, so I think it has a decent chance of beating Promises, as long as reviews stay around 80/90
